News Pegg: Star Trek Beyond Marketing Was Bad

There's nothing really compelling about it. I've never rewatched it, though I have STID due to people here extolling Kirk's reticence to fire on Qonos. STB -- meh. First one I didn't see twice in theaters actually.

That's my biggest problem with it. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie but apart from the Enterprise destruction sequence (which is awesome and the best part of the film IMO) for the rest of the run time the movie just seems to just... get to the end without there being any real peril for everyone involved. It all just seems to slot together too neatly, and never really hits the heights of that excellent first act. The end chase through Yorktown is all well and good, and visually spectacular but, there's just a whiff off it being another generic Star Trek villian's ending about it. I just can't quite put my finger on it. It's all just a bit... lightweight.

That being said I enjoy it every bit as much as the first two and rewatch it just as often.

In all honesty, it’s highly likely it was Pegg getting a Madness reference into the title, and probably being amazed when nothing else turned up for the title. ‘Don’t watch that, watch this, this is the heavy heavy monster sound.....’

wonder if Beyond was Orcis title too or if hed have called his Shatner ST3 something else. think it probably Peggs title and Orcis 3 would've been 'Star Trek Revolutions' or something

Dr Who's 50th anniversary is how you do a 50th, almost a year of celebrating Who across many formats leading up to the 50th special which was phenomenal, then we get to ST 50th and almost nothing, then a trailer is released, then nothing until the movie, and that was how the ST 50th felt from my point of view.
I guess just you, me and Simon Pegg feel this way...???

I am one of those who LOVED Star Trek Beyond -- thought it an excellent 50th anniversary film.
I was TOTALLY disapponted by te lack of marketing...barely saw any commercials until maybe like 1-2 weeks out.

Rihanna had a song & video , extremely loosely based on the movie...but MAN, that was like never pushed on radio or anything. So they wasted whatever they paid to make it happen.

There were no "Happy Meals" as far as I know... the first 2 were Burger King meals...but if they didn't have a contract aymore, it would have been nice for McDOnald's to pick it up..i remember getting a TMP Happy Meal (the first year the Happy Meal was really pushed by McDOnald's), and would have loved to get one for my daughters. But -- NOTHING While not the key driver, little things like that help marketing immensely.

Did the release time play any factor? Secret Life of Pets and Jason Bourne the next week -- did they take the thunder from Star Trek?

The Rhianna song was pushed on YouTube and Spotify...that’s where I saw it anyway. And it was good. Very good. That and the poster were both better than I would have expected from Paramount tbh.

Its the only time I think Rhianna can sing lol

I thought it was only me....great hair though. And Sledgehammer was really hummable. I would say ear-worm, but this is a Trek board and before we know it we will be back at Khan, then Cumberbatch and before you know it...
Do not ask me to name anything else she’s done though, I think I opted out of popular music in the early twentieth century after a stint in a record store. Of course, I suspect the entire music industry may have done the same...

I thought Sledgehammer was an excellent tune. Worthy of a Bond film IMO, and certainly better than the last few Bond themes we've had. It was actually played quite a lot on Radio 2 around the time of the film's release, but only made it to number 69 in the UK charts, which is a shame.

wow that is bad. id have thought any new song by her would automatically be top 10. maybe word got out it was for star trek lol

sledgehammer is synonymous with summer 2016 for me, right up there with stranger things season 1 and pokemon go.

it's pegg's. i don't remember where he said this but the story goes something along the lines of pegg and lin discussing the goal of the film by saying they wanted to go "beyond star trek" and they hit on that as the title.

i thought star trek beyond could function as a suitable end to a pretty solid trilogy, despite being lighter fare. i wonder how we'll feel about it now that it's just another entry in what'll probably end up being a quadrilogy. with the next film almost certain to be an "event" film to close things out, star trek beyond may end up being the "fun one" or something.

LOL somehow I don't see that, Star Trek the Voyage Home was a better "fun" movie IMHO. It actually built off the previous films instead of ignoring them. Not to mention if I was going to sit down to watch a Star Trek movie for fun it will either be STID or Star Trek 09. I though Beyond was kinda depressing, destroying the Enterprise, lost most of its crew, then Kirk was some kind of depressed, Spock was in mourning. I could go on, but you've seen it. Not a fun movie in my opinion.

It felt fun to me in the way Star Trek III did. They've lost just about everything, and are reduced to coming back from the odds being against them.

anybody else getting a star trek beyond vibe from solo: a star wars story?

beyond was better reviewed, but the general consensus about beyond was that it was fairly disposable, much like solo. and box experienced soft office numbers. though paramount would've loved solo's BO if beyond had done those numbers.

its hard to fathom a Wars movie might end up with a similar domestic&worldwide box office number to Trek (Solo looks on course for STID numbers ..unless people get over Avengers & Deadpool and realise theres a SW movie out and it picks up abit)

We did not know that it will be disposable beforehand unlike with Solo.

I'm neither the biggest fan of Rihanna, nor of "Sledgehammer" in particular. It's just not my style of music.

That being said: Having a Star Trek song by Rihanna was awesome. I loved it! I want more of that. In fact, I may like the music video to sledgehammer even more than the actual movie. And if my Trek has to go with pop music, do it this well!
Way better than "Faaith of the Heart" btw:guffaw:

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the next Star Wars movie, I think a lot of people have soured after Last Jedi.

Sadly, Solo cost WAY more to make than ST09 or Beyond, having been filmed essentially twice. They are gonna lose money hard. Beyond maybe broke even or slightly pulled a tiny profit.
