Let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series violates Roddenberry's vision big time

Given he's keeping a xenomorph in his ship for what is almost certainly plans to unleash it on the Klingons, I think we can safely say Lucius Malfoy is a bad guy.

It would be an ENORMOUS twist if he wasn't.
It was a bit of twist why he wanted Burnham on board. It wasn't because he wanted a mutineer willing to break Star Fleet's ideals. So, I don't know.

And, there's also a difference between him being unethical and whether I find the character interesting. For instance, I don't get the sense he's going to be a dick for the entire series. That would get old. Time will tell though.

My read on the subject was he enjoyed:

1. Taking her down a peg
2. He wants her for all the reasons she has listed but she assumed he was after weapons when he was after something which will ASSIST weapons.

I think the jury is still out on whether Lorca is "nice," which I kinda like. I'll take interesting and ambiguous over nice any day. :)
Jason Isaacs has been typecast in the past Into playing villains, such as Col. Tavington in The Patriot, and Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up a villain or at least ambiguous here, too.

Sure. I just wish we wouldn't get main characters who fail that test like Sisko and Archer.

Yes, if only they were more like Riker, who covered up an illegal experiment and the true facts behind the loss of a Federation starship for the best part of two decades.

Or Worf, who gutted a high-ranking official in the Klingon Empire.

Or Wesley, who was prepared to cover up the death of an Academy cadet until he was shamed into doing otherwise.

Or Picard, who nearly let the Borg assimilate 21st Century Earth because he refused to evacuate his ship because he'd gone full Ahab.

Or KIRK, who called Klingons "animals" and wanted them all to die because he couldn't let go of his hate nearly A DECADE after the loss of David.

All these characters "failed" that test. Like Sisko and Archer, that fall was not as important as their efforts to rise back up. That's Roddenberry's vision - as Kirk said, "We're barbarians, but we can choose not to kill today". These people are still flawed, but they aren't going to let one lapse define them. And from her speech to Lorca at the end of ep1x03, neither is Burnham.

Who are you to damn someone's soul on the basis of one mistake, the Archangel Fucking Gabriel?

Are you still blaming your SO for that time they spilt wine on the carpet eight years ago?

Or, at the very least, he's an ends-justify-the-means kinda captain.

Honestly, I think my biggest issue with Picard was he often thought he was acting righteous when he was acting like a dick because--well, writers had differing idea of "good."

Picard is like, "Oh no, we could NEVER pretend to gods."

Then he's setting up Clone Jesus as Emperor on the Klingon homeworld.

We also have him keeping Duras' family dishonor secret and getting angry at Worf for killing him when, arguably, Picard was part of an illegal conspiracy to obfuscate the truth.

Really, Picard was a dick to the Klingons.

Edit:

But yes, while Season 1 and 2 Picard was supposed to be perfect, Best of Both Worlds gave him a fairly good trauma to build off of and much needed humanity.

Kirk was always human and got more so as time passed with Wrath of Khan and David's subsequent murder.

That could be and perhaps what we'll see is a continued tension between StarFleet's ideals and what he wants to do. That could be interesting to watch. Also, it doesn't mean he'll be a dick the entire time, which could get old. I don't know. We'll have to see. But the way he closed it with Burnham in the episode left me feeling optimistic.

Ah, yes, the only published reference to Kirk's junk in the official novel line.

“Hello, Jim.” As always, her lips seemed to caress his name as she spoke it.

He could almost catch the scent of her body fragrance, and he could feel the slight pressure of his genitals responding to those memories. She had been perfection—lover, friend, wife, mother, and in every other role and joy she supplied as he slowly recovered from the fatigue and emotional wounds of those five long years out there.
New band name: Captain Kirk's Quivering Genitals

That passage was in reference to Admiral Lori Ciana, right? Who after getting melted into Silly Putty in the transporter alongside Commander Sonak, Kirk mourns for all of thirty seconds before laughing at McCoy's "irrational" fear of being beamed up in the transporter.

Assuming the fungus space travel and any other technological advancements shown during STD have to fail in order for canon to be maintained, Lorca and the Discovery crew will have to be defeated. My money's on Burnham being turned into some sort of evil destroying messiah / female black Jesus character as was done to David Tennant's Doctor by Russell T Davies. It's so obvious, and it will massively offend Christian white middle America, something which STD has been explicitly written to do.

Even the show doesn't manage to do that, the cast are already managing it in spades.

You never fail to amuse!

Who let you into the meeting?

Nah, in those movies he had a British accent, which of course meant he's evil. In this and Awake he has an American accent, so he's good.... right? Right?
