It was almost on par with Starship Troopers.
That's an insult to Starship Troopers, which was a satire of the underappreciated and far better novel. Some of the dialogue in this episode, though, couldn't be described as satirical because they--the writers--actually took themselves too seriously and thought a normal human being would actually say something like that!

Did anyone else feel that a severely depressed man who had been through an incredible trauma should not be allowed to play with ropes and knots? Anyone? Starfleet have any psychiatrists left since Cornwell became an admiral?
...and we had prima facie evidence that she was a piss-poor psychiatrist in any case, so...

One way or another, we're getting Captain Burnham of the Discovery sooner or later. She's already got her Commander rank back. The command chair is unavoidable. She may even be ahead of Saru now, since she served as exec for 7 years.

It's going to be a LONG time before Burnham gets the itch to be a captain again, if she ever does. She's got major trust and self-confidence issues, and way too much emotional baggage to unpack. The series could well end with Saru pushing her toward the chair the way Georgiou was at the start. "Think how far our working relationship has come. If I - of all people - think you can now be a starship captain, then you definitely can be one... if you want it."

With people speculating as to casting for the crew of the Enterprise next season, does anyone have any ideas about Pike?

I'm struggling with this. I've thought of genre actors like David Boreanaz (too old now maybe), Kavan Smith (too old still?), Paul Wesley (closer to original Pike in looks but maybe too cheesy?). Greenwood is too old maybe, but also, I think they will want to steer away from any comparisons to JJverse Trek.

The only two in my mind that seem half-way decent as a recast, but not exact replica are Michael Trucco and Matt Bomer.

I think I speculated in another thread about them casting Trucco in some role in S2 - I liked him on BSG - He sees to pop up around Ted Sullivan house often for viewing parties and seems to be very pally with the other cast members...But think he has just been cast on another show or tv movie?

Thanks for the info. I think Trucco is an okay actor, but hasn't really had a break out role yet. Maybe it's time. Whoever does get cast as Pike will have to have some gravitas/charisma or acting chops. After all, we're reeling from the loss of Jason Isaacs.

I wonder if the rumor of a spin off Pike/Enterprise CBS show is true. That would make this series finale hook and potential S2 arc a kind of backdoor pilot scenario.

From "JTB", Amanda to Kirk: "You don't understand the Vulcan way, Captain. It's logical. It's a better way than ours. But it's not easy. It has kept Spock and Sarek from speaking as father and son for eighteen years."

And to Spock:
AMANDA: And you haven't come to see us in four years, either.
SPOCK: The situation between my father and myself has not changed.

OK I was concerned about the not speaking for 18years part but the actual dialogue makes it easier. They haven't had a personal conversation about things since Spock joined Starfleet. However, they have actually seen each other in the past 4 years (just kept their talk to fairly business and didn't talk about how Spock disappointed him joining Starfleet). So we are good 4 years prior and they can see each other and talk as long as they don't hash to much out.

Pike is an easy recast - Spock is not. I think Zachary Quinto is the only actor acceptable to be Spock. He had that mantle handed over to him by Nimoy and I would think most can accept him as the replacement stand in for TOS Spock. I think otherwise Spock is going to have to be in background and CGI or something. I assume replacing #1 (Majel Barrett) with new actress would be fairly acceptable as well since in this role and Pike in his role they were only in TOS once. But Spock ... its Quinto / CGI / or a lot of p***** off people.

Yea if the red alert is someone kidnapped Spock I will beat my head against table!

As long as Sarek's on the Discovery, we probably won't see Spock. They haven't seen each other for 18 years before Babel. If he doesn't leave before the Enterprise does, the show will probably conjure up a reason for Spock not being on the big E right now, I'd say with having him be on a temporary assignment somewhere else.

Spock and Pike have served together on Enterprise since 2254.

We should be in 2257 now.

Incorrect - see prior posts regarding the dialogue. They haven't spoken "as father and son" in 18 years (since Spock joined Starfleet). However they had at least seen each other 4 years prior to Journey to Babel just only spoke professionally (about nothing personal/their issues but most likely have spoken when they have seen each other).

Anson Mount from AMC's "Hell on Wheels" is my favorite for the role. Said in my other thread.

But I really don't want Pike on this series honestly. They won't justice to Pike's potential. I always found Pike more interesting than Kirk.

Thanks for the correction. I've missed the posts and I admit my memory about Babel is a bit, uhm, muddled.
