Spoilers 1x13 "Past is Prologue" Episode Clip

Make the Empire glorious again.

Ladies and gentlemen, say 'good bye' to Lorca. He is 100 percent dead meat. You just can't say those words today on TV and remain alive and well.

Sleep well, sweet prince.

Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts aren't shy about their political agenda with this show..... but do we really need Evil Lorca saying his own version of the Trump slogan? That's like CW Supergirl levels of forced left-wing propaganda.
Or you know...Star Trek.

Or you know...Star Trek.

Good Star Trek should aim to be more intelligent and subtle with it's political commentary than that.

But then again, this kind of dialogue is par for the course with STD. Gretchen J Berg and Aaron Harbarts have their axe to grind, and they aren't shy about it.

Whatever happens to Lorca or whether he gets even more cemented as a Trump proxy, I put the blame solely on these two;

Well that clip is about as subtle as a punch in the face. Did we need a TWO Evil Trumps in a season? The Klingons also were the alt right. I mean Trump is a horrible person and I think the worst president in American history yet he has also in fiction become a one note cliche at this point. Can't we have any baddies anymore that have some other motivation other than making something great again?

I also guess that mirror Georgiou is either a stand in for Hillary Clinton unless they are getting really racist and making her be a stand in for Kim Jong Uh. I just hope when Harvey Weinstein becomes the baddie in season 2 they are able to beat all other shows to the punch so they aren't left feeling like the 6th or 7th show to go down that angle.

I now plead to Congress or Robert Mueller to please hurry up and send Trump to prison where he belongs so Hollywood can make baddies great again. I'm sick of real Trump and fictional Trumps at this point.

Looks like a great ep.

Did anyone else notice the blue/green-ish alien in Georgiou’s throne room? So she does allow non-Terrans to serve in the Imperial Starfleet, and Lorca’s the one who’s opposed to it.

So much for Lorca being a reformer...

Star Trek has been left wing since the 60s, when TOS had episodes that engaged in social criticism of the Vietnam war.

Star Trek has engaged in social commentary on contemporary events since the 60s, it was unlikely the Trump era would not have subject to it.

Oh wait, that might just be a bald guy. Damn MU bad lighting...

When making commentary about Trump and his cult light followers, subtly is not needed as there is nothing subtle about the evil that man represents. And what he represents: bigotry, homophobia, sexist and white supremacy are anathema to everything the Federation and this series stands for.

I'm not sure the issue is it being left wing so much as being a little to on the nose in this case. Granted this isn't the first time Trek has been like this. All you got to do is look at the half white/half black painted aliens to know that. Use to though you had a bigger range of issues within a season. Also like I mentioned above everyone is basically going with the same theme. In the past it felt like Trek was the only show really commenting on things. Now it's just another voice in the chorus. Which means you would hope that shows would try and find a new take at exploring the issue that feels more unique than what other shows will be doing. Problem though is some shows relay to much on the sterotypes and catchphrases and forget the characters or finding something new to say. Compare this to something like "South Park" and you can see one show is doing a little better job on the commenting than the other.

Well Star Trek is drama and South Park is comedy, the rules are different for both. There is also far more media out there engages in social commentary then the past, but even with that in mind, back in the 60s Star Trek went after the Vietnam War and several fictional works did the same thing. Its bit silly to expect Star Trek to not cover the big issue of the day.

That's never happened. Star Trek is a blunt instrument and always has been.

Only to blunt individuals who may see it as such. Trek, while sometimes failing at it, has shown the ability to produce intelligent and subtle social commentary done in an allegorical way if the writing is strong.

STD is nowhere near that level. They have literally taken the most pedestrian route possible with 'Evil Lorca' and what he represents. Just wait and see.

Shame to see Lorca being reduced to a cliche Bond villain. I'm guessing Mirror Michael died and Lorca wanted to come to the Prime Universe to get a replacement Michael to be his queen.

That's true to some extent but then again "Discovery" has been sold as the more edgy, adult version of Trek so that sort of comes with some expectations that it's going to raise the bar on how it does things. As for racism not being subtle. Of course it is. No matter how bad a person is they are still a human beings which means they are driven by basically the same things everyone else is. The interesting point is finding out why they become the way they are. I mean Trump himself is a really interesting person if you look at him almost like a zoo animal. How does someone become someone like that. Is it daddy issues or mommy issues or mental illness or mix of all these things. Greed or not being well liked when he was young. Why do people follow someone who is clearly lying to them and doesn't care about them.

Subtle isn't really in Star Trek's wheel house. Intelligent.....on occasion. It's allegories are usually so obvious a child could parse them.

I agree that it should be commented I just wish they had something to say that I didn't already know. Trump is evil and the alt right are terrible. I have known this for awhile. I mean who hasn't known this? Perhaps they should have made it clear early on he is Trump and then find ways to make you still care about him. That or go Walter White on us and make him a ordinary man who seems friendly on the outside but has emotional issues because of childhood trama from living in the mirror universe. He slowly becomes darker and darker as the season pasts and the reasons he came to the regular universe was to escape that trama but he finds himself pulled back into because he in te end isn't able to get away from the pain inside, himself. Maybe he is jealous because the regular Burnham doesn't care about him or the Klingon war gets his violent juices going that he was trying to get away from.

Well we ultimately do not know his fate yet, maybe Lorca will redeem himself by sacrificing himself by the end of the season or maybe he will just a evil villain.

I think to make the stakes the highest there will be a unsympathetic villain who wants to invade the Prime Universe or will destroy the Mycelial network, who will be the final threat of the season, the villain you really root against. Its a toss up whether that villain will be Lorca or Georgiou, IMO.

Agreed. If I want to get commentary on current events, I log into Twitter.

However, I'm going to wait and see what the writers actually do with this arc. The preview may be different from the actual story line. That has been so before.

That's possible but it doesn't look so good in the clip. I know it's rare for Trek fans to jump to conclusions with just a little bit of info but I can see why they might be doing it this time.
