Should 1701-PHASE II REFIT design have been used in TMP/WOK/SFS?

Should the Enterprise 1701-PHASE II Refit design have been used in TMP/WOK/SFS , since it actually looked like a refit TOS 1701 and not a totally new ship? So, when the Enterprise 1701-PHASE II Refit was destroyed in SFS, then in TVH the Enterprise 1701-A would have been a totally new starship design as if it had appeared first in TVH and not TMP.

My favorite Enterprise is the 1701-Refit from Star Trek:The Motion Picture. I am just wondering opinions on if the Phase II Refit should have been used in TMP, WOK and destroyed in SFS instead?

I think the Phase II ship would have looked just as perfect as the Refit, if the filming model had been made with as much attention to detail. It surely would have resonated strongly with the fans because of the more familiar primary hull shape.
Imagine the Phase II with self-lighting and azteking in the iconic drydock scene! Goosebumps, I tells ya!

I'm ambivalent. The refit is my favourite ship so I guess I'd be reluctant to say yes. That said, Phase II done with as much detail , I would probably have loved the Phase II just as much.

Nobody was off-put by the refit in December of 1979. The ship was a highlight of the movie. Could it have been better? Sure. But there were some many things way more off about TMP than the ship redesign.

It's a very attractive design. That's the beauty of the TOS model -- you can do any number of alternate versions and they usually look pretty darn good.

Someone on youtube posted a CGI celebration of the refit Enterprise from TMP and titled it (aptly enough): "Beauty at Any Angle" and you know what? I'm in complete agreement:

Actually the Phase II Enterprise design was used in TMP, WoK, and SFS. The bridge set, as a cost and time saving measure, retains its Phase II graphics.

In TMP the ship design might have been evolving as they were shooting, so it's unsurprising the TV refit design appears. What's interesting about TWOK is that the yaw/pitch/roll indicators were changed after TMP but still retain the P2 design. On the TMP version of the indicators the ship appears as a dark silhouette against a light background.

As @Bill Thompson said above, the Phase II model, finished as well as the TMP refit, would have been just as beautiful, just a little different. It's apples and different apples.

I really would have loved to see something closer to the artwork for the comic book ad. It's more like a refit than a "brand new ship". I fell in love with this design right off.

I have to confess to really not liking this graphic for showing the shields going up. For one thing, the little lights blinking on, one at a time is friggin' primitive. For another, there's nothing to suggest why the shields can't all turn on at the same time. It's a little jarring, even to someone who isn't tech minded, it just doesn't seem to represent the process, or the fact of it very well.

Just judging from the cover, looks like their phaser is a vague blending of TOS and TMP, rather than what the Phase II phaser was going to look like....basically a TOS with some minor updates, including revised trigger:

Agreed. Looking at that awesome photoshop of TMP movie poster with the movie Enterprise make me believe stronger the producers got it right. Now, I'm hoping another go around of the CG effects for TMP to have that shot of the Enterprise leaving our solar system. Great job, and nice find, whoever did.

As for the retconned argument of 1701-A was redressed from Yorktown, hogwash. 1701-A was a new starship. In the 23rd Century Star Trek, StarFleet was building Starships as fast as Airplanes of today. These vessels (Constitution Class) at that point in time were not experimental ala Excelsior, it's common sense once the engineers mastered the blueprint then later mass produce the bloody thing. Gosh, if it was the ridiculous retconned version, it would've sucked to be the CO of the Yorktown to get the news he's losing his ship and Starfleet is stripping her name and her history to honor James T. Kirk.

Because the Enterprise was going to be decommissioned doesn't mean the whole entire line was going to be. I'm sure the 1st series of 747's were no longer in service but there still 747's in service in our skies. TMP 1701 was like the second generations 747 and 1701- A was like the improved model 747-8I.
