Spoilers References in "Discovery"?

The deflector dish at the front of the USS Europa (and similar ones on other Binary Stars Starfleet ships) is straight off of Enterprise NX-01

 

Actually his line was that they couldn't. He either stays in the dark or goes blind. His line was about keeping his eyes at all.

 

He said "if want to keep my own eyes" not just "keep my eyes" which seems to imply he can get others.

Maybe a transplant? He said he wanted to keep his eyes, so he doesn't want a replacement.

He also said "I have to suffer light change slowly", so he can see in brighter areas, but the change needs to be gradual.

Michael Burnham references the "Geneva Protocols of 1949 and 2155", the latter is probably linked to the founding of the Coalition of Planets in "Demons" and "Terra Prime", which were set in 2155.

 

Huh, I had my years off, I thought ENT ended in 2156.

 

But they weren't in Geneva, they were in San Fran.

I like my fan theory that the Klingons were actually signatories to the 2155 ban on bioweapons, following the Augment virus.

 

Maybe there was another conference. Or maybe they simply updated and addended the 1949 version.

That brings up an interesting point. What would they need with phase canons if they have phasers?

 

No idea, really.

The Shenzhou I get, because she's supposed to be old enough that the class started out with them, and could only maybe be given a few new phasers banks later.

Maybe the ones on Discovery are a backup if the experiments cause the primary phasers to fail.

 

They're the same thing. It's just terminology. Because it's pre-TOS, they dropped in some "retro" ENT terminology.

Phase cannon = phaser

Photonic torpedo = photon torpedo (a Voyager episode spells out that they're the same thing)

Which implies "Phase" weapons lack the final rectifier which was a component that separates the two, an invention of the 23rd century.

 

Have they ever referred to "phased energy rectification" in the shows or movies? Because I'll bet the ENT writer/producer who thought "phase canon" was a cool prequel-y name for a phaser never read that technical manual.

 

Having not seen every new Okudagram in TNG-R were they added some of the manual info, I can't say for certain it's been left out altogether.

Beyond and Discovery have now in both universes included both, with phase cannons being an antique hold over from the 22nd century that by 2256 and 2263, still need to be described and used separately. With Burnham even implying Shenzhous phase cannons could be manually aimed at T'Kuvma's ship.
