Power Rangers

We finished our rewatch of Mystic Force and have moved on to RPM. I had forgotten how dark/funny RPM is.

Lupinranger VS Patoranger episode 4

The Lupinranger's are drawn to the missing peoples case due their experiences. We also get a small amount of teamwork on the ground and using both PatoKaiser(powerful) with LupinKaiser being more agile.

Hmm Gauche wants to experiment on people. I wonder if anything will come out of that or it's just a sick thing the Ganglers want to do.

The flashback to Tsukasa and Keiichiro early days as cadets was nice.

Kogure's a shady person no doubt.

The artifact for this week is Goggle Pink's ribbon.

From future episode summaries episode 5 and 6 are a two-parter

I really hope Lupinranger VS Patoranger is chosen for a future Power Rangers adaptation.

Super Ninja Steel: "The Need for Speed" wasn't bad by current standards. It seems they're trying harder this season to give the Rangers flaws that lead them to make mistakes so they can Learn Important Lessons, which is formulaic but still a step up from having them be blandly perfect heroes. And I'm always happy to see an episode center on Sara. Not only is Chrysti Ane one of the most gorgeous female Rangers ever, but she's a fairly good comic actress and the most expressive of the cast, and her performance is fun to watch. And the fact that she spent most of the episode in figure-hugging athletic attire was a definite plus.

Victor and Monty are still probably the worst comic-relief characters in Power Rangers history, or at least the most annoying. Honestly, given how many times Victor has been exposed as cheating in order to win trophies or make money, why does anyone even give him a chance to compete anymore? I mean, good grief, some of the things he and Monty have done would constitute criminal fraud. They should've been sent to reform school by now.

LvP Ep. 4: Nice. We finally get an episode focusing more on the cops than the thieves, and we also get the first tentative cooperation between the two teams against their mutual threat. On the one hand, I like the contrast between the girlish Lupin Yellow/Umika and the cool, no-nonsense Patren 3gou/Tsukasa, but of course they just had to undermine Tsukasa right away with "Oh, she's still typically girly after all." Still, the scene about her wrestling with her "forbidden relationship" with the stuffed animal was hilarious.

The action is still impressive. I liked the use of the forest/mountain setting for the giant battle -- it brought a fresh angle to things. And it's nice to see a climax built mostly around suits and miniatures, since the show's been a little too CGI-heavy to date.

By the way, it struck me while watching that the oversized combination-lock dials on top of the LupinRangers' Dial Fighters are meant to reflect the top hat motif of their costumes. Or at least Red's is, since it's colored black with a red band, and becomes the "hat" atop LupinKaiser's head.

Our first two parter and it gives us a bit more intrigue

- I just noticed Destras foam tubes on his arms. Cheap but effective. He’s got his own agenda too.

-So there’s an difference between actual lupin collection pieces and Police equipment

- if anyone is worried about the first quarter toys hogging the spotlight don’t be. Bike and trigger are all that are planned till the 6th ranger debuts in June/July

We have plenty of swapping and configurations with just bike and trigger to last us till then

Oh. Sorry. Let me clarify. This the first two-parter for this series. There's been plenty of two-parters(maybe even three?) in past super sentai series.

Super Ninja Steel: "Caught Red Handed" was pretty dumb even by SNS standards. Brody's accused of stealing the teacher/principal/sole faculty member's heirloom compass and it takes half the episode to figure out that Monty captured the truth on his camera, even though he was visibly and obnoxiously recording everything in the room and nobody there thought to check his camera, even though the teacher/principal/sole faculty member specifically mentioned the security camera outside. And the compass plot did nothing but take up time. I thought the compass would end up being turned into a new Zord or weapon or something, but it didn't, at least not this week. And then at the end we got what should've been a really major story development with Mme. Odius getting her own unbeatable Megazord, something that they could've built the whole episode around, but it was just this tacked-on finale. Also, Odius said the previous three Galactic Ninjas had been destroyed, but I'm pretty sure the first survived.

Luckily I get to cleanse my palate with LvP right afterward. Things are indeed heating up; after the two Ranger teams cooperated against a common foe last week, now they end up directly at odds, and the tension rises. We're starting to see Kairi's ambivalence about being forced to become a thief, and maybe Keiichiro had a moment's doubt about the police using tech taken from the Lupin Collection.

I do wish the gadgets were less garish and blatantly toylike. I just realized how incongruous it is for these "Phantom Thieves" -- a term that implies stealth -- to transform using gadgets that loudly shout out their designations and transformation phrases in an oily game-show-host voice. I remember the GoBusters' equipment doing that same annoying thing, so I guess it's fairly standard, and my assumption is that the actual toys play the same sound clips when they're activated.

After finishing my rewatch of Samurai and taking a brief detour into space to binge the six-episode fifth season of Voltron: Legendary Defender, I've started a rewatch of Dino Charge, and, having just finished Breaking Black, am finding an appreciation for the DC Rangers as a group that previously I didn't have, although it took me until Episodes 3 and 4, respectively, to lay aside my previous feelings on Tyler and Shelby (having considered the former to be annoying and off-putting and the latter to be extremely dumb and unlikeable).

^What? Shelby's awesome!

Not when she was acting like a bad employee and a petulant child in Powers from the Past and Past, Present, and Fusion (especially the former).

I watched Let Sleeping Zords Lie for the first time last night, and just when I was, as noted, starting to warm up to Shelby, she took a U-turn back into the unlikeable zone with her behavior for much of the story.

I did like seeing her and Kendall work together and build the E-Tracer and thought it was a nice parallel to Jungle Fury that she, the only girl on the team, got to find/bring in the first Auxiliary Zord, but the way they got to those two plot points could've and arguably should've been handled better.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to share some of my thoughts on Dino Charge now that I'm 11 episodes into it.

For starters, I have to confess that the season has surprised me with how good it's become, especially after not starting out on a very positive note.

Even more surprising is how much I'm enjoying this group of Rangers as a unit, even though there's been a few hiccups along the way in terms of characterization for a couple of them.

I think the newly introduced Sir Ivan is my favorite individual character right now, though, as he's equal parts Merrick, Leanbow/Korraag, and the Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog characters Rohan, Ivar, and Garrett, and I can't wait to see more of him.

I also really want to see more of Prince Phillip, who, for some reason, was almost immediately likeable for me despite not being all that nice at the start, and, knowing that he's destined to be a Ranger himself, I'm intrigued to see what his own personal journey is and how he ends up interacting with the others once he officially joins them.

Before I move away from the Rangers and their allies, I want to say that I really like Keeper; he reminds me a little bit of Lerigot mixed with Sensei Kanoi Watanabe, the Arthurian Legends character of Merlin, and Harry Potter's Albus Dumbledore, which is neat.

I also like Kendall, although she's very much being relegated to the cookie-cutter "scientific support" role right now and consequently doesn't have a lot of depth to her character, but, again knowing that she's destined for better things gives me hope that we'll start seeing an evolution in her characterization soon.

Moving onto the villains, I really like them, especially Poisandra and Fury. Sledge does have a tendency to get a little bit one-note, especially since he hasn't personally faced off with the team since Episode 3, and it's disappointing that the producers and writers took an opportunity for some fun storytelling off the table by masculinating Curio, but on the whole I've found the group really entertaining and have liked the way their conflicts with the Rangers have unfolded thus far.

It's still a little too early for me to say for sure where Dino Charge will end up in my Favorite Series rankings, but I've been enjoying it to a far greater degree than I thought I would, as noted, and am looking forward to seeing how the rest of the story unfolds.

In case anybody is interesting, the 2017 movie is streaming for free for Amazon Prime members.

Keiichiro came to his senses instead of being the cliche of a hot blooded red ranger.

We are officially introduced to the mysterious Zamigo who likes to chew ice and is providing intel to Destra.

We have favoritism in this series already with the general public taking sides on which team they like the best.

I'm glad Tsukasa slapped some sense into Keiichiro.

Not only do we get the instrumetal version of the theme but we get the separated versions too

Ground battle- Patranger

Mecha battle- Lupinranger

Also the Lupin Collection piece was a prop from the 80's sentai Flashman

Another solid LvP episode, with a nice little arc for Keiichiro and Tsukasa, and the two teams maybe gaining a slight bit of respect for each other. It was an interesting touch how the teams sort of accidentally acted in concert to destroy Bumdoldt, with the Patrangers' bike wheel attack thingie going right into the open safe the Lupins had just emptied.

I'm starting to find Tsukasa increasingly attractive. She's hot when she's angry.

This week was the first time I really paid attention to the visuals in the main title, because before I've been trying to read all the subtitles scattered all over the screen. They've got some clever little vignettes going on in there.

No Super Ninja Steel this week. I didn't miss it.
