Power Rangers

I just finished Denji Sentai Megaranger, and I'm sad it's over. It's definitely been one of my favorites. The Rangers were more memorable and distinct than in some previous seasons (well, except Shun/Mega Blue, who was kind of nondescript), and Dr. Kubota was a terrific mentor character. The actors were effective and charismatic. And the storyline got really intense in the last run of episodes. I mentioned before that its use of secret identities reminded me of Power Rangers -- except in PR, the villains almost always know the Rangers' secret identities yet rarely do anything with the knowledge (like blow up their houses when they're asleep), but here, as soon as the Megarangers are outed, the impact is immediate and nearly catastrophic.

I note there are some vague similarities with the corresponding Power Rangers in Space finale, "Countdown to Destruction" -- the focus on the larger public, the sentiment turning somewhat against the Rangers, the people ultimately standing up for the Rangers, the exposure of the Rangers' identities. Although the Megaranger version went somewhat darker, of course. Though there are some things that PRiS did better, I think. The villains in Megaranger are a little underdeveloped. Yugande wasn't nearly as complex as his adapted version Ecliptor, and there was no rivalry to speak of between Yugande and Guirail the way there was with Ecliptor and Darkonda. The closest thing they had to Astronema was Shibolena, who was menacing at first but faded into the background until the last couple of episodes, where she was belatedly given a bit of backstory along with the main villain Doctor Hinelar. It's disappointing that they set up Hinelar as this old friend of Kubota's who'd turned evil, but never really got around to exploring their backstory and the reasons for Hinelar's turn to villainy until the climactic episode, where it all got crammed into dialogue during the giant mecha battle.

The nature of Neziregia was a little vague too. There was a rough implication that the villains came from cyberspace; they could travel through the Internet, and Yugande's design suggested a 3D wireframe graphic brought to life. But they were also treated as being invaders from an alien dimension/energy field. And there was that weird "twisting" preoccupation in the early episodes that was largely forgotten thereafter. (I do wonder if their name was a play on the English phrase "nether regions," as in Hell/the Underworld.)

One element I didn't care for was the villain's goofy chibi mascot thing, Bibidebi. It was never explained what the hell he was. And as the character that made the monsters grow by biting them, he falls into the same annoying category as characters like Acha and Kocha (Klank and Orbus) from Ohranger/Zeo, or to an extent, Gauche from Lupin vs. Pat. Whenever the gigantification process depends on some villain actually physically approaching or touching the monster to deliver the growth formula, it frustrates me that the Rangers never realize they should just shoot that villain before they reach the fallen monster, and thereby avoid the whole giant battle (and all future giant battles if they manage to destroy the growth-inducer).

I'm reading the wikipage on the Nejiranger and the weird twisting seems to be peoples feeling being "twisted"/ distorted

-Great episode last week. I have a feeling that Emma Gordini will be back someday. I had a hard time understanding her french and I only took highschool french lol. A trivia page says the actress actually knows french

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/KaitouSentaiLupinrangerVsKeisatsuSentaiPatranger

-More backstory for Kairi. He really connected with Emma and having a sibling

-I liked the humor with the security guard. A boring day turns exciting and then a thief steals your cloths haha

-Serious blow for the Lupinranger with losing a lupin collection piece. That darn Machine Trigger Biker. This will have ramifications for awhile with their dislike of the police. Interestingly Gauche didn't arrive to make the ganglar grow

Or he's not dead yet....
( I caught a tiny glimpse of Bletz in the next episode preview)

This weeks gangler info page. I had a feeling it was based around a reindeer

http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Brez_Arenishka

His appearance is based on a deer, presumably one from the extinct Megaloceros genus like the Irish Elk.

Tomorrow Zamigo makes his official debut.

A pretty strong, dramatic episode with good character work as usual, though built around a fairly silly premise. Hard to believe a pendant that looks like a toy jet plane would be some prized jewelry piece, or that it would be generations old.

I also find it rather odd that the Patrangers' default policy toward Ganglers is to use deadly force rather than attempting to arrest them. Or that they'd be so casual about destroying stolen property (the Collection pieces), which is the sort of thing that police would usually try to seize intact. It seems rather un-Japanese for police to be so quick to use force. You'd think they'd have some kind of capture protocol for the monsters instead, like Timeranger/Time Force had.

It's typical that when Keiichiro contemplates a beautiful, warm spring day, his only thought is that it'll increase crime. Meanwhile, I can't help but notice that he's a similar character type to Megaranger's similarly named Kouichiro/Mega Black, who was also the ultra-serious, disciplined member of the team, though not as fiercely as Keiichiro. It does seem there are certain recurring patterns in Sentai character names, e.g. names or kanji relating to their Ranger colors. So I'm wondering if there's some specific meaning to the "-ichiro" part.

Hmm... io9 just posted the following item about an upcoming online special reuniting three ex-Super Sentai heroines (Hurricane Blue, DekaYellow, and MagiPink) who are now mothers and must team up to save the Earth:

https://io9.gizmodo.com/toeis-next-super-sentai-special-is-devoted-to-the-great-1825264247

The article claims it's from Toei, but there's a trailer on Twitter and it looks like it was shot on videotape, so I'm wondering if it's actually a fan film or something.

Edit: I found the original link, and though apparently Toei did announce it, I still get the impression that it's some kind of side project made by a fan club -- maybe sort of an officially authorized fan film?

Yeah it's basically a giant Mother's day web special that was able to snag 3 former heroines and a former Ninninger(Starninger/Ninja Steel Gold)

Good episode this week.

Yes. This is a pretty intense show. I haven't seen that many Sentai seasons, but this is the most dramatic one I've seen since Jetman. A number of them started out weak and gradually got better, but this one's been firing on all cylinders from the get-go. Really impressive visuals too, and innovative monster battles, even if this one fell prey to the Inverse Ninja Rule, in that 100 Bletzes were easier to beat than just one. Although it was somewhat justified by the fact that they were copies whose purpose was to be disposable decoys, so it was believable that they were more fragile than the real thing.

It was nice to see the beginnings of a friendship between Keiichiro and Kairi. It's nice to see that Keiichiro's commitment to protecting people has a kinder side.

Something to laugh at after a rough week at work. After a few tense episodes something ludicrous was needed to break up the seriousness

We've had quite a few gender swap episodes in Power Rangers and cross dressing is famous in stage and movies for the Japanese. Still. This is an episode only the Japanese could pull off lol

Yes. Some of the approaches to things are a bit out dated like Keiichiro reaction when being cornered by Sakuya

We get a little background for Sakuya and it was hilarious to watch Tsukasa's reactions.

Interesting fact. Kazusa Okuyama actually has shoulder length hair. She wears a hair extension as Tsukasa. I guess it was to differentiate from Umika's actress. Still looked cute with the short hair and business suit

Hammer dial fighter is a special campaign item that people can get if they buy some products till May 21th. I doubt it will make an appearance again but there you go

This weeks Lupin collection piece was GoRoader GT/Road Attack Zord.

In the preview for next weeks/This saturday's episode you can clearly tell the next Lupin collection piece is the Time force morpher/Chrono brace.

The video isn't there. All I get is "Publishing in progress."

EDIT: Okay, it's working now. Although I found a different version on YouTube anyway.

I like how comfortable Sakuya was with his genderfluidity. Voice aside, he was the only one of the three who was even slightly convincing as the opposite sex.

It's safe to say that little if any footage from this episode is likely to be used in the eventual Power Rangers adaptation, what with all the clutching of body parts.

I don't get why everyone was so disgusted when Sakuya said he figured out the Gangler's identity through "woman's intuition." I wonder if that was an inexact translation. But it's the same in both videos.

Well that's fantastic news. The show has been terrible since Saban bought the rights back, so I'm excited to see another company take a stab at the franchise.

Haven't had a chance to view last weeks episode but heard it was okay. Hey it's a Tooma episode with a kid. Check marking off the kid and a blue focus episode in one

This weeks Lupin Collection piece is the chrono changer/morpher repainted

All the past sentai props reused as lupin collection pieces so far. The dino battery/ Ohranger cell needs correcting though
