The only reason to give her a field promotion is that the bridge crew are ciphers except Saru. Dramatic purposes only.

I honestly find it hard to believe Burnham was in the running for a captaincy, unless it was a science vessel. Someone that stiff is not used to commanding other people.

Saru is going to be the captain if Lorca is gone. Chain of command.

Has anything changed to excuse Burnham for mutiny? Nothing has. She attacked her Captain etc. She could do a zillion good deeds there after (and she hasn't) and her crime remains. She should be in prison serving her sentence. As soon as this crapola in the mirror universe is over, send the twit back to the mines to do her sentence.

She's been sleeping with a Klingon for weeks. Who knows what diseases he's carrying. She may already be #STDcaptain

When I want it to happen is irrelevant. Discovery will make it happen as quickly as possible because this show has the attention span of a pint of yak butter. It will then proceed to move on to the next fever dream. That is both a great and terrible quality.

You mean I don't have to mention Spock becoming Captain even though he has a long history of insubordination and physical attacks on his commander?

Clearly those cases were different and don't affect Discovery since that was after the fact. Spock also did more good things.

I suppose the real question, is exactly what happens to give her back a rank?

commutation of sentence by a tribunal of bigwigs for her actions aboard Discovery, I'm guessing.
When it comes down to it, Starfleet Admiralty allowed an infiltrator (who was sleeping with a member of said Admiralty) to take over one of their ships, kill prisoners and a guard AND coerce the remaining prisoner to work for him. She probably has a lawsuit in there somewhere. Commute her sentence and give her a badge back.

Admiralty board can, but for what reason? Cannot just say we made the incorrect verdict.

of course they can...and would be right. she was sentenced for mutiny, which she clearly hadn't commited. that was a BS sentence in the first place

Sentences get commuted. My great grandfather got life for killing a couple of guys, one of them his best friend in a squabble. Back then in this state that meant work in the mines till you died. Family had to pitch in, sell his murkier business interests and make a donation to the governor's campaign. His pardon came in later in the the year. I'm not saying it would be anything that obvious but no doubt they'll find a way.

    "killing a couple of guys"

That must have been one helluva "squabble."
