He hated the Federation to begin with. His crew being stranded and 'forgotten' was just the last straw, the ultimate proof, in his eyes, that this new Starfleet had abandoned everything he believed in and become a shadow of its former self which would 'inevitably' lead humanity to ruin.

    "I fought for humanity!
We lost millions in the Xindi and Romulan wars.
    And for what?
For the Federation to sit me in the captain's chair
And break bread with the enemy?"

As for getting off the planet, he obviously did. But figuring out alien technology takes time, and then figuring out where the hell they are takes even more time. Their hatred and their 'mission' would've been firmly entrenched long before they finally rediscovered the Federation (which quite possibly didn't even happen until they found those Federation probes).

I actually really liked this. Having him be generically evil without a trace of self doubt is the lazy, uncompelling way out. Having him do a complete 180 at the last second is a trite, unconvincing cliche. But what we actually saw, a man on a mission which began as essentially hypothetical yet suddenly becomes real, a man who doubts himself yet in the end is compelled to finish what he started, is, imo, complex and interesting.

And I think it fits beautifuliy with the themes of the movie. Edison is human, like us. He is flawed, like us. Naturally, we want to elevate him, enlighten him, save him from his own destructive nature. But not all aspects of human society can be saved. The Federation can only exist if certain human destructive tendencies are refused and systematically denied (I won't say destroyed because there is every possibility for them to resurface and no guarantee that the Federation will last forever). Edison is the living embodiment of Humanity's dark past which could not be redeemed, only overcome. For my part, he's the richest and most interesting villain in any post TOS crew film.

i thought krall should’ve had a change of heart after i first saw the movie, but i think that was more just a desire to see something different than the requisite bad guy death scene. however, in my recent rewatch, i really appreciated the way they resolved his character. krall basically accidentally died in his own trap because he just couldn’t let it go. kirk did everything he could not to kill the guy.

You know how far Voyager travelled? It's that and back again umpteen times better than the two that came before it. Infact I would say it's the best since FC.

I liked the movie I thought it had good character moments, and overall it was fun.

I thought it was great they harked back to Enterprise, that showed reverence to canon.

The beastie boys stuff is cringe to me, that's my only real complaint.

Yes I could have done without that bit. It's mildly amusing at best.

For what it's worth, both times I saw the movie, the audience seemed to love it.

i genuinely appreciated that they took the stupidest, most obnoxious thing about the first film and capitalized on it.

Agreed. And if no one is listening to them now, why would anybody be listening to them centuries from now? It's like Picard sitting in his quarters listening to K.C. and the Sunshine Band.

It's okay, but it could have been better.

If they wanted to do a story like that, they should have rebooted what happened to Captain Garth.

I more appreciated the traditionally off-kilter moment behind their using late-80s rap as, far more often than not, using old music in a futuristic setting fails to feel authentic. Yet it worked in this movie. And I never really enjoyed the Beastie Boys' genre, then or now. Yes, the creators of the movie liked the group... still works in context as well as being a love letter. :)

That, and "star trek beyond 2nd anniversary" makes me feel really old now. I suppose it's better than "star trek v 29th and almost a quarter's anniversary", I'd guess.

I enjoy everything about Beyond that doesn't directly involve Krall/Edison – unfortunately, he becomes an ever-more important part of events as the story progresses which makes things less fun over time. And since his character doesn't work, like at all, it kind of tanks the movie.

That said, the day I saw Beyond was the day after a female friend had confessed to having romantic interest in me; that undoubtedly affected my reception of the film, but more importantly after I posted a rather angry review here, I sat there asking myself if I really still wanted to be an unattached angry Trekkie ranting about movies on the internet. So I went over to her place and we talked about it and suffice to say that Star Trek Beyond's release date is now also our second anniversary and we're engaged to be married next year.

So there's some affection on my part for the movie.

Except Garth's story is nothing like Beyond, doesn't involve the Enterprise and would require a huge fanwanky introduction to explain how he went from being horribly injured to becoming an insane shapeshifter.

Reboot all of it? So what's the point in even using it then?
