NFL 2017 Season

Jimmy Garoppolo gets a five-year, $137.5 million contract

Heck of a lot of money based on a five game sample. I remember Kevin Kolb getting a huge deal based on a small sample. Best of luck to the Niners and Garoppolo.

He's like Riker.

They keep pulling out the chair but he won't sit down.

Won't take command of his own ship because he'd rather hide in the shadows of a great captain.

Star Trek Reference, Bitches!!!!!

He's still better than that ass, Jellico

Problem is, he's toxic now. Yeah, he's got a good thing going for the time being - for as long as Kraft's alive. Kraft, like most of the other owners of the teams, looks like he's got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Anything can happen once he sheds the mortal coil. There is no guarantee that he'll be given top coaching position once Belichick retires/leaves. McDaniels' agent walked away, and justifiably so because he knows he can never shop him around again. McDaniels just killed his own career with this unprofessional fuckery and will wind up getting forced into early retirement before his years. People in Boston might think it's cute and good for them. The rest of the country doesn't give two rat turds in a rain-barrel what Boston thinks since Cheers went off the air.

He did sit down when he was coach in Denver, to use a Star Trek reference, he drove them into a nearby sun :D

That’s fucking crazy.

Bear in mind this is the NFL, so half the contract is funny money that Garoppolo will never, ever see. In reality it's a 3 / 90 contract.

It does mean that Cousins is going to get motherfucking paid, though (and unless Denver can get really creative with structuring, this just priced him out of their market).

It's absolutely batshit crazy that a guy who has started 7 games is now the highest paid player in the NFL. Granted, he's 7-0 in those games but holy cow!

Even 3/90 is amazing. Jimmy G must be doing the happy dance right now.

As a Raiders fan, keeping my fingers crossed on that.

It won't be as bad because of non-guaranteed money, but shaping up to be a tad like the MLB situation this offseason. In a rare circumstance, supply for decent QBs is going to outpace demand, so should be a bargain or two out there. I get the JimmyG thing, crazy money aside, but when you've got a whole handful of serviceable veteran QBs on the market, plus a decent draft class, there's about a dozen QBs looking for work. Not sure there are THAT many teams looking that also want to spend big. Going to be some disappointment out there.

Exactly, so probably no Raiders or Broncos. How does he feel about humidity? Miami could probably use him.

I'd rather keep Tannehill. Cousins doesn't impress me as a "put the team on his shoulders and carry them" kind of QB. $25-$30 million annually for the type of player he is just doesn't work for me.

I'm not entirely convinced that's true. The Broncos, Jets, Cardinals, Browns, potentially the Dolphins, almost certainly the Jaguars, possibly Tampa Bay, potentially the Ravens, and the Bills will all be in play for quarterbacks--and there's no telling what the hell is going to happen with the Vikings and their three-headed monster, or what in the world is going on with Andrew Luck--and the Giants, Saints and Steelers all have starters with much less playing time ahead of them than they do behind. (Brady won't retire until someone destroys his phylactery.)

Obviously some teams like the Giants will probably address, or attempt to address, their needs in the draft, but there's going to be quite a bit of demand for quarterbacks this offseason.

That's why I listed both of those teams as potentially looking at quarterbacks. ;)

In any event, both Koetter and Gase, by pretty much all reports, are coaching for their jobs this coming season. Tannehill appears to have a knee that is held together by duct tape and prayers at the moment, and Winston has a pretty troubling TD-INT ratio. I'm sure Gase will give Tannehill all the rope he can give, and it looks like Koetter will ride with Winston, but in the latter's case you pretty much know what you have in a guy at three years of full-time experience, and in Miami's case Cutler's done and they're going to dump Moore, so they're going to be in the market for someone who can start in the event that Tannehill goes back to being a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest.
