I dont understand why people are complaining about Stamets offer of one more jump. He has a great motivation to jump to safety, and one worth the risk of his life.

Not only the risk of incoming Klingon ships getting the ship, its drive, and general concern for crew, he also has someone he loves. That can be an extremely powerful morivator .

Even with the risk to ship, crew, and tech that could harm the Federation for myself personal love be it towards parent, child or lover would be a bigger factor.

Plus, Lorca offering to use warp drive instead of the spore drive would have sounded pretty suspect if Stamets did not offer to do the jump, and Lorca had to go "well, actually, on second thought, could you jump just one more time"? I don't think Lorca would have counted on Stamets to volunteer if he was determined to use the spore drive one more time.

Very true. The eventual “Tyler is Voq” reveal has the potential to undermine the whole graveness of the PTSD storyline.

Not necessarily. I don't think Tyler knows that he is Voq. I think he genuinely thinks that he is a human named Ash Tyler. I think seeing the breakdown of Tyler finding out who he really is, will add a whole new level of trauma.

He disobeyed that Admiral's direct order, risking his ship and potentially the war on a hail mary pass. Lorca is due for a promotion to desk duty in the basement of the Presidio.

And, by sheer coincidence I'm sure, he's out of Admiral Terrel's hair, so to speak, for awhile.

I’m amazed at all the 10s. Not just this episode, but all along.
I’ll save my 10s for The Corbomite Maneuver, Devil in the Dark, City on the Edge of Forever, Yesterday’s Enterprise, The Best of Both Worlds (part 1) or The Inner Light. I’m enjoying the ride Discover is giving us, but nothing has been to that level yet and deserving of a 10 in my opinion (your mileage may vary).

But that's nonsensical. He can't just run away from Starfleet with a crew of 200 forever. The war is not over (they made a point of mentioning this). His primary driver is winning the war. He's smarter than that. Jumping Discovery away wouldn't solve his issue. He's not obsessed with literally just remaining in command of the ship. If the ship is on the run from Starfleet, that defeats his true, ultimate purpose of redeeming himself by being instrumental with winning the war.

I don't agree with this idea that he's so broken that he'll do anything to avoid judgement...I just don't. If you break it down...it makes no sense.

I think his meeting with Cornwell several episodes ago really woke him up to his own issues like a punch in the face. He's been working hard to turn it around at this point. Yes, he is concerned with losing his command...but stealing the ship and holding off 200 trained loyal officers currently under his command while he mutinies against the Admiralty just doesn't make sense and isn't within his overall goals.

I think there's a lot of people trying to make something of an issue that isn't there. Our preconceptions are getting in our way.

I dunno...maybe I'm wrong. But I really don't see it at this juncture.

The more I think about it, the less inclined I am to believe that Lorca willingly tried to sabotage the jump. I mean, he was just as freaked out as everyone else when Discovery arrived, whereever it is.

It's easy to think that he had sinister machinations due to Jason Issacs does an amazing job imbuing fairly neutral dialog with a sense of menace. As a result, no one knows where they stand with Lorca, including the audience.

Yeah I've been saving my 10 score for that level episode. This was a BOBW Part Two, or a Call to Arms, a solid 9. But there's room to go up if we get a classic.

Discovery was great- I'm agreeing with that theory that Tyler is Voq, I guess they've landed either in the Mirror Universe or a differenttime zone - and I wonder if Stamets is about to go all Gary Mitchell on us....
Don't get me started on the Burnham/Kol knife-fight. Clearly neither of them are any good at it.

I use the TNG scale: a 10 would be an infinitely good episode, impossible to achieve. The best we could hope for is a high 9.999... or so.

I'm with you guys, 9 is normaly the highest I would give an absolutely fantastic episode, 10 is reserved for those episodes that most shows have maybe 2-4 ones over their whole lifespan. But everyone has their own head-rating system inside their head-canon inside their head-...

I try to grade on a curve. No episode is perfect, but some knock it out of the park so well that their flaws don't matter or are part of the experience.
Some 10 scores for me...
The Corbomite Manoeuvre, Devil in the Dark, COTEOF, Best of Both Worlds 1, the Inner Light, I, Borg, Darmok, Duet, The Visitor, In the Pale Moonlight. There are more, but not many more.
Discovery hasn't produced a 10 score yet, but this was a solid 9, a Way of the Warrior or a Homefront.
To get a ten, Discovery needs to take a breath and execute something simple but effective that is a bit more reflective or meaningful.

It certainly needs to be calibrated as time goes by...but regardless of the lack of objectivity in some cases what you're seeing is still a very positive thing: a large number of fans reacting strongly to something they consider to be very good / excellent in a franchise we all care about.
