Spoilers Season 2 Publicity Photos

TO be honest: Because it was the one thing I most noticed about this shot - especially during the trailer in motion - and this picture was very prominent in the beginning of this thread.

There are other things I noticed about this particular shot as well:
  • Her hair. That's pretty good, it very much channels Majel Barrett, without feeling like 60s hair
  • Her voice. Also a pretty good fit for the character
  • The uniform: I like the colored version much more than the blue Disco-uniforms, but the black collar is not good
  • Somebody mentioned that she's wearing pants (like Majel Barret), and not a dress. I like that too (though to be fair, most women on Disco wearing pants - the dress seems to be the exception, like the one redshirt from the first trailer)
But to be frank - all that had already been covered pretty good in this thread, and I agree with it mostly. The "appereance" of her face - was the one thing that I negatively noticed. Because I knew Rebecca Romjin, but haven't seen anything from her in a while, and simply expected her to look like a middle-aged woman, and was shocked to see her this way instead. To be honest - it may be that it's only this single shot that makes it look this way. Who knows. But it was the one thing I noticed most about this particular shot.

Here’s another image of her. The way she’s carrying around that tablet reminds me of TOS.

I think that’s a new device, it looks bigger then the PADDs we’ve seen on DSC already. Could be wrong.

Judging only from the publicity shots, I think Number One is perfect. Just in the stills, Romjin reminds me of the original -- and that's pretty incredible.

As for a name, I seriously hope the writers pay a little homage to all the novelists who have explored the character over the years. She has been beautifully fleshed out and explored and I can't see any reason not to include some of that creativity in this latest appearance (except for the fact that I'm 99.9% positive the DSC writers haven't done any diligence at all beyond watching The Cage -- if they even bothered doing that much).

That's really close to TOS, actually!
Frankly, they did a really good job with casting. The cast was already the strongest part of season 1 IMO. Anson Mount and Romjin look very much like Hunter and Barret, more so even than for example Bruce Greenwood did.

That's why I think their Spock might be good as well, even though he looks IMO pretty "bland" (It's still amazing how much Quinto has the same elongated facial structure as Nimoy!:guffaw:), and almost nothing like Nimoy, especially not Nimoy in "The Cage". But his timbre in his voice was pretty convincing, and maybe he can simply act the part?!

I wonder if even Nimoy could recapture that Cage look. It's a truly interesting experiment in how much the Spock character evolved as Nimoy put more thought in to him. The Cage Spock was still a character in search of an identity.

Haha, MASSIVE eyebrows would be the answer.:guffaw:

But honestly, Ethan Peck-Spock seems to be cast as a younger, softer version of the Spock we are all familiar with. Probably even closer Spock-action figures, comicbooks and Quinto, than actual Nimoy. Especially not in his "the cage"-look!

But I'm completely fine with that. I don't want look-a-like-contestant winners, I want good actors, that can channel the character, while still making it their own.

Eyebrows aside (let's not scare people away with eyebrows ;) ) I think that it could be interesting to see Spock moving, and perhaps even be a bit inconsistent, as she forms his identity within Starfleet, until becoming the more stoic officer we know and love.

I don't know. One of the themes of the season 2 marketing seems to be "no risks anymore" when it comes to depicting already familiar Trek elements. Hairy klingon and the D7 were super accurate, and even the Enterprise and her crew waaay closer to TOS than any thing on DIS before.

I guess they are smart enough to have a small character arc planned out for Spock.
But overall, the casting of Peck suggest a younger, maybe a bit more naive version of "familiar" Spock. I certainly think they won't make him as emotional as in the Kelvin movies, I guess they try to channel the "going through emotions while pretending to be very cold and reasonable about it"-schtick of TOS. And for good reason: It works.

So it's probably more going to be about sibling-trouble with Burnham (does he accept her as a sister? is he envious that she's closer to Sarek?), than him going through rage-fits after loosing his Captain or homeworld or something.

Funny considering Peck is only a few years younger then what Nimoy was in the 60s.

Modern Makeup I guess

Watch people complain about how safe DISCO is playing it now

As for Spock, there is a reason he is emotional in the Kelvin films and that doesn't translate over to current story. So, it would make sense for a younger Spock to struggle to put forward the logical front, while internally his emotions are raging. Which, guess what? That's how Nimoy played him.

I will be curious to see how he treats Burnham.

As a 59 going on ancient man, how can you with absolute certainty say at 45 she's had work done rather than maybe just using standard cosmetic products? Could be genetically her facial features are that way. Would never have occurred to me, but then, ignorance is bliss...

My first thought was...
Wow, she's a pretty good match for Majel some 50 years later.
Not...
Wow, look at how much plastic surgery the actress has had.

Actually, that particular thought, didn't even enter into my mind till it was brought up outta left-field.
and even then, my first thought was...
WOW, what a crappy thing to post.
:wtf:

More a case of "baby-face vs. premature old-face" I guess.:guffaw:

Also, Nimoy was a chain-smoker. That shit makes you look really old really fast. Bless his soul.
The same way Tobey Maguire still looks like a weird teenager, wheras Tommy Lee Jones already looked like your daddy when he was in highschool.

Naw man, that's not complaining. I think "playing it safe" is the exact right way if you deal with super familiar characters and species in an established franchise that people know for more than 50 years. I want my klingons to be recognizable as klingons even in 50 years from now, dammit!

Wheras "going bat-shit bonkers" is IMO the right approach for tackling new stuff.

Meaning, if they would depict, say, a Federation-Klingon war storyline, I'd like that to be handled in a "safe" way, being true to canon and all that jazz. Wheras if they would had, say, a magic superdrive that can go anywhere in the universe, I'd like to see some super crazy wild out-there stuff. Instead, season 1 kinda' approached those two premises backwards - nothing about the klingons looked familiar, whereas the spore drive was surprisingly mundane.

If the trailer for season 2 is any indication, they got it right this time though: Klingons et al. are depiced "safe" and recognizable again (even the D7 appears!). And - hopefully - also the Spock storyline fits with what we know about the "prime" character. Wheras the "red angel"-storyline looks a bit more fantastic and out-there. That's IMO how it should be.

I know nothing of the actor playing Number One, but in that shot of her descending the transporter pad, she looks rather like my mother did between 1962 (when I was born) and 1966 (when she died).

Funny, I was just having a conversion where I used Romijn as an example of an actress who hasn't had any work done. Of course I'm no good at spotting these things if they are done competently.
