Like it wasn’t made in the 1960s.
Can we move this discussion to the Enterprise thread?
That's twisting what I said to find the most negative interpretation. I didn't say that using elements of TOS would make the stories of lesser quality, I said that slavish devotion to what came before should not take precedence over telling the stories you want to tell, or alternatively trying new species makeup and costuming, or redesigning the ships. How would using the original make the stories of lesser quality?
Agree to disagree. I see the details being overwritten, not the legacy itself. If the legacy is in the size of the starship and not in the characters of the show, then I see that as being wrong. That's like saying Tolkien's greatest contribution to the literary and fantasy world is the map of Middle Earth he drew.
The question was, what does a futuristic Earth spaceship with warp drive look like?Like it wasn’t made in the 1960s.

They’re are, but I still love them. TOS is a good series, but it is outdated.Great. Everything - every ship, every uniform - is outdated. This should be one hell of a bonfire.
For me, that is nothing new to Star Trek. So, Discovery fits right. Technological differences? I don't expect a 1960s interpretation of tech to be presented on screen. Hologram tech? Whelp, in TAS they had a full rec room that almost killed crew members. There are also Technological differences, Hologram technology, Kelvin-esque tropes and writing, acting that is abyssmal in some cases, annoying in others, and sometimes brilliant, but when placed in the episode as a whole, becomes drowned out by horrible dialogue
So, nostalgia? Got it.You know, I spent 6 years everynight watching BBCA after work when they ran TNG, and even reran episodes, I still watched them while I ate supper. It never got old, just as when I was a kid and teen, I would do the same back when there were readily seen reruns of TOS. Build me a series that I can feel like that again, and to some extent Voyager was like that.. Build me that series Mr. Kurtzman and I will be on board.![]()

Bad acting? Um, Star Trek. Bad writing? Same. So, it isn't that distracting to me when taken within Star Trek as a whole.

The notion of the visual reboot seems to encompass a general misunderstanding of “future technology” (vis. It must *look* futuristic in order to *be* futuristic) combined with a lack of respect for the audience (“if it doesn’t look futuristic they won’t understand it’s in the future”) plus a sense of embarrassment about the original series worthy of Shatner’s confession to Stewart in “the captains”. I hate to see it if I’m honest. But if enough people repeat “it’s the same ship it’s the same ship” enough times it’ll become fact right? As cheesy as it was at least “trials and tribbleations” had a generally celebratory sense to it. DSC does not convey that sense to me.Great. Everything - every ship, every uniform - is outdated. This should be one hell of a bonfire.
If I’ve learned anything from Star Trek it’s that anything is indeed possible.okay, I might be wrong about that, but is it possible this thread has been a tiny bit derailed into the abyss of the usual "I don't understand why things change an that scares me!" yadda yadda of every other thread around here?
so what your sayingis, that thread is not derailed by the exact same discussion that we have in about 20 other threads on this board?
I wouldn’t go so far as to say “derailed”, no. If we were talking about something completely unrelated and that couldn’t possibly be linked back to new Star Trek on tv I’d say it had been derailed.so what your sayingis, that thread is not derailed by the exact same discussion that we have in about 20 other threads on this board?
