News Kurtzman To Direct Discovery Season Two Premiere

He's also one of the producers of the show.

I'd like to see Roxanne direct an episode, since we got Frakes last year.

While I thought The Mummy reboot was uninspired, I didn't hate it like so many others did. It was dumb fun. Kurtzman will do fine directing Discovery.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

Star Trek: Discovery Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman will be directing the first episode of the second season of Discovery. Back in February,...

I’d assume there’s a difference between directing a TV show and a movie. It’s possible one person good at one might be bad at the other.

I'm curious about that as well. After THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 bombed he seems to have dropped out entirely aside from producing credits, which may be in name only. After the partnership split, Kurtzman has really been the only one active in some capacity.

I recall rumors of Trek 3 being that he was very difficult to work with and the studio was never happy with the drafts he was delivering with his writers. I have to assume there was a serious breakdown of some sort because that forced the next set of writers to start from scratch on a very tight schedule.

Wasn't the original version of Beyond rumored to be what the next movie was rumored to be about? Time travel and Kirk's dad or some shit.

I don't think Kirk's dad was involved originally. Apparently the idea was to try to get Shatner on board as an older Kirk. They probably still liked the concept enough to want to retool it for the fourth film, but this time replace old Kirk with Kirk's father.

I can't wait for years later when we learn more about the concept of it and how it evolved over time.

if that's what happened then its hilarious to think of Paramount/Bad Robot whoever it was assuming that fans (and even the average movie audiences) would prefer to see Pine encountering Hemsworth as Kirk Snr over Shatner as Kirk Prime

That has been the case in the past I believe. Some can do both, some are just more adapt one over the the other. Kurtzman has more TV experience overall then film. Then there are the reports that Tom Cruise had a ton of control over The Mummy and how that turned out. So I wouldn't be quick to lay the blame completely on Kurtzman for how that film tuned out.

It makes far more sense from a story point of view, in my opinion.

And is my preference as well.

I love the Shat, but that ship has sailed. I can't imagine it being anything but a cringey stunt-cameo. Like Nimoy in STID. Love him, miss him, but no.

Alex Kurtzman is a hack. Nearly everything he's involved with is either completely mediocre or garbage.

He's probably one of the main reasons Discovery is a lazily written cornball show. Thanks to Kurtzman's involvement, I'll be surprised if STD has more than 3 seasons. Wouldn't be surprised if season 2 is the last.

Casual audiences are quite fond of Chris Hemsworth. Thor: Ragnarok did the kind of business Trek can only dream of.

A shame they can't go with a director that's best for the show instead of a decision that's best for the man wanting a directing career.

I think you're overrating the importance of a director to a TV show. Outside of Twin Peaks, they don't generally get new people to watch the show who otherwise wouldn't have (especially on a paid streaming platform).

Does anyone even care about Kirk's dad? It's just an excuse to get Chris Hemsworth on board for the fourth movie so it doesn't flop. I'd rather see Shatner as Old Kirk if I had to choose but I'd prefer something brand new if a fourth movie ever happens. Let Pine stand on his own without Hemsworth or Shatner. Kirk is his role now.
