Let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series violates Roddenberry's vision big time

lol, I feel like some of you are not even genuine in your praise of STD, sounds like a type of trolling, no way is anyone this impressed with what we've seen so far

Please do people the courtesy of taking them at their word, as opposed to telling us what we really think, or asserting your opinion as an absolute fact that cannot possibly be disputed.

You don't like the show? Fair enough. I believe you. I disagree, but I'm not going to accuse you of trolling just because we have different tastes and priorities. Or assert that there's "no way" anyone can possibly NOT be impressed . . ..

All I see in Discovery is a group of flawed people who are going to go through a lot of shit eventually growing into the 'Gene-vision' version of themselves. We are watching people earn a utopia that for so long was handed to us matter-of-factly.

Oh, bullshit. This show is determined to ween the audience away from that "Gene-vision" to a more traditional and generally more effective kind of dramatic storytelling. Any suggestion by the people involved that what's being shown now is going to lead us back in the direction of Roddenberry's superficial utopia is lip service intended to settle you all the fuck down.

Especially on the 3rd episode most characters, even the leads are often depicted as extremely cranky like a regular crime show on any regular tv script. Roddenberry's vision is not a fixation, it's what genuinely made TNG a phenomenon.

If by "Roddenberry's vision," you mean having a captain that hits on everything that moves, and selling stuff like IDIC and hoodies, I'd say Discovery is loyal. At least according to Jason Isaacs, anyway.

This could very much be true as well. Either way, I'm enjoying it now and would very much like to see where it goes. But somehow, I don't think it's going to stick to the 'starship of douchebags' format it has now for the entire run. Also, I meant that more figuratively, in that I think the characters will grow into the enlightened and good hearted people that Star Trek produces. Finding the (cue hippy music) utopia within themselves.

Sounds like something his foster sister would do. :)

Which, to me, is problematic. I would rather Burnham and the show stand on its own versus constantly calling back moments from other Trek. The callbacks should be the icing on the cake, not the flour they make the cake with.

Hell, they need those callbacks. Along with slapping Starfleet chevrons all over everything it's the main way they connect the show with Star Trek.

Set dressing for Lorca's office? Hey, let's put the hugest motherfucking tribble you've ever seen outside of TAS right on the corner of his desk so the camera can catch it as often as possible! That's what I call a Star Trek! :guffaw:

Well, my point was not that they're deliberately doing homages to previous eps and movies, but that Burnham's behavior is hardly beyond the pale when compared to, say, Spock. :)

On TOS, humanity was still a diamond in the rough, with a lot of sharp edges.

The arrowheads everywhere, even on the boots bothers me. We get it, you're Star Trek.

I wonder if their underwear and toilet paper have arrowheads on them? Do they have Starfleet branded tampons and condoms?

"Boldly go where no man has gone before. With protection!"

Oh no. Not Roddenberry's Vision.

Someone think of the children.
I think the purest depiction of Gene Roddenberry's Vision might be Pretty Maids All in a Row.

In all seriousness, has there ever been an iteration of Star Trek where someone could objectively say, "That's Gene's vision"? It takes a village, folks. Every version of Star Trek has lot of people's fingerprints all over them, so even whatever's closest to that "vision" (early TNG?) is a compromise.

Maybe the "purest" form of Star Trek only ever existed in Roddenberry's head.

Ah, so I should just ignore you then. Done.

There is no need to publicly announce putting somebody on your ignore list unless you just want to get a parting shot in.
Which is why you'll receive an infraction next time you do this.

That'd be one hell of an obscure Beatles reference.
