3D interiors in Blender

So, regarding that wall behind the biobeds... For 'Undiscovered Country', when they reused the Ent-D sickbay as the Ent-A sickbay, they added some acoustic panels to those walls in order to make them look different. Rusty wanted those panels reproduced. I think they give some much needed detail to an otherwise boring wall, and they look pretty cool in that metallic color.

I've also started working on the biobeds themselves, but they're far from finished.

Thanks @Praetor and @Bernard Guignard ! :)

@Matthew Raymond: Imagine having to find the one malfunctioning chip. ;)

@cardinal biggles: Yeah, it does now. :/ However I wanted to keep the original layout intact, I might lower the ceiling a bit at some point, but nothing further than that.

I finally took the time to finish the Enterprise-D bridge these past few days. This is the original look from Farpoint, before any modification was made. I did a ton of research into all modifications the bridge suffered, and all that went into a new article in Ex Astris Scientia that I worked on with Bernd. I hope to eventually model all the different versions of the bridge.

For this mesh, every single material was reworked in some way. I'm finally happy with how the LCARS look with their reflections (though I made the viewscreen non reflective to keep it consistent with the show), the carpets now have darker spots similar to those on the set, and the overall look is more consistent and looks more real than my previous renders.

I've rendered and uploaded a 360° panorama of the bridge, but I don't know how to embed it here, so go here to see it, along with several more renders.

After finishing this bridge, I'm already starting work on my next commission, so keep an eye out, I should be updating shortly.

You've really nailed the Farpoint look and lighting!

I guess this will always be my favorite appearance of the D's bridge. :)

Love the 360 Panorama. ;)

Have you looked at a 360° Panorama on a smartphone?

It's pretty cool. I discovered it accidentally.

@uniderth: Thanks, glad you like it! :)

@Scribble: Thank you! :) I haven't looked at panoramas on my phone, no. I guess I'll have to check it out now. :D

I've tweaked the biobeds a bit and added pillows to them. I've also started working on the rest of the set, adding all the doors.

Hey, I saw that article. Didn't realize it was you that wrote it. You did a good job. The set changes are something I've also looked into and made notes on. You did a pretty great job, noticing things I hadn't, but I had a couple comments.

The ceiling ribs at the front of the bridge change in number. They lose a pair (left and right) in the second season. It might have something to do with when they rebuilt the bridge after moving it to a different soundstage.

Also, in regards to the three center chairs in season 2. They were initially reupholstered in all leather, and then by the fourth episode, were partially reupholstered in cloth. This goes for the conn/ops chairs as well. Or at least, that's what I remember without too much digging through my research. Maybe they were too squeaky or cast members were sliding out of them. :)

The season one chair was still available when they made the season 2 chair. You can see it on the bridge of the USS Lantree in the 7th episode, Unnatural Selection.

You mentioned that the wall of the horseshoe platform was raised in the second season. Can you point out how you determined that?

You refer to the season 1 side wall panels as "wood". I've always thought they were a hard/smooth surface painted a maroon-ish color. But very recently, I've started to think they were a suede-like fabric. The second season panels were a kind of ultra-suede, but a different color, placed over padding for a pillowed effect, instead of flat/taut.

You say the plaque was stolen. Where did you hear this? It's possible this is true, but it seems oddly coincidental. The second plaque was made by the Franklin Mint and was designed with Mike Okuda. It was released sometime around the beginning of the 5th season. I'd always assumed that this was the reason for replacing the plaque when they did, not because of a theft.

You say the two-step platform from All Good Things...' future bridge was retained for Generations. I hadn't considered that before. I just went and checked my reference... you're probably right! They might be the same, with some carpeting changes. It would make sense.

Anyway, you mentioned other things I hadn't noticed or bothered to check before. Fun article!

@Lt. Washburn Thanks! Nice comments, I'll forward them to Bernd to have them added. :)

Regarding the USS Lantree chair, you're absolutely correct, I missed that! I guess the stolen rumor is false.

Regarding the bridge panels, they're definitely wood (or at least have a wood like finish), see here. The reflections are consistent with the wooden horseshoe, and shouldn't be as prominent in a fabric type material. The wood veins are more easily seen on All Good Things, given the better lighting and resolution when compared to season 1.

Regarding the Dedication Plaque, I'm not sure it was done by Franklin Mint, I can find no definite source that says that. Franklin Mint did sell a reproduction, but they started selling it on 1994, while the new dedication plaque appeared in 91. The fact that it was designed by Okuda isn't surprising, he designed all of them. Weather it was done by FM or not, that still doesn't answer why a new plaque was needed, and I read in one of the behind the scenes book that it was needed because the previous one was stolen. Still, it's anecdotal evidence at best, so I'll tell Bernd to remove the stolen bit from the article, as to not spread possible misinformation.

Regarding the raised wall behind the command chairs, see these two screenshots, they make the change very apparent. Before and After.

Every example of the plaque I've seen is dated 1992. I can see a pre-release version being used on set in the summer of '91 and then sold after the new year explaining the dates.

@Lt. Washburn: Do you have a source that says they started selling on 92? I do believe you, but I'm curious, all the sources and online collection sites and stores list the Franklin Mint reproductions as being from 1994.

Been checking the sickbay structure against some episodes to make sure everything is as correct as possible, as well as hoarding a lot more resources and images. The CMO office is particularly hard to find good references for. Meanwhile, I've worked on another project a bit.

I'll probably be alternating between the two, though on the coming days I'll be focusing on sickbay.

@Lt. Washburn: Huh, thanks for that. Yeah, it could be that they were already sold by 92. I still would love to know why they went though all the trouble of designing a new one rather than stick with the same design.

Just like with the Enterprise-D bridge style, the start of each room is pretty slow as I have to search for a ton of references to make sure it's as accurate as possible. We didn't get to see a lot of the CMO office, so getting the measurements as correct as possible took a while.

More details added to the office and started with all the furniture. I'm gonna keep the layout from the Enterprise but change a few of the details around. I plan to make the CMO's desk the same, but all the rest will be different.
