Spoilers 1x13 "Past is Prologue" Episode Clip

They should have given him Damar's closing arc IMHO. The idea that some people are just irredeemably evil isn't a Trek value at all.

I'll wait and see. I don't think this show is done with Lorca.

It may well not end as black-and-white as some seem to think...

I think CBS is misleading us with this clip. They took a very specific segment meant to look like one thing when in reality what we saw was Lorca putting on a performance for Georgio. The clip starts with a comm channel being opened and broadcast ship wide and everything we saw was just that comm channel conversation. That doesn't at all mean it is what Lorca really feels - it is what he wants Georgio to believe.

I really believe CBS is pranking us.

This is possible or they are downplaying in the clip about how evil mirror Georgiou also happens to be. I think people partially expect that she might be good in part because our Burnham trusted her in the last episode and to be more cynical because of the reasons that it might go against Political Correctness to equal a female character with a guy you might be setting up as Donald Trump. This is one thing I really hate about the current political climate. No matter what side you fall on issues people have zero trust in each other. Everyone is cynical about everything and everyone nowdays and I notice it in myself sometimes and I hate it. I feel like I use to be more trusting.

The only thing that could make this kind of fun would be if Lorca eventually reveals this all to be a gigantic ruse, explains the most obvious stuff away as he and everyone else escapes back to their own Universe, but leaves the audience and other characters completely unsure which Lorca they in fact have got. And then the fucking show just gets on with it.

Wouldn't make it great, but given that the only real feeling this show has striven for is the GoT boilerplate "OMG!" reaction at least this one wouldn't be completely telegraphed for weeks.

She ate a Kelpien and killed off her counsel with the fidget spinner from Hell. I don’t think they’re downplaying anything about Georgiou. But she still remains Discovery’s best chance to get home. So the enemy of my enemy and all that...

Nah. It's been hella fun already.

This quote kinda sums it up for me. There's stuff that makes no sense sometimes, and there's stuff that makes me roll my eyes a little...but man, I'm just having too much FUN with the show to care.

Hit or miss, they've gone balls-out on making it a roller coaster ride of fun.

You could argue, for example, that TNG was "smarter" but as much as I like TNG, it was rarely if ever "fun".

To me, DSC is just constant fun.

I think lots of people miss the fun because they're too focused on why uniforms don't look like Captain Pike or the science behind the Spore Drive or Klingons looking different. Shit, I barely even think about that stuff...I just kick back and let myself get lost in the adventure.

Klingon war causes refugees to flood the Federation for security, but class of cultures, rising crime and stretched resources in the Federation cause a rising of tensions and even poverty reappears in places. To further complicate issues, a "Terra Prime" style group appears and starts spreading xenophobia against the refugees and refugees start to become the victims of violence.
Attempts to shut down the group are met with "It's free speech!" even though their speech is leading to violence, bigotry and is actually having a silencing effect on the alien races that make up the refugees.

None of this is subtle at all. We all know exactly what this is referencing. But this is how Trek written by proper Star Trek writers probably would have set up to tackle the "Trump/Alt-Right" era. The problem with Lorca and the Klingons isn't that they're trying to tackle social issues, it's that they're doing it so clumsily and in such a 2 dimensional, paper thin way.

The way Discovery is also handling this subject, doesn't actually deal with the situation that led to Trump and events like Brexit in the real world. Massive inequality, rising poverty and throw on top of that, the tensions of the Refugee crisis and forces have made refugees and poverty stricken non-white people a very convenient scapegoat.
Discovery isn't dealing with any of that though. It's doing it in the most smug Liberal way of assuming that everyone who didn't vote for KWEEEEEEN Clinton is some evil mostauche twirling villain.
This is the second time as well, first with the Klingons, now with Lorca.

I've liked the show as well but it's hard to deny a good chunk of that was because of Lorca. I wouldn't say he has carried the show on his own because I also really enjoy Stamets,Tilly and Saru and even find Burnham and Tyler to be okay. Lorca does feel though like he has been the heart of the show. They guy kind of Rodney McKayed the show away from Burnham but instead of going with what works they are possibly trying to kill it in a character ruining moment we haven't seen on tv since the time Felicity got a haircut.

I think part of it is that when they conceived the character they didn't factor in how much Trump fatigue people might still have. No excuse though for any "Make America Great" puns because that joke has been done to death. I also think they were counting on Burnham to also be a breakout star character so when Lorca is gone you still got a strong lead people will be compelled to see. Which when you think about is kind of a flawed idea as well. Imagine "TOS" taking away Spock after season 1. Sure everyone loves Kirk as the lead and McCoy but you just lost Spock!

You have to understand from their perspective he was not quite Rudolf Hoss but rather Eichmann or Heydrich, a governor who instituted fascist and genocidal policies. He never did not stop being complicated or charismatic, not even when playing Bajoran religion - but they made sure you were aware he was someone who self-justified his evil acts as necessary or important, and made sure you could see why he was indeed the jackbooted face of horrifying oppression during the Occupation. You have to remember that, and for a while the show didn't - hence making sure. They never 'destroyed' his character, they showed a man who made bad choices but believed he was the hero. Showpieces like 'Waltz', which really share the DNA of earlier seasons, conveyed that well.
