Little things in Trek that just bug you...

^nods^

Actually, I had a thought about that a while back. Given that shields aren't typically a total defense (especially during DS9 and VOY) shouldn't the count go up (towards maximum tolerance) not down?

Not sure why that would matter. If your maximum shield tolerance is a given, you could always convert it to a percentage of 'unused tolerance' that's still left, and perhaps they prefer their standard measure in that way? (So say your tolerance is 700 and you are currently 'using/have already consumed' 500, that would mean you still have (700-500)/700 = 28% left?)

As intelligent as Starfleet officers are, in the heat of battle expressing important information as simply as possible would make sense.

They're trained to understand bridge crisis shorthand. I'm sure if a bridge crew stays together long enough, they develop their own way of expressing things in addition to the standard lingo.

One of the points where Discovery did a good job. I know Lorca is, for a number of reasons, not representative of a model Starfleet captain, but doing a full-on battle simulation on the bridge with your bridge crew is something that really should've been showcased earlier and more often on all the Trek shows.

Immediately after encountering a hostile space buoy, Kirk ordered a series of simulated attack drills that were to be repeated until the crew was proficient. Meanwhile, he and the ship's surgeon had cocktails and green leaves.

Since "The Corbomite Maneuver" was the first episode produced after the pilots, I'd say that was pretty early. As for more often, well, I agree that we could have seen more off that.

Things in the Trek universe that make very little sense. (I am neither speaking of technobabble nor of anything, science related)

The Search For Spock:

Why do McCoy and/or Kirk decide separately that they need to go to Genesis? I've watched the movie several times and I couldn't find any justification for that change of mind(s) (they were supposed to climb the stairs at Mt Seleya)

The Undiscovered Country:

Why does Chang speak much slower in Klingon than he does in English? I know that he's not really a Klingon but shouldn't he make a better show of being fluent in that language than that? Plus how does he manage to say so much with so few words?

At some point, Chang asks Kirk to answer a question quickly and not wait for the translation!!! That only makes sense if Kirk is fluent in Klingon and if so then why does he need the box that he keeps near his ear all the time? (Maybe he's listening to sports...)

The Final Frontier:

Sybok says that he needs a star Ship, but how did he get to the planet without one? How did the Romulan Ambassador who apparently just got there?!!!

DS9 - BADDA BING BADDA BANG:

Worf doesn't like Vic because he's artificial and his intellect is but a simulation created by man.

Worf likes Data because....?

I have many more. Let's see how these will be received.

Feel free to add to this list or to tell me where I am wrong.

A general one from me. Shuttles without warp capability being used for long journeys away from the ship, when the enterprise would cover the distance in minutes.

In generations, why Picard chose that moment to leave the nexus and defeat soran, when he could have saved his nephew, the observatory, and apprehended soran. For all Picard knew, Geordi was dead already too.

None of Shinzons actions or motives or back story make any kind of sense at all. Why was he pissed at Earth? It was the Romulans that dumped him in a mine.

Any time the transporters are not working and there are shuttles that have their own independent transporter system. Or, the lack of an Emergency Landing Plan A or B in TFF. I find the lack of emergency planning to make the least amount of sense in Star Trek.

Chang is a real Klingon. He was just working with the conspirators in order to make sure Gorkon's peace treaty never occurred.

And I assume he always spoke slow Klingon, and just that it was translated to normal cadence English for our benefit and for Kirk's crew at dinner. It's possible that he speaks a dialect that is more slow in its mannerisms, like some Earth languages.

His Adlai Stevenson moment with Kirk was for the benefit of the Klingon show trial, and Kirk did in fact wait for the translation.

Chang seemed to be a throwback, or maybe a nod to the TOS-era smooth forehead (augment-virus) Klingons.

In hindsight, Star Trek VI's big bulky translators ties in nicely with Discovery's insistence that Klingons weren't accustomed to the universal translator. Even if it doesn't jibe well with Enterprise or The Original Series.

Mental illness as a result of a lifetime of trauma and abuse. He was mad at humans for having privillaged lives while he suffered horribly, and Picard in particular for having the life he should have had.

No, it doesn't make much sense but I've seen several RL examples where people have reacted similarly (albeit not to the genocidal extremes one does when one controls an army and gigantic deathship with a WMD on board, of course)

One thing that really bugs me is the sloppiness with which they write their scenarios... For instance, Khan says that there is only ONE remaining lifeform on Ceti Alpha Five, IE the thing that he put in Chekov's and Terrell's ears. But how does that ONLY remaining lifeform survives on the planet without food? Does it eat dirt? If there is only ONE lifeform on a planet then it must be one that can make its own food, like a plant, but even our plants need bacteria to survive, in truth if only ONE lifeform was to remain on a planet it would have to be a bacteria and definitely not an elaborate thing like the monstrosity that Khan was keeping in that tank.

It was the last survivor. It had plenty to eat until CA6 went kablooey, and then it shifted its focus onto other surviving animals and the supermen. After fifteen years, only the eel and the supermen survive, and I guess the eels can go for months or years without eating while rummaging around.

Of course, I have no idea why they refrain from eating while their victims follow Khan's orders. Awfully nice of them.
