USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

The USS Zumwalt has very little detail and is made up of simple geometric shapes. She is state of the art. The Enterprise was way ahead of her time.

Good point:

Because the TOS Enterprise was funnier in a comedy movie.

Because Shatner was still more connected to that version of Star Trek. He probably always will be.

It is amusing to watch the amount of disrespect TOS gets now. TNG on fans have been bitching about it for thirty years now, finally getting the chance to overwrite it with Discovery.

I agree and the same goes for the space shuttle, but reality doesn't make good TV. The TOS Enterprise design is probably the most "realistic" out of all Trek designs, but that doesn't mean it looks good or "cool". All the ships designed after had a heavier focus on aesthetics, with TNG trying to make them look more streamlined and aerodynamic (for some vague excuse about warp fields or some bs).

(Also wasn't the Zumwalt designed that way for stealth?)

Ah, there we go. It's not whether the statements are accurate or simply different opinions. It's that these specific opinions are perceived to "attack" a show you love.

Well, no one's attacking it. We can love it AND criticise it. Shocking, I know.

I very much love my Mom and the Mrs. ...
I don't go around criticizing either one of them to other people all the time.
And they are both old.

I love TOS. I also love Classic Who.

However I also recognize when designs in both are dated. You can bring things back out of Nostalgia, but as soon as it's expecting you to take the design seriously for an extend period of time it needs updating.

The F-117 was developed out of a concept from 1964, project begun in 1975, and maiden flight in 1981:

Does it look 'dated'?

What does it matter if it is stealth or not when we are talking about designs that originated decades ago? Presumably, future stealth craft will look more radical. It doesn't mean this looks 'dated'.

...what?

The point is that we all love Star Trek; that's why we're here. But if we can't criticise aspects of the show because some of us are unable to hear those criticisms without seeing them as an attack, essentially being insecure about it for some reason, then why have a Trek forum at all?

One of my favourite shows is Babylon 5. Feel free to say what you dislike about the show all you want if it's what you think about it. I won't take it personal. Why would I? Bill's behaviour just baffles me, is all.

I looked at original TOS Enterprise in Star Trek Adversaries, and it looks better than the Discoprise. Not surprised at all :)

It's got windows in the pylons. that makes 0 sense. why not put some windows on the deflector dish too.

oddly, despite its strange smooth angular lines, in some ways the Zumwalt is a throwback to pre-20th century battleship design with its wave-cutting prow and the tumblehome broadside hull. I guess that reenforces your argument.

I think with various updates the original Enterprise would look ok now. The smooth siding doesn't bother me, but the original model was not designed for the more complicated lighting conditions a space scene would have now. Some would say "That's fine, Discovery doesn't USE any lighting" but.. well.. those people are kind of mean. A bit. I'm hoping for some fx improvements in season 2.

My take is, like any era in design, there are certain companies or design bureaus that churn out ships that look different from one another. Nothing else has ever been shown that remotely looks like the TOS Constitution and so if taken as a visual continuity, it has to be excepted almost as a one-off design based on some aesthetic principles that never caught on and went nowhere.

Rather like the RL Zumwalt Class in that regard. A marvelous overpriced bloated design that is being passed over by a refit of the previous ships that came before it.
