Wonderful episode. Discovery really is my cup of tea, and is giving me not only all the things I enjoy about modern TV, but the fantastical and imaginative elements of Trek that always appealed to me (particularly from the 2001 output onwards). I honestly can't understand how ANYONE can, with a straight face, claim that Discovery is inferior in quality to the first three episodes of any other Trek show. But to each their own - I survived as an ENT fan when Trekkies were pulling their OTT hate back in 2001, so I'll turn a blind eye here too.

Great visuals, interesting ideas, and some lovely little moments with this new set of characters. Burnham really is the lead here, and if her rank was "Captain," I don't think we'd be seeing the same amount of complaints about heavy focus on her. It's been stated from day one that she is the lead, so can't say I understand where the complaints are coming from...

Saru is fun, and I sense he will become a classic fan favourite as time goes by. His scenes with Burnham are top drawer, and I look forward to seeing him interact with others.

Lorca is everything I want in a 2017 Star Trek captain.

Apparently they still use C++ and Microsoft Windows in the 23rd century. There's a reference to NTDLL.DLL in this screencap:

Its stuff like this that drives me insane. LOL

I don't mind the design of the Discovery that much, but the CGI work in the third episode left a lot to be desired in my opinion. The ships CGI model looks just like that: a cheap CGI model, not to mention that short shot of the shuttle bay...

I'm also watching "The Expanse" right now and wow what a difference when in comes to the space sequences. "The Expanse" looks a lot better with probably half the budget...

8/10 for me! :)

A very good episode - loving the Lorca, his menagerie, the USS Discovery, Cadet Tilly, Stamets, and seeing the interplay between Burnham and Saru.

Also - not bothered by the mushroom science either - just as plausible as any other previously explored Trek ‘science’, IMO.

Overall - very pleased that we the audience have finally boarded the Discovery!

:)

Sigh, people who say this isn't Star Trek. Well you are entitled to your opinion but at the same time, are you the series writer? Have you ever had anything to do with the decision making?! We are the fans not series staff? I never thought I'd hear the same bullcrap I hear on the Star Wars forums!

I'm glad so many of you greatly enjoyed the show, because if I am being honest, I would hate to rely on myself to make sure that the series succeeds. The acting is strong--I still like Saru and Burham, and Tilly was interesting, although I found Lorca's enigmatic side to be forced. I like the ideas. There are things that are very Fullleresque that I like.

However, the pacing and the feel of the episode feels off. In one episode, Burnham goes from being completely shunned to being an insider on a major project that might not just win the war, but might change what peace looks like? That's a few episodes of development that were just blown through. And a lot of the episode was taken up by generic dialogue. Stamets and the security officer displayed a lot of pettiness: they may have been annoyed to work with Burnham, but we needed more of their characters to come through. We needed to see more interaction between them and other characters, not just Burnham.

i like the episode. Starting to see the main crew for the show.

the hologram computer interface is like Microsoft Hololens, without the need to wear the headset.

I thought this episode was really cool! Scary, mysterious, and fun. I like what we've seen of the new characters and LOVE the new ship. It was quite different from last week's episodes and I hope that some of the people who didn't like those are going to give this one another chance!

If I have any criticisms, it's that there were a few parts where it seemed to be trying too hard to be weird and quirky. The spore drive technology and the technobabble around it doesn't make any sense to me yet, and I don't see how it could fit with either real science or established treknology. But I'm willing to keep an open mind.

THAT should have been the pilot. Science, wonder, discovery (no pun intended), mystery, this episode had the whole package. Also, Tilly is adorable, I want to see more Tilly. Fuck me, I'm in! That was easily a 9/10. I'll think more on it so everything in my head has time to unpack, but that is what I wanted to see.

This show is completely different from the Star Trek we're used to, so there's going to be some expected push back. For me, it doesn't even feel like Star Trek. But after this episode, they certainly have my attention. It was very intriguing and I'm interested to see where they are going with this.
Arghh I want to see it now but I will have to wait until this afternoon. :wah:

I have high hopes for the Discovery and Lorca.

Has anyone tried to identify all the different aliens in the crew? That’s one of the things that make it interesting to me and like real sci fi. I saw one crew member who looked like the same species as the dancing girls in the first episode of Enterprise.

Regarding the argument over The Orville and Discovery ... I’m watching both. I like both, for different reasons. There’s zero conflict there.

I’m a woman who likes Star Trek, so I like the emphasis on female leads, but I most definitely like Lorca as a character and as eye candy. I am also pretty sure this is a Section 31/Black ops/top secret mission ship, which explains the scientists and the security and the black badges and Lorca’s world view. This ship may end up altering the prime timeline even more with their wacky spore engine. Maybe they’ll even erase the events of the pilot episode or themselves from the prime universe.

Hell if I know what to think about this. It was interesting, but honestly? Could have been *any* new sci-fi show. Didn't really feel like Star Trek. Reminded me a little of what I saw in Alien (never saw it through) or various other shows/movies.

Also Section 31ish. DARK. WE MUST HAVE DARK SHOWS, PEOPLE. ALL SHOWS MUST BE DARK.

People thoughts: Lorca: Fucked if I know what his game is. Burnham: I still like her in spite of her flaws. Tilly: Oh God, please make it stop. Stamets: Eh. Prison chick: Anyone with a brain knew what was going to happen in the chow hall and the results of that action.

Will rewatch it to get more out of it. I'm still on board though.

CBS All Access blows though. I went to watch After Trek after the show and couldn't get on via the CBS App. Must be related to that as my desktop worked fine (but I can't chromecast from there, so I'll wait 'til later to catch it). I wonder if they have a robust enough system to handle the traffic? From where I'm sitting, no.

Edit: Betcha those other prisoners en route to the prison place never make it. There will be an unfortunate accident.
Cant have witnesses to such a unique and secret ship.

Just so happens there is a handy war going on so their names can be added to the list of casualties.

That security lady though :guffaw:

"OoOOooOooo teh garbage is here."
"Starfleet says we gon done have to feed the animals."

We get it, love. You're the token Tough Chick, written without the depth of Kira Nerys and B'elanna Torres and performed without the acting skills of Nana Visitor and Roxann Dawson.

They may as well have put Michelle Rodriguez in that role and let her do her usual thing. The effect can't have been more daft than this amusing spectacle.

It's CBSAA. I don't think they're up to snuff in handling this many people on their service, and we're seeing odd things happen that shouldn't be happening.
Its to be expected on a new service, they should get it fixed in time for next week though.
