star trek beyond 2nd anniversary

I was just saying that personally, I would have preferred a reboot of the Garth story rather than what we got with the plot of Beyond. And any reboot of the Garth story could have had the Enterprise and crew figure into the story more prominently because a reboot is essentially wide-open as far as what can be done with a story.

 

I mean, I'm sure there are always tons of people who would rather have had this or that or whatever. That's perfectly normal, of course. But it sounded like you were basically saying 'if they wanted this type of story, they should have just done Garth' and I don't see how Garth is at all comparable to Krall/Beyond.

I also personally don't believe a Garth story would be much to write home about at all, but obviously we'll agree to disagree there.

 

That's a truly awesome story...congrats!

Beyond was made with a lot of thought and love, and I'll always appreciate this film.

There are so many little delicious little things in the story, from the (finally correctly portrayed) universal translator to the TOS crew picture at the end to the subtle homages (some toward other sci-fi franchises) throughout the film.

Everyone wanted something different, and we got it. The Swarm was a brilliant and beautifully portrayed concept that provided relief from Big Bad Ship syndrome. The crew gets split up and everyone has a much needed role. A likable and interesting new character is introduced. The Yorktown is heartwarming and visually stunning in every way. The brief trip through the Asteroid Badlands made space feel cool again. Spock and Bones are officially best bros. Kirk really matures and finds himself. The cast really feels comfortable and in command of these characters now. And then Our Heroes save the day and get a new ship at the end.

Beyond is the closest thing to a TOS episode on the big screen that we've ever had. And the whole story takes place Out There.

Just loved it.

My one real complaint is the lack of a title card shot after the opening sequence and before the awesome new warp speed visual effects. Ah, well.

Beyond is great Trek.

 

It all depends on how something is handled and whether they can craftily juxtapose an original character and situations with a reboot and make the latter new and additionally interesting. I think they could have had a Beyond-like plot with Garth and made it quite interesting. But, they didn't go that route so it's pretty much moot. Just ruminations and speculation after the fact, I know.

Maybe something for a fanfic at some point....

Beyond was my favorite Kelvin-verse film, but given that 2009 was boring and Into Darkness was basically plagiarism of TWOK, that isn't saying much.

One thing this film does have going for it is that the characters seem more comfortable and the actors seem more comfortable in the roles. Pine and Quinto and later Quinto and Urban have some great scenes that show these characters have grown up and matured.

However, the story was pedestrian at best. Burying Idris Elba under makeup and making him sound like a caveman did not serve the story. He is a great actor and deserved better (just as Cumberbatch did in Into Darkness). Leaving him as Edison and putting some strong scenes with Pine or others debating the merits of globalization would have saved this movie.

I am in the minority for not liking Jaylah, but the whole broken English warrior stuff got tired fast. Once again, you have Cho, Yelchin and Saldana pretty much relegated to the sidelines for some one off sidekick. How about having them finding the ship, Scotty learning to fix and Sulu learning to fly something from 100 years past to save the day.

I am looking for the next movie, only to see if they can continue this upward trend.

 

I rewatched this movie recently. Enjoyed it every bit as much as I did the first time. It's like a proper TOS episode except bigger. Star Trek at its best. I agree it's the best one since First Contact. Very rewatchable also. Will do so in a few months.

 

Elba under make-up was more than just for the twist though. It was part of his character...him becoming what he hates, but also reflecting some of his views of the federation...identity lost beneath the alien...all doses with a little irony. He is only strong enough to do what he is doing because of all the alien now in him, only able to survive, and underneath it all...he’s still human.

 

i actually think elba is stronger in the film in the scenes where he is buried under makeup. while i think he's great overall in the part, i was a little baffled by the semi-edison krall at the end of the film with the spitting and struggling to speak. it's delightfully weird but kind of inconsistent with how the character was behaving prior to that final morph.

but that's definitely a lingering what-if? what if the twist had come earlier and we got more scenes with edison and kirk, instead of saving the reveal for the end and not leaving enough time to explore his motivation.

It really is. I particularly like that it's a non-Earth centric Trek movie: something which is actually bizarrely rare in Star Trek movies.

 

Yes, BEY was a big TV episode, like INS and TFF.

And I don't want an overblown TV episode when I go to the cinema. I want an actual cinematic motion picture.

that's how Beyond felt to me too. watching it I was like..'urgh we getting a big tv ep aren't we...' (like Insurrection - which Beyond resembled even in the trailers). the 2 JJs movies felt like real events both in terms of cinema and in the Star Trek universe so when the early rumours for ST3 started involving like a Days of Future Past/Yesterdays Enterprise style battle for the timeline and return of ShatKirk it sounded eventful (even the general media started to report on it 'Shatners going to be in the next movie' etc) and made sense as to go that route thematically as Shatners return had been teased alittle in ST09 via the lost hologram scene and various lines 'a trick I learned from an old friend..'.... 'James T Kirk was a great man but that was another life..' and what better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary (in a similar way to Dr Who) than the return of the main star (and rectifying his silly death at last). also the timeline had been a theme throughout the 2 movies (STID with the consequences of the changed timeline and events of the Prime timeline seeping in/Spock Primes cameo) so this would perhaps offer some resolve/conclusion to the 'timeline trilogy' in a major event Dark Knight Rises way (as these Trek films were supposedly mirroring TDK trilogy so the 3rd would tie back to the 1st after the iconic villain in the 2nd). also since STID there'd been XMen: DOFP which was a massive hit so it made sense Trek would follow that and do a converging timelines adventure featuring original actor(s), plus SW:TFA whose main selling point was the return of the main star after a long time. but no..we had to get Insurrection II instead whose only real big event thing was the Enterprise (that no one was that bothered about anyway) getting destroyed.. again... (sorry Beyond fans, but )

 

To be clear, it had all the stuff that makes it feel like an episode of TOS but it was still clearly a blockbuster big budget movie. Insurrection felt like a two part episode Voyager could've done on their budget. There was nothing particularly cinematic about it.

 

I'm finding it difficult to disagree with any of this if I'm honest. I'm still a big fan of the movie though.

 

I liked Beyond more than Into Darkness and maybe even Star Trek 09. It was a fun movie that introduced my favorite character in the Kelvin films, Jaylah. I just wish I knew when the next trek film was coming out.

 

It had more heart than the first two for me*.

Some days I watch it and convince myself it's the best of the three, then I find myself considering the merits of the others and I find it difficult to separate them. There's some of my favourite moments in the franchise present in all three movies.

*2009's opening notwithstanding though.

 

2020 most likely.

 

I'll take that. I want to see more with this cast now they've matured into more or less their TOS counterparts.

 

By 2020, they'll almost be at the TMP stage, age-wise.
