is Star Trek (1)4 happening?

Or maybe Chris “Thor Ragnarok” Hemsworth, Chris “Wonder Woman” Pine and Zoe “Guardians Galaxy” Saldana will demand a gazillion dollars each and that will sink the project faster than a granite rock.

forgot Pine is now Wonder (Wo)man (also Urban in Thor 3) so that too could be added appeal for general audiences to see Trek as WW was so huge and almost like a cultural event movie.. its probably occurring to Paramount a Pine/Hemsworth ST4 is maybe worth a shot now (just keep budget in the 150m range max or even less..maybe they could even make use of some STD sets/props like the way STV/VI used TNG)

and pretty sure there was a story a while ago that Pine and Quinto are already signed up for 4

Made me wonder, would people (want to) see a totally original, standalone Trek movie, one that had no ties to a pre-existing TV series? Could we start to see Trek 'anthology' films along the lines of the standalone Star Wars films?

I just don't know that there's enough of an audience for such a film.

Previous ones at least had a hook of coming off a successful TV series or being a big-budget re-imagining of the most iconic series with a star director and cast - and even then they haven't exactly been huge hits.

The "Star Trek" in the title is at least as much a curse as a blessing when it comes to attracting a wider audience. Without a big hook, I'd be worried that a standalone film would sink without a trace.

don't include Zoe in the ones demanding because it's not realistic. Hollywood is hollywood and you should know that actresses are by default payed less.
Case in point, for star trek beyond Karl Urban blackmailed them he wouldn't come back if they didn't give him more.. and as a result, he replaced Zoe as the third top billed in spite of her not only being the original third lead of this trek, but she's much more famous than him and quite possibly the only almost a list actor they have after Pine. AND it's her image that is used the most in international posters, not Karl's.
I bet for a forth movie the story would repeat and Karl would demand more than her, again.

That's another aspect that, for me, made beyond a movie that had the pretense to be "progressive" "inclusive" "modern" and "trek", but it actually was all disguised behind the most safe and conservative, and backwards, movie of this trilogy where it really counts.

Anyway, paramount is well known for wasting millions over some stuff and then being too cheap with the actors and promotion. From that perspective, what they give to their stars is a very small part of the budget and not the main issue.

Today John Campea talked about Star Trek 4 on his YouTube show, saying he hadn't heard it had been cancelled and still expected it to begin production at some point in the future. He was also excited about the prospect of Chris Hemsworth returning as daddy Kirk. I get the feeling they're still figuring out a script. Beyond still only came out last year

Scott Mantz also said back in the summer that he was told by people at Paramount that Star Trek 4 was still going forward. My hunch is that with all the chaos at Paramount and Beyond's under performing box office, Trek has moved to the back burner somewhat. I know the Kelvin cast signed deals to do a forth film as well as Chris Hemsworth, but the question is how long are those contracts valid for? I'm guessing 3 to 4 years? Paramount has released it's film schedule up until summer 2019 which makes me suspect Trek in 2020?

I remember Simon Pegg teased on twitter that he and Doug Jung weer working on a script but never heard anything official since.

Didn't Scott Mantz say that in Dec 2016? Simon Pegg and Doug Jung's tweets was also from Dec 2016.

Looking at this, Paramount has yet to put any major movies down for 2020

Paramount only just announced it's slate for Summer 2019 a few weeks back and nothing beyond that. Skydance which co-produced Into Darkness and Beyond with Paramount and Bad Robot has a number of big films coming out with Paramount between now and 2019 which could be another reason why we haven't heard much about another Trek film. My gut says the next film will be in 2020.

Well from what we know at the moment, Pine, Hemsworth, Quinto, Saldana, Urban, Cho and Pegg are all signed on to do another one should Paramount opt to make a fourth film while their contracts are still valid. This means that until their contracts expire, their salaries are locked in and they cannot renegotiate. Although Paramount could opt out of some or all of their contracts if they decide to save money and not use all or certain characters. If they signed their deals in 2016 as reported, it's likely they will be effective until around 2020 give or take a year. The two major reasons that Beyond budget was higher than originally wanted was because of pre-production costs associated with the original script that was thrown away, and because the cast's original contracts expired before the film could be shot and they all renegotiated higher wages.

In reality, Saldana is now the biggest name in the bunch as she has been in the most financially successful franchise films compared to the rest of the cast. One would think she could demand more money but Hollywood being Hollywood would likey offer her less than her male co-stars. Pine's career has never really taken off as a leading man type as most of the films he's lead outside of Trek have been box office bombs, he's still a major name but he's career seems to be moving towards more work in ensemble pieces rather than leading man. Hemsworth is the same, outside of Thor other films he's lead have failed to do good box office. Also younger stars in Hollywood no longer can command the salaries that stars were able to 10 to 20 years ago. Gone are the days when a star could command 10 to 15 million a picture, Pine and Hemsworth are only banking about 4 or 5 million a picture.

It feels ages away but it’s only 3 years
Just think we'll all be sat down watching "Star Trek ..........." Pine sharing the screen with Hemsworth in some reality altering time travel adventure as they battle.. Klingons? Nero?

I don't think there will be a Star Trek 4 for Kelvin verse, unfortunately. Beyond will be lucky to break even. They made a mistake allowing 4 years between ST09 and Into Darkness. That's too long between sequels. Into Darkness to Beyond was 3 years. If they wait until 2020 again, that's just too much time.

They should aim for release in Oct 2019. The Martian made 630 million in Oct 2015. It's a good spot for Trek because it's not the dead of winter, and there's no summer competition. If they still want Trek to be a summer movie, they need it first out of the gate, late April/Early May before the Marvel stuff dominates.

also Gravity (723m) in Oct 13.. Oct is clearly the month for marooned in space movies. maybe ST4 should be a remake of Tholian Web!

Paramount hasn't released it's schedule past the Summer of 2019 so there is still a possibility that a Trek film could come out in the fall of 2019.

Paramount's own sci-fi film Arrival was released last October and did good box office on a $50 million budget.
