USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

I have to say: The more often I see the Discoprise, the less I'm impressed with her...

On first viewing, I had an INTENSE feeling of "Yay! They modernized her without fucking her up!". Which was IMO a LOT more than could have been expected of DIS at this point.

But the more familiar I get with the Discoprise, the more... mundane it looks. Like, it's not half bad. It's servicable as a stand-in for the old lady in this modernized, dark-lit show. But it's in no way impressive or in any way memorable. It only makes the original fit a liiiitle bit better with the (horrible) starship aesthetics of DIS. But it sure as hell ain't no improvement over the original.

Like, I can entirely tolerate her as the 'original' Enterprise on this specific show, and they did a great job achieving that. But I won't ever buy a model of her for my collection or anything like that.

The TMP ship is the one it most resembles, but clumsily.

Eh? Aside from the pylons, what is there about it that is anything like the TMP design?

Fine, an original take on an existing design. The Discoprise is a mashup.

No more than the 2009 Enterprise or the 1701-C.

Yeah... I like it, but I can't say that it's one of my favourite ones. It's fine as an update of the original, and it makes it fit with the other designs (though it's still a stretch to believe that it could be refit into the TMP model), but it's not amazing. As I said earlier, curiously the 1701-A from the Kelvin universe is, conversely, growing on me quite a bit.

I think that's a bit of a stretch. To me they seem more akin to the TOS model, but updated to DSC aesthetics. I guess we'll know more soon.

the saucer has the angles of the TOS Connie.

If someone could find a really accurate CG model of the TOS Connie and render it at some of the same angles from DSC that would be helpful.

Like this shot is a pretty good angle

I hate the reduced height. And the new, back-angled nacelle pylons.
IMO the original Matt Jeffreys' proportions of the ship are the best. If you want to reimagine the Enterprise, you are allowed to change/add all details. But you should keep the original structures at the same proportions. That's also my main problem with the ST09 JJprise - which is otherwise a magnificant beast.

Halfway between the original and the new version is my favorite Trek ship ever. Wish they hadn't cluttered up the new take with the overdesigned pylons and the weird hanger bay extension.

The 2009 E changed the proportions way more than DSC did. I never hated it, it was just a little distracting at times.

Indeed - I think the 2009 Enterprise would be massively improved if she had the same proportions as Matt Jeffries original design. I love the JJprise, and I think all the details and little tweaks are fantastic. But IMO she would look waaay better if the nacelles had more width between them, and the saucer wouldn't be so ridiculously overscaled compared to the rest of the ship.

But alas, it was a clear reboot. They were allowed to make more drastic changes. I was REALLY positively surprised they didn't sweep back the nacelle pylons on the JJprise - something I loved, something they sadly later did with the Beyond-Enterprise and unnecessarily here on DIS.

The guys at Trekyards said in their Discoprise analysis video that they'd heard that the digital artists originally had straight pylons for the Enterprise but changed them to the TMP-style angled design before the digital model was complete. I wish they'd kept the straight pylons. That being said, at least they kept the three little "windows" or access ports in the pylons and in more or less the same locations they are on the TOS ship.

The Mirror Defiant appeared to have the TOS straight pylons (with a bend in the middle). Maybe it was based off an earlier design.

I was never a fan of the joint or the phaser/sensor pod added to the pylons of the MU Defiant but I do prefer the shape of the pylons to the ones we got on the Enterprise.

Sullivan saying the changes were because Mirror Universe could have been a cover because the design wasn't final.

I feel that with the Phoenix from First Contact they had decent continuity with the back end of the nacelles from TOS. They didn't really keep that going with the NX-01. Now with the Discoprise they have gone back to the TOS pilot style. They seem to be all over the place and can't decide what they really want to do.

The Conestoga from 2069 has warp nacelles whose cowls have the rectangular "light switch" shape that the Enterprise model from the original version of "The Cage(TOS)" had. No vents. No spheres. So the franchise is all over the place when it comes to what nacelles look like during the first two centuries of warp travel.
