Best Series

Man--- as simple as it always sounds, this is never an easy question. Star Trek is my favorite franchise. There's no television or movie franchise that even comes close. So...for me to do this isn't very easy.

TOS- This is the original, and the template that everything that came after was based upon. It not only is my favorite Star Trek series, it is far-and-away my favorite television series of all time (and may objectively be the BEST television series of all time).

As for the rest...

I love TNG for many reasons. It's like a warm blanket. Patrick Stewart is the best actor that the franchise has ever had. Although unrealistic and somewhat undramatic as a result, it is a wonderful "aspirational" viewpoint on where spacefaring humanity could be one day. This show set the tone for everything else that followed.

DS9 is probably my second-favorite series because I love the characters and richness of the story once it became an arc. Characters have always been my #1 draw with Star Trek, and this is what DS9 (after TOS) did best. All of the characters are compelling, interesting and dynamic. They don't need to be "likable" to be engaging...and DS9's characters are all engaging.

VOY is my least-favorite series, but there's a lot to love there. I really enjoy the "pioneering" aspect that admittedly was hit-or-miss with this series (but when it hit it was very good). I also like how the relationships formed on this show. Some of the romantic notes fell awkwardly flat, but the friendships / mentorships that developed were great. Also, very nice production design and music.

ENT is a series that was my least-favorite, until I recently did a re-watch. Given the benefit of a more distant separation from the rest of the franchise (meaning, judging it NOW as opposed to judging it back in 2001), this is a pretty entertaining little series, and I have now elevated it above VOY. It is definitely hit-or-miss, but I find some of the chemistry to be very fun, and the story arcs can be engaging. Unlike most, I find Archer to be a good character because he's not the same Picard / Janeway / Sisko 24th Century mold. He's very much finding his way...and I think that's far more entertaining than someone hitting every ball out of the park.

DSC has been very good thus far, and probably comes in third after TOS and DS9...but it's still far too early to judge. What I can say (and have said repeatedly) is that it is certainly head-and-shoulders above the 4 spin-off series in terms of relative quality and entertainment value through the first 9-10 episodes. I really struggled with DS9 and VOY through the first half of their first seasons. TNG was hit-or-miss...but I was in 7th grade so was far more forgiving. DSC has grabbed me from the get-go, despite it not being perfect. Time will tell. If it grows and develops like the other series did...it could be very special. As a fan of the franchise, I sincerely hope so and will continue to support it as it grows and matures.

So...if forced to do it:

TOS
DS9
DSC (* early to tell)
TNG
ENT
VOY

Wow, switch VOY and ENT and that's the exact order I'd go with.

And, admittedly, that's how I had it for many many years until I did a recent re-watch of ENT (just this past spring). Looking at it with fresh eyes...I found a new appreciation for it.

Discovery is shit.

Gotta go with TOS as #1 and TNG as #1a. I grew up watching TOS in syndication in the 70s. Can't beat it. Only saw a few episodes of the animated series. Defintiely need to check those out TNG is close to TOS, very very close.

Oddly, I pretty much lost interest after that. Started with Voyager and DS9 got bored and left. Came back briefly to VOY when Jeri Ryan joined but soon lost interest again. Never went back to DS9. I do want to watch DS9 from beginning to end some day though. Recently did that with VOY and enjoyed it mostly but wasn't blown away. Started with ENT, got bored and left never to return. Refuse to subscribe to CBS All Access for one show. They can suck it

For me it's between TNG and DS9, I'd give slight edge to TNG. TOS a close third.

Discovery I'd place as a distant fourth. I like Voyager, but it's just so god damned safe, other than being in the delta quadrant it's basically TNG with a weaker cast. Discovery at least is doing its own thing. And Ent, season 4 isn't enough to make up for the utter garbage of the first two seasons.

If season 4 were the only season it would be an easy #4.

Why?

If it's possible to point to certain characters, individual episodes (example Plato's Stepchildren), entire seasons, or a Star trek movie as "shit," why not be able to do the same with a particular series?

My favorite series is TOS, purely for personal subjective reasons.

I think it's too early to place 'Discovery' on these lists, it has only taken its first steps and others have years worth of episodes.

BTW, Finnish TV hasn't shown any episodes of the new series... yet?
All I can say about this new series is that the Klingon new look is a dumb idea.

Why?

1. It's irrelevant to this topic. The topic isn't "what series is shit". It's "what series is the best". The DSC comment was completely and utterly unnecessary.

2. When any one individual feels the need to take a dig at a series or movie or character in nearly every post they make, regardless of topic or sub forum, it's time to move on. Let it gooooo, let it go!

3. Nobody cares. It's an unarguable and narrow statement that doesn't invite debate or retort of any kind. So it's just threre to draw ire essentially.

4. It's unhealthy and unproductive, IMHO, to spend that much energy on something you can't stand. It's even less productive to attempt to draw conflict from a community of people who largely disagree.

That's why.

I agree with you. Yet, at the same time, I want to include it because it'll be interesting to see how it'll go up and down or stay the same. So, in series rankings I'd use the qualifier "It's too early to tell, but as of right now..."

I will leave it out of any season-rankings, though. I think there will be a ton of twists in the rest of the season. The way Discovery looks like it'll work, it's hard to tell how a season is until it's over.

All I can say about this new series is that the Klingon new look is a dumb idea.

Yeah. I can live with it but it's the one thing about the show I don't like.

It makes you wonder. If the Discovery time-traveled into the 24th Century and ran into the Enterprise-D, what would Worf look like?

1) ENT
2) TOS
3) DS9
4) TNG
6) VOY
[7) DSC]

I love "Enterprise", it's my favorite Star Trek series since 2001 and so the sole lead. I tend to team up TOS and TAS in such rankings. TAS alone is a bit hard zu compate to all the other live action series. DS9 on third place is quiet close to TOS. TNG and VOY are close too. Ranking DSC on 7 should not be overrated. For me the new series is quiet strange. I am not able to put the series into context and I don't see what it aims for. But that can definity change with more episodes.

Good point.
We might need a series poll for ongoing series, but it would be a short list, Discovery is first but also last. :)

Michael Dorn might know..?

Maybe in about 30 years we'll get a foreheadbump explanation like was done with Klingons of TOS and later series in Enterprise.

I watched TOS in syndication in the late 70s/early 80s as a kid. Was there for TNG starting up again and engaged for the DS9 & VOY premiers, but then faded out. Missed a lot of those episodes. Ditto with ENT.

As Discovery news broke, I had tIme to rewatch all of TOS & TNG. Recently finished DS9 & am in Voyager's last & Entetprise's first.

If you would have asked my before the rewatch, I would have gone:
1) TNG
2) TOS
----------gap-------
3) Voyager
4) DS9
----------gap
5) Enterprise

However, after the rewatch, I realized a couple things.

First, after being pretty bad early, DS9 got pretty good later and really built up well to conclusions as latter season storylines went along. I realized I hadn't seen or didn't remember a lot of those episodes (Sisko lying to get the Romulan's into the war was classic). The ending was a tad to pat at the end, but it finished strong after a weak start.

Voyager is kind of the opposite. Good start that peaked in the first Jerry Ryan season. Went downhill from there though there were some nice moments later (Critical Care seeming prescient nowdays).

I feel I cannot rate Enterprise yet, though season 1 is much better than I remember.

Now:
1) TNG (3-6 all excellent, 7 good)
2) TOS (1-2 excellent)
3) DS9 (4-6 excellent)
-------gap
4) Voyager (4 excellent, 1 good)
5) Enterprise (incomplete, 1 is good).

Seasons that were NOT good:
TOS 3; TNG 1-2; DS9 1-3; VOY 5-7.
