Ghost Stories for Kids

Any one got any good ghost stories for kids? Or book recommendations?

My oldest is obsessed with slender man and other weird stuff. I don’t like these characters. Something about the malevolence and pure evil nature that young kids shouldn’t be exposed to, so when asked if I liked slender man when I was little, it was time to recall good old solid stories of the good old days. But i couldn’t remember much.

When i was eight I had a book of ghosts, and my friends would sit together in a coal shed, on upturned milk crates, and by the light of a couple of candles, we’d try to scare each other.

I remembered the screaming skulls, that one resonated (no pun intended), and the one eyed black shuck that roamed the Irish moors to seek vengeance, and the bloodstain that always came back, and the clock that struck thirteen when someone was about to die.

These stories fire their imagination I think, stories that maybe could be real, but won’t give you nightmares, because they aren’t about you, or some evil guy waiting in the shadows to get you.

They’ve asked for more, and I’d like to better prepared next time. Any suggestions?

I always enjoyed the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark anthology growing up, but the catch is that I'm not sure if you could easily find copies with the original artwork intact. The books are still in print, but to my knowledge haven't used the old art in several years. I can somewhat understand that, as it's genuinely creepy stuff, but it's also part of what makes the original editions awesome in my own experience. You can google it to see the different versions.

I don't really care for the new art that I've seen, because it's simply too tame by comparison to the original. YMMV of course. ;)

I did a an image search for it. Those are creepy. I’ll give this one a go.

Thanks. Short stories are best to keep their attention.

I think I’ve found a modern edition of one of my long lost books too. No inside view, so won’t know till it gets here.

The Hardy Boys and also Nancy Drew have several volumes of ghost stories....I believe 6 short stories per volume.

Cool. I hope it works for them and doesn't cause too many potential nightmares. :D Most of the stories themselves are fairly well known legends and reasonably short in the books, but in my experience the art really changes the tone by upping the creepy vibe significantly. I suppose in some ways I was a weird kid, since the '80s had all sorts of horror stuff going on. :rommie:
