Every Empire in history has always had some more equal than others, even if they aren’t quite the same as those at the very top. There were some very well off Indians indeed under the British Raj, and Brits and Indians below them...the ones at the top care about how far up the ladder they are as individuals, not whole groups. A Terran Empire is one with Earth ruling and at its centre, not one made up of just the human species, and in terms of maintaining order, it doesn’t work if you literally enslave everyone else. See also the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and intendant Kira.
Egypt, Rome, heck, probably right back to city states like Ur, it never works if you subjugate everyone utterly. Rome had soldiers from the same races it enslaved, and vassal states are vassal states...often with an imperative to somehow ‘uplift’ what is seen as ‘savages’ like with Constantine evangelising to Anglo Saxon Britain even while having a few knocking about as slaves. As we also see in the MU, eventually the oppressed become the opressors unless another way is found.

Episode? Spin-off!

You're not getting it, aren't you?
It's not about not being able to follow the bare bones of the structure. It's about being able to get the full experience by simply watching it. It's the same with ST09: "Oh, Nero's motivation makes no sense? Well, it's explained in the comic book, you need to read THAT first!". Sorry. I'm not doing that. If your character motivations are shit, and I need to research and buy external material to make sense of them for the thing I'm watching in the first place - yeah, I'm not going to buy that but will complain your character motivations are shit.

Same rules for DIS. Nobody will not get what has happened this episode. It will just come across as really stupid If you're unfamiliar with these specific old episodes.
Nero's motivation makes perfect sense. nero saw the destruction of Romulus and lost his family. Spock (in the film) specifically says "I promised to save the planet Romulus...I failed..."
^^^
Nero's motivation (and his insanity) make perfect sense (especially when you consider he waited 25 years for Spock to appear which is also made clear in the film itself) JUST by watching the film.

I don't get your idea that things will appear 'stupid' if someone viewing hasn't read/seen any/all previous related material - as some viewers may read/view everything and STILL think it's stupid (be they a Star Trek fan or not.)

Do we have any idea where the real ISS Discovery is? Did they say it switched places with them?

I think it would be very beneficial to watch certain episodes before or after this one. Maybe not "Mirror, Mirror," but "The Tholian Web," and especially, "In a Mirror Darkly."

In a Mirror Darkly is the only one that takes place from the other side, and gives a detailed picture of the Terran Empire, command structure, the enslaved Vulcans, Andorians, etc, and their rebellion against the Terrans.

It's pretty impressive how in depth the two parter actually is for such an over the top universe.

Especially when you have groups who admit to gaming the system to try and prove a point like in the case of the recent Star Wars. It’s far from representative of the actual audience.

Exactly, it seems like people who really hate the show feel the need to post negative reviews on RT because they're so angry. I personally love the show, but don't feel the need to post a bunch of positive reviews there, and I'm sure many others don't either. I support the show by continuing my subscription.

A question: The bridge of the Shenzhou was recreated for its mirror counterpart in this episode. Did they have to rebuild that set from scratch? Or was it always sitting around ready to use if needed?

Or, even, is the same bridge set used for both the Shenzhou and Discovery, just changed around as needed?

Some people love to complain, just to be heard. Their lives are fairly empty and meaningless otherwise, sadly.

Yes the Shenzhou bridge and the Discovery bridge are one and the same, just redressed.
