USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

How do you say "stupid as fuck" in Russian?

Because it can communicate extra-terrestrially almost instantaneously using non-EM radiation and no booster tower, as mentioned.

Why do I have to spell out everything? Why didn't you read and quote the rest of the post which addresses this? It's more advanced in a single way, and more primitive in every other way.

You make a one-dimensional comparison that is essentially meaningless. Sure, Trek communicators and phones are used to communicate at a distance. But the Trek communicator is radically more advanced in a way a phone can't even possibly match. And there's no need for it to run apps, since an accompanying tricorder can interface with the massive ship's database (and by proxy, the entire Federation database).

If Star Trek people came across an iphone, they'd think it was a cute toy, and might find the craftsmanship and capabilities quaint.

One-dimensional? Did you AGAIN miss the content of the post you replied to? Do you have any idea what smartphone can do? The ONLY thing the communicator is better at is range.

And now you've just argued that communicators are superior to smartphone in every way because... starfleet officers can use _another_ device to do most of the same things, even though clearly a TOS tricorder can't do half of was a smartphone can do. That's stupid. If they need to use another device, then the communicator doesn't do these things, which was my point from the start.

Yes, I'm sure they'd find it quaint that in one case they're holding the entire set of the ship's capabilities in the palm of one hand, and in the other they hold... a communicator.

The Communicator is a military device, not a public phone, it has one job, to communicate.

It's probably not going to have all the same features of an average citizens communication device as it doesn't need them.

I'd think having a single device that can do everything a portable computer can do AND be a communicator would be extremely useful for Starfleet officers, but I guess you can't argue with those with predetermined conclusions.

The DSC Enterprise bothers me. It's not bad, but it's not quite right. It lacks the charm of the original's long neck and what that says. What the high, less decorative, pylons say. TOS was a ship of space and exploration. This looks fine, but it lacks a certain curious grace. A certain utilitarian clip. It's too rad new toy, and I don't buy it as a weird future spaceship, like I did the original. Plus, look at the back of those nacelles; they scream rockets. And what is with the lip behind the shuttle bay? Shuttles don't need runways; they don't have wheels. And big impulse engines scream tiny penis.

I have to get a better look at it next season. Again, it's fine, compared to what might have been. But it's just kind of okay.

Well, for what it's worth the TOS pilot versions of the Enterprise had vents or holes at the back ends of her nacelles and even some warp-capable ships that were later retconned to exist long before TOS had warp nacelles with slots and vents on their rear shrouds. It's not a new concept and this is actually a design feature that is faithful to the way the Enterprise looks at this point in her history.

Oh, for Christ's sake...

Most people watching a show like Trek don't think about this kind of thing. The trouble with Trek communicators as representing something "futuristic" is that when people see Kirk or Burnham or whoever pull out a little box and talk into it, they naturally put it into the same category as their cellphone. Which is a prosaic and not at all futuristic thing, these days.

This is not helped by the continual association that Trek fans make to the rest of the world between Trek's communicators and cellphones in their boosterish (and mistaken) assertions that the TV gimmick inspired the invention of the real-world device.

And can be used as a sonic weapon as in the case of "Friday's Child(TOS)" when Kirk and Spock used their communicators to emit a hypersonic(?) frequency that caused a rockslide to impede the Klingon Kras and the Capellan warriors who were looking for them.

Which is where the reboot/restart argument comes in to play. Honestly, a good compromise on the two items may be unsatisfactory. I personally would like to see more future forward looking on tech as well as characters.

How was that rude towards Russians?
Just read as a bite towards Russians. Could just be a simple miscommunication with how you were posing the image towards the statement beneath it.

Also I agree that I would prefer a Star Trek more future driven visually rather than looping old tropes, but in the end from a production perspective the compromise is probably the best place in their minds to reach the largest audience possible.

Here's what a modern portable communications device(cincgars) looks like in the military in 2018. It's expensive, reliable, secure, and sucks ass to carry around. It's about the size of a small shoebox, and is heavier than your car's stereo.

Here's what a handheld GPS(referred to as a "dagr")looks like in today's military. Much less unpleasant to carry; about the size of a multimeter, or obd2 scanner.

...but it's still enormous compared to an iphone.

You can do a HUD on a window as well as armor it. If I'm going to be told that a communicator, which appears to be less functional than a contemporary smart phone, is more advanced than my (outdated) phone, then I can reasonably believe that a "window" can be enhanced to protect crew members delicate eyeballs, and enhance targets, while (at the same time) allow for navigation when the power goes out. Because, that is going to happen.

I'll keep the window.
A window on a starship wouldn't work. For proof, turn on the lights in your house and look out the window at night. All you'd see in the window is the bridge crew's reflection. It's why IRL, astronauts don't have lights inside their helmets. You wouldn't be able to see anything outside the window.

*Sighs* Enhanced viewscreen with the ability to see out the ship when power goes down.
