I'm glad they showed the Enterprise. I feel they have to. Or at least the Constitution Class. Hear me out.

If you're going to set a series 10 years before TOS, and you're already going out of your way to say Burnham was raised by the same parents as Spock's... you can't just avoid showing a Constitution Class ship. That feels too much like running and hiding from the decision to set the show when they set it. It would be like DS9 and VOY going out of their way to avoid showing any Galaxy Class ships. They didn't. They showed them.

And, if you're going to have Spock have a familial connection to Burnham, and you're going to show a Constitution Class Starship, why not have it be the Enterprise?

If someone hasn't seen Star Trek before, it's just another ship to them and Spock is Burnham's brother. That's all it has to be, as far as they're concerned.

Whatever anyone else takes out of it ("Oh my God! Oh no! They're showing stuff from TOS! Ewwww! Ewww! Ewww! Make it go away!"), is what they take out of it! It's what they're bringing to the show when they watch it, not what's in the show itself.

I gave this episode a 5 last night and I think that is fair. There are great things about this show. Suru, who I didnt like before, is the one character that was developed well. Lorca before the mirror universe was great. Tilly was fun.

I just wish everything else was developed better. This series feels too small in scope and character.

Again, I feel like the season peaked in the middle to end of Act 1. That was when the show was only semi-serialized, and they gave the non-Burnham characters some development (even half of the plot of certain episodes).

But as soon as we entered the MU, that was basically thrown out. All of the characters regressed to either servicing the needs of the plot, or the needs of Burnham's arc. Ash came out the best because his arc was linked with Burnham's. Saru and Stamets had nothing to do other than make the plot plot. Tilly could still do her quirky thing, but the excuses given for dragging her into every episode began to be a little absurd.

Kudos for Shazad Latif interpreation of Tyler / Voq. His klingon speaking is amazing. It's powerful especially when he says Kahless ...

I hope we will see him back.

Nice finale! Glad there was no reset button, there was a suitably Star Trek peaceful ending - if by peaceful we mean deranged Klingon threatening to blow up her own planet.

On that point, if Cornwell was going to relieve Lorca for his actions, she needs to put herself on psychiatric leave and get some PTSD treatment. Blowing up a planet just isn't cool, I don't care what the stakes are.

Burnham got reinstated - though why was her record expunged? She still fucked up. She just earned a second chance.

I screamed a little bit on that establishing shot on earth because it looked like Spacedock in orbit! I think it was the same starbase from last week though.

I was a bit saddened to hear Disco is getting a 'new captain' - surely Saru has earned that right. I wonder who it is? A Vulcan captain, or just being picked up on Vulcan?

I was genuinely surprised that Ash parted ways to join L'Rell. Interesting development, but I suspect he'll be back next year. And Empress Georgiou definitely will be.

I was convinced that distress call was going to be Prime Lorca until we saw NCC-17..

Cute cliffhanger, and a nice reward for the fans. I wonder where series 2 goes from here?

With Sarek on the Discovery and Spock on the Enterprise, they'd better not meet! Spock hadn't seen his father for 18 years in TOS.

And I never thought I'd see a hot gogo dancer in a jockstrap in a Star Trek episode, but here we are. This ain't your father's Star Trek.

I have to check the dialogue but I think Amanda told Kirk they only haven't spoken as father and son for 18 years. I guess I'll have to put on "Journey to Babel" at some point between now and next season to check. Such a chore... :D

At the very least, they definitely shouldn't be buddy-buddy. Spock should be putting on a "More Vulcan Than Vulcan" show. In front of Sarek, anyway.

You were saying...? :nyah:

First impressions before reading up.

Outstanding. One of the best episodes and true to ideals of Star Trek which is spot on and a nice way to end the season.

Anyone else notice Ash mention the Klingon city is full of “hybrids”? A reference to augments?

It felt like a set-up episode except it was supposed to be the big finale. Ended too easily, with zero tension.

The highlight was Burnham's last speech (her third in a row it felt like) being in the same hall that Kirk and Spock met in and Kirk got his medal at the end of Star Trek (2009)

Season 2. She is free, knows that Lorca found something interesting, and has knowledge about the PU's future. Should be interesting!
I took that as either Lorca had some "lowlife" outfits they could use in the Orion Quarter, or that he had some less-than-legal weaponry to barter with and other objects like the mapping drone and/or hydrobomb to execute her/their plan. She may have absconded with some other odds and ends but I think that line applied directly to what we saw them bring with them to the surface.
Those are great examples of how tame Discovery actually is when it comes to nudity.
I noticed that as well. With all the cursing and rather graphic visuals regarding Voq's transition, they definitely pulled their punches when it came to the brothel when it should have been a perfect opportunity to fully exploit the TV-MA rating. Sad...

Yeah. I was a bit surprised in MU Georgiou's post-coital scene she was almost fully clothed honestly. Not that I expected full frontal, but they could have had her nude and dealt with it via sheets and camera angles.

It's interesting that SPACE's disclaimer during the episode indicated "nudity," but I don't recall seeing any of that. There were certainly some scantily-clad people and perhaps some clever angles hiding stuff though. Maybe I'll need to look closer when I rewatch on PVR. ;)

I think she said "barely" spoke...but not sure.

She was definitely wearing a lot of clothes for someone that supposedly just finished having a threesome. LOL. I could understand that Michelle Yeoh, as a big cast member, might have stipulated no nudity in her contract but I thought the two extras would be more naked. Or maybe have one of the Orion female dancers in the background be topless? It would seem like a natural place to insert some nudity in the context of the scene.
