USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Which means the main hangar deck is smaller than the TOS hangar deck(extremely unlikely given this show's track record) or the bridge is a LOT bigger(fairly likely).

I liked the design on first blush, and still do, but it's increasingly looking like Frankenstein's monster to my eye -- stitched together from different components that don't quite go together. In profile, for example, it looks like the refit Enterprise with the old nacelles stuck on top. Hard to tell which ship it is at a glance. Even the JJprise, which I strongly dislike, had that going for it.

Really don't like the illumination of the registry on the top of the saucer. I guess those are lights and not windows? They're huge! Overdone, IMO.

Still, could have been much worse.

The shuttle bay only really needs to accommodate one shuttle at a time, perhaps two so they can have ingoing and outgoing traffic in ports. But it doesn't need to be wide like Discover's bay. Deep perhaps, but not wide.

That's my problem with it. They changed it, but they changed it by haphazardly throwing refit and TOS parts together, and just added greebles. If you're going to modernize a design, don't stick so strictly to designs from the 60s and 70s. Especially that deflector...gah!

Exactly so.

A big part of the show's overall problem in terms of visual design - apart from "dull" - is that the decision makers seem to want to be just a little bit pregnant.

Well, they did stick that weird, pointless lip on the back of the shuttlebay.

There is nothing wrong with the deflector.

The secondary hull reminds me a lot of the Phase II

Another change between the John Eaves final concept art and the show were the warp engine grill glows I think.

I'll have to go back and look at the facebook quotes, but I think I saw that.

3D artist Chris Kuhn paintstakingly modeled the new DSC Enterprise by lining up his 3d wireframes to screen grabs of the Enterprise from the end of the episode. What resulted was pretty darn accurate I think. So I did some different view renders to get a better look. This one just isn't growing on me...

Yeah this looks a lot more right than any of the other fan models so far. I think the sweep of the struts might be a little more like TMP and a little less fat on the bottom than he has it here, and there's some small surface details that I think are just a little bit off in this version: the inset quadrilaterals instead of the classic TOS triangles on the underside of the saucer, for instance; the inset pattern referencing the dark rectangles from TOS are missing on the inner pylons; I'm pretty sure the nacelle shape from the side has a curve to it and isn't just a modified conic cylinder; and I think it's probable that the impulse engines raise up off the saucer in such a way that they make more of an excelsior-class style raised inset on the upper saucer, but that's speculation and we won't know until S02.

I know you don't love the design and aren't likely do do a lot more renders, but it would be cool to see it with a bit more of a TMP-style pearlescence to the material.

Anyway really really good work, to both of you.

The only real issue I can see is the 2 large notches on the bottom of the saucer. From the episode, they are triangular, just like they were on the TOS version (even if those were only decals or paint).

Otherwise a beautiful rendering.

Dan, any chance you can tweak one lengthening the neck, getting rid of those stupid f&*king saucer registry illuminating mega windows things, the extraneous charcoal colored vertical cross hatching in the middle of the engines and adding a proper bridge dome ?
Know it’s not as easy as that to do but if I want to see anyone’s tweaks it’s yours

They might be looking triangular because of the shadow only. I'm not sure.

I've looked at it over and over. The recesses seem triangular even without the benefit of shadowing. Getting a decent screencap is impossible for me, even with a 1080 video. Crispness doesn't seem to have been a priority for them.

Look again. I thought they were triangular too but after reading your post I went back and I think it's quite probable that they are in fact rectangular. In fact, if you look at the fan model above you can see how they might look triangular from both angles.

What I don't understand is how the hell this artist noticed that.

Nah, they upscaled the ship so the shuttles should fit fine. I've seen 1,500 feet mentioned online (the original was 947, the refit 1,000) but without a concrete source.

There's going to come a point where I'm just going to ignore any and all CBS scale numbers that were created after 2017 because damn, these guys have size issues and it shows.

289 meters is just fine. It worked for fifty years. Put down the crack pipe and stop thinking everything in outer space is cooler if we make it twice as big.
