Showing that Lorca was mapping out alternate timeline access points was obviously a "Checkhov's gun", but it's also a good scene to remind that Starfleet captains have gone through the same rigorous science training that others have. He may have even had a silver uniform way back when, just like Saru had.

Prepare for disappointment, because I'd bet my wee bairns that Section 31 will come into this show somehow.

What little we've seen of Sec 31 (not counting Kelvinverse) is that there style works in sneaky ways like biological warfare, the disease that nearly killed all the Changelings, the Augment Virus, etc, which makes sense considering their numbers are few. They have no ships, maybe no facilities of any kind. If Klingon's developed the spore drive first, Sec31 would just poison the mycellium network and wipe it out.

Now introducing a fluffy little overbreeding animal modified to wipe out Klingon food supplies, that would be Section 31, worthy.

TOS Klingons weren't really any stronger than humans (aka Tribble bar fight a large scale example).

Also Burnham wasn't fighting to win, but to buy time. Of course they stretched the 9 minutes (4 for the data collection and 5 for the algorithm processing) like crazy, but ah well, it's TV.

First episode my wife watched with me, and now she's interested to find out what happens next. This episode was a win for me :).

Sometimes, sci-fi writers have good one off ideas that tell an interesting story. But we can never just leave well alone. There's always got to be a sequel. Doctor who is bad at that (weeping angels...) and so is Trek. Like the mirror universe, or Risa, or Q, they just can't stop going back to that well.

Risa wasn't ever good though, even in the first episode it was introduced. Every episode it touched was either boring or absolute rubbish.

Honestly, it probably could be done well by Discovery now. The whole problem is it was a planet all about...fuckin basically...and since Trek was family-friendly TV, they could never actually be explicit about it.

Nothing to do with Starnett bad condition. If you re-run you see at the moment he (probably a Section 31 agent orderd by Lorca) put in the coordinates it stated : "Override -Lorca, G." and "Spore-Jump 133--Unknown" So at that stage you easely could abort or intervien. It is al done by purpose. Lorca probably knows much more about alternative time lines, multi dimensional realities etc etc we are aware of. Lorca also new Starnett would resign that was not in Lorca's/Section31 plan i guess so he had to improvise to keep Starnett in. Ha ha screwd-up Section31 agents who will do everything to reach limits and byond i love it. We are living in a hidious world thats what STD reflects. Screen writers that keeps us reminding about reality keep on rocking.

I meant that Lorca changed the last jump coordinates, but something went wrong because ofStarnett bad condition or something else, and they went somewherelse.
Lorca seemed genuinely surprised at the and of the last jump.

Exactly, that was a classic "I'll just walk home it's not far and it's not raining that hard" combined with puppy dog eyes that say "lift please".

The part that Lorca wasn't expecting was Stamets saying it was his last jump. That shortened his timescale to act.

Agreed. Exactly this.

Then why did Lorca say “we’re going home”. Supposedly they were heading for a Federation starbase. The Starbase (46?) ain’t anyone’s home.

I was actually surprised to revisit "Captain's Holiday" recently and like it! All subsequent visits to Risa were so catastrophically bad, I forgot the first time there had some charm (to me, anyway).

So true. Oh god. I'm now hoping for another Risa episode, aren't I?

God really? As though that story weren't stupid or fanwanky enough.
If only DS9 had just gone with their original idea for the "Trials and Tribble-ations" anniversary story of having Worf simply appear in TOS Klingon makeup for the 23rd century scenes without comment—the reverse of what they'd done with Kor/Kang/Koloth earlier in "Blood Oath"—instead of directly acknowledging the "issue" (albeit jokingly) and thus creating a perceived dramatic imperative to further explore the matter in-universe! Alas...

I liked the Augment Virus storyline in Ent, though as people keep revisiting Klingons, it keeps getting more convoluted, all based on one funny line. I don't think they are going to explain why Klingons are now more reptilian than mammal (except for breasts), viper pits in the back of their head, hairless, etc. I wish they WOULD at this point as Fuller-Klingons dont make a lot of sense to me. Klingons are really my only complaint about the show and I'll be glad after this season if they are shut of them.

Promo for Risa episode after their return to the regular universe:

Lorca: "Okay, with the Klingons in retreat and now back from our sojourn out of the universe, Starfleet has ordered us all to shore leave on.. ugh... Risa."

---

Burnham: "Risa is a peaceful planet. We need to insure their safety in case of Klingon attack."

Tyler: "C'mon, Michael, loosen up for once. You can afford to act like us humans. Here, let me rub some more lotion on your back."

Burnham: (raises eyebrow)

----

Saru: "Captain, I am resigning from Starfleet. I have felt things with the Risians I have never thought possible."

Lorca (to another officer): "Take away his damn statue."

You are right after jump 132 or so that his condtion was bad. But not later he was fine. My guess is he prepared him self to jump to the starbase. But when he received the alternative (false) coordinates he screamd knowing what was happening. And Lorca played he was supprised NOT. What ever we see what our speculations are worth some where in Januari.

God, the timeline on this is really a mess when I think about it. We know the Starbase is three hours away at warp. After the 133 jumps, Stamets looks ravaged in a way that seems like it would take weeks/months to recover from, even with Trek science. But then we just see him in the shuttle bay with Lorca looking the picture of health. And this must be, what, less than an hour later? And they need to do this one more jump to save 2 hours or 90 minutes or so?

It just does not track! So much of what's wrong with this episode could be fixed by just changing the Starbase being "three hours away" to "18 hours away, through a dangerous region of space..." Some actual stakes to motivate this final jump!

All the descending Klingons provided the stakes - the jump prevented another battle, as well as getting the crew back to safety straight away. I totally see Stamets doing that. Especially as he plans to bug out when he gets there. He is 1000% done with Starfleet at that point.

What I would have liked, incidentally, is a bit more effect on Stamets of seeing what he'd seen. Physical side effects aside, he seemed to be pretty chill about seeing all of time and space
