Who would make a great new Captain for Discovery?

Patrick Stewart and Rene Auberjonois are the oldest, being born in 1940. 78 isn't too bad.

Eh, it's about the average male life expectancy. Though given "retired" Trek actors are mostly modestly wealthy to comfortable, they should have a few years on that as well.

Still, people die in middle age of things like heart attacks and cancer all the time. The TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT casts have been remarkably healthy overall. Look at Babylon 5. O'Hare, Doyle, Biggs, Furst, Conaway, and Katsulas are all dead already - basically 1/3rd of the main cast.

I don't know if he has been mentioned before, but Bruce Greenwood left a very good impression on me as a captain. Or is he too old?

I could cope with having the other Lorca as Captain. Poor devil, if only he could find his way home.

Jason Isaacs. As Prime Lorca.

It was a waste of his talent and presence to have his character turned into a weak one-off villain and killed off in one episode.

The man just exudes so much authority and has a commanding presence. We haven't had a badass captain of his calibur since the Sisko days.

I get why he's always cast to play badass general roles in movies.

What an entrance!

Considering there has been no casting announcement on Discovery's new Captain but we've heard about Pike, I'm wondering if we will in fact be getting Prime Lorca? Perhaps he's been picked up by the Enterprise and that is why they are intercepting Discovery? Considering Isaac's schedule maybe there was uncertainty about him returning hence the vagueness about Discovery's new Captain in the season finale. Isaacs seemed to love being a part of discovery, so it wouldn't surprise me if they worked to get him back on board.

Bruce Campbell would be awesome. Years ago, I had this weird idea of him as Admiral Kirk in a post-Wrath of Khan reboot where Spock never comes back.

As long as this new Lorca isn't written to be obsessed with Michael Burnham, I'm all for more Jason Isaacs.

If the quality of their entrance is a determining factor, this bloke gets my vote.

Part of me wishes it would be Kirk. Then all the right people would go into catatonic shock and we could move on.

It has been speculated in the past that the Enterprise wasn't Kirk's first command. The Making of Star Trek says Kirk's first command was a destroyer. The Discovery, despite being a science vessel, is outfitted to be a heavy destroyer. And, since DSC is at the end of 2257 at this point, the Farragut has likely already encountered the Deadly Cloud at Tycho IV.

:D

I'm not sure if he would agree to do a Trek show. He was asked to play Jack (of DS9's "Jack Pack") and turned it down...

How about Jeffrey Dean Morgan? He had a miserable time playing a Xindi on ENT (Carpenter Street) but as far as I know, his problem was with the makeup and prosthetics, not Trek in general. So if he was offered a human role, he might take it.

In fact I'm liking the idea of JDM playing a captain who we know will later become the bad guy, like Ron Tracey.

St. John Talbot.
Colonel West.

Talbot didn't strike me as the Starfleet type...

As for West, he is probably a first lieutenant in his SFMC regiment. Although I wouldn't half mind seeing him, actually. Perhaps his experiences in the Klingon War helped shape the kind of person we saw in ST VI? Hell, we might even see Leland recruiting him into Section 31...

If she weren't already doing The Expanse (I call canon!), Shohreh Aghdashloo would be an interesting captain for a season. Years ago, after loving her on 24, in a fanfic I never wrote, I imagined her as an enigmatic Deltan chief medical officer and think she'd be great.

I'd also love it if they went for an established alien for a season. They could go anywhere they wanted with new aliens created for the series, and it would anchor them to previous ones. Plus I'd love to see new makeup revitalize an established race. Mostly I think it'd be the farthest departure from any captain we've seen, including the one we just lost, while remaining familiar. How about an Efrosian or a Kreetassan or a Denobulan?

I'm going to put Kim Dickens on the list too.
Her character died on Fear The Walking Dead. She was knocking it out of the park with the character, and she didn't request to leave the show, so I don't quite understand the move. She does have the Deadwood revival coming up, so I'm not sure how practical getting Dickens would be, and I'm sure the Disco writing room knows what they're doing by now as far as the captain goes (I'd hope so, anyway), but still... I'm putting Kim Dickens on the list.
