Having to write a whole new script at this point and still get a movie made by 2020 would be equally desperate.
I wonder if they only have the one script? WB have competing scripts made for their franchise movies.

How long was it until we learned of that alternate Generations script where Kirk was a hologram?

Berman was saying in press interviews as early as Summer '93 that he had two TNG movie scripts in development. One script he said had "some" of the TOS cast (one of them really), the other one had "all" of them (Generations at an earlier state of development).

There was rumor a couple years back that Simon Pegg was involved in drafting another ST script, however that was dispelled around the time that Paramount started saying they had two movies in development (the Tarantino project being the other one).

Ok then. What would you like?
You were the one who said throwing millions at Chris Hemsworth "smacked" of desperation.

Yes, and now I'm asking you what you would like to see. It's a fair question.

1. Hire back Pine without Hemsworth
This is clearly the best choice. Ideally they should just throw away the script with Kirk's dad and write something new. I was never a fan of this idea as Kirk's dad died and I don't want another time travel story and I suspect we would get one. We had enough movies with that theme already and the last one wasn't so long ago.

2. fastrack Tarantino Trek

This is the second best option. I like the current cast and another movie with them would be nice. But Tarantino has no time in the near future, so I don't see how you can fast track that movie.

3. A complete reboot

This is the third best option. Just recast everyone and reboot Star Trek in the cinemas.

I really don't like any of the other options.

The only project of preference for me is the Tarantino movie, whenever he's ready to commit. And assuming Paramount isn't busy doing something else half-assed by then.

Anything I would've wanted on the Kelvin Trek front is evaporating until Paramount sucks it up and commits to something.

If you can't afford Hemsworth, do something like Time After Time. Where the Enterprise crew is hunting a criminal or criminals through Earth's history. Then you can use lots of current locations and outfits.

Replace Pine and hire Jesse Plemons as Kirk (from Black Mirror episode USS Callister). Recast Kirk's father (Matt Damon?) and you might as well recast Chekov.

I only care about Tarantino's take on Trek. I'm happy to wait for that and in the meantime to criticize what pops up on the small screen.

If nothing else, they should be able to sign Pine and re-cast George Kirk. Seriously, he was in ten minutes of the first film. This shouldn't even be a question of what to do.
They don't need to recast Geroge at all. The world Star Trek doesn't need another fucking "Yay Patriarchy!" story.

Move on.

I have no issue with doing that. Though, if they have a story they just have to tell, recast George Kirk. Heck, Pine and Hemsworth never even had a scene together.

Sorry..erm...having a characters father makes a film ‘yay patriarchy!’ Now?
Did I miss an important memo?
If we bring back Winona is that a ‘yay matriarchy!’ Film?
What dimension is this?

They need to abandon the "Kirk's dad" concept and just play with the hand that they have been dealt. Sadly, I think the only reason this fourth movie is still on life support is because the idea of Hemsworth being in it is an irresistible carrot to dangle. I voted for option 1, but if you asked me what I *expect* will happen, it'll be that the movie gets abandoned and they just go with the other one (probably rebooting again in the process)
