I think the "Burnham is a pariah" period is officially over. Everyone has warmed up to her by the end.

I'm really enjoying the show. Good drama, interesting story that is keeping me engaged and also interesting characters that I want to know more about.

I think the "Burnham is a pariah" period is officially over. Everyone has warmed up to her by the end.
Except Saru, the concerned redhead from the Shenzhou and I don't think Security Chief Tori is warm to anyone.

Really? Because that's exactly what they did with Star Wars.
Lucas sold the company. Disney didn't take it from him. CBS would have to be willing to sell. It's still a cash cow even without movies or TV shows being made.

I rewatched the episode and I think I liked it better the second time around than the first. I originally gave the episode a 7, but I think I might bring it up to an 8. I'll do what I liked and didn't like so far, based on two viewings.

What I Didn't Like

  • I think my issue with the first viewing was it didn't really feel like Star Trek. It has the name, but there was a lot of negativity to everything, partly the reactions to Burnham. I guess it's plausible, considering she was a mutineer, but For a starfleet crew to be this pessimisstic about a lot of things, there was an aroura of BSG to it.
  • It looked really dark. When I saw it originally, it was really hard to see what was going on
  • Stamitts still comes off as a douche, even if he did had a right to his grieveances. He kind of reminds me of a negative early Doctor Bashir
What I Liked
  • Lorca is great so far. He has an arrogance to him that I do actually like, and Issacs already proven ego is fulfilling the role nicely.
  • The Dialog was a lot better this week, especially coming from Saru and Lorca. Saru had two digs at Burnham, and the scene in the ready room with Burnham and Lorca at the end was really well done
  • There was a nice Alien Vibe to the away mission

Watching this episode again, I didn't really understand the spore scene originally so I focused more on that. So they are using organic spores to travel faster, but I'm still confused what the alien is there for. Also, did anyone get an Iconian vibe when Burnham was being transported to Romulus and Andoria? It almost feels like they are trying to duplicate Iconian technology, which is a nice call back to TNG, along with the "Number One" stuff.

I'm still intrigued about what is to come, but looking at this episode from seeing it twice, I'm raising my grade to an 8.5. It was very much better than last week and I have to say the Ship looks really nice. I know people had qualms when that first teaser came out, but seeing it in action looked cool.

I do hope we have some levity in this series. Maybe at the end of the war we might, but light contrast with Dark makes me happy.

I noticed Keyla (the former Shenzhou helmsman) is sporting a new look. Considering she didn't appear to sustain injuries during the Battle at the Binary Stars, could this be why she was assigned to the Discovery, to treat the injuries she got that led to her new look? Maybe she's afraid of Burham because the injury has made her afraid of her former superior and likely close colleague?

That was a decent episode. Outside of there being too many jerks on the Discovery crew, I liked the episode fairly well. Lorca was intereteresting. A bit nuts, but I think that will lead to interesting things. I liked his Predator style trophy room at the end. Tilly was a bit annoying but not too bad. Saru was good with the bit he got, and Burnham remains a good character (and she didn't even do anything stupid on this episode).

Since I've pretty much reached the acceptance stage when it comes to the klingons (I'll always hate the STD klingons and I dont even really accept them as the same species as the ones from TOS to ENT), I'm still enjoying the show despite them, which surprises me. The preview for the next episode looked good, so hopefully the show can keep its momentum going.

8/10

You want to know what will happen if Discovery doesn't do well because a bunch of butt-hurt fans boycott it? Star Trek will disappear as a television franchise permanently.
Been watching first run since 1969. I can say for certainty that just won't happen.

It may be 'dark' again for 4 - 5 years (because that's been the trend) since the original Star Trek series went off the air; there hasn't been more than a 4 year gap between SOME film or TV version of Star Trek being made.

Love ir Hate the current incarnation, all CBS/Paramount cares about is the bottom line - and they just care about who PAYS and how much - not WHY they pay (Either to support it because they enjoy it; or to view and dissect it so they can yell/post every flaw and thing they hate about it.)

ST: D Season 1 is (and was) ALREADY profitable for CBS before the first episode aired. The only question they have now is: "How much can they make form it?"
^^^
That will drive any ultimate decision regarding ST: D's future.

As for the franchise - again, things ebb and flow. However ST: D ultimately performs; it WON'T be the last Star Trek incarnation we see.

We see two of them with a new project. And they are bragging about how they xan conduct more scientific experiments than other ships. This lends it to being a new ship class

And if we take Star Trek III and some of TNG episodes into account, there at still a few Crossfield-class ships floating around. Modified of course, but still present.

This episode is not how I was expecting Discovery to be whatsoever...not AT ALL, and it was such a shocking revelation as I watched it. It was an amazing feeling to be completely surprised and blown away in shock from watching Star Trek and seeing something I had never expected or seen before. SO much dark and grit, so much douche and comedy, but also so spacey and fantasy. This series quite literally has a little bit of everything in it. The show is definitely not like anything I would expect from Trek, and I am totally on board for it!

I am looking forward to the relationship Saru and Michael develop in their post-mutiny lives, and I don't think I can possibly get enough of Tilly.

Some references I noticed or read else where

Michael mentioned knowing 'Suus Mahna', a Vulcan combat form first mentioned by T'Pol in Enterprise. It was also referenced in the ST'09 novel. (Credit - TrekCore)

Strall, Stamets' counterpart on the USS Glenn mentioned the 'Zee-Magnees Prize', which was a Prize Dr. Daystrom was mentioned winning in TOS. (Credit - TrekCore)

Michael mentioned that Amanda read her and Spock 'Alice in Wonderland' when growing up, @starmike pointed out in the canon thread, that this might be a reference to TAS, where it was mentioned that Amanda was fond of Carroll's works.

Just for the record, I like Discovery so far and will keep watching. But I am also not a fan of how EVERY SHOW these days has to be grim and dark. Especially Star Trek. It shouldn't be, but that's the road Discovery has chosen so far. The tone is more Battlestar Galactica than Star Trek. I mean, what the hell is with that? There are no more light hearted optimistic shows AT ALL, of any genre except sitcoms. Why do all serious stories now have to be so depressing and grim?

Am I just crazy because I was a kid at the time, or was 80s/90s entertainment much more upbeat and optimistic? And not just Star Trek, but everything?

The Orville.

After watching 3 episodes so far, i must say Sonequa Martin-Green being casted as Michael Burnham was a good move. I had my doubts because i was not a fan of her in TWD but she is perfect for this role. I hope she continues to grow on me.

Which shows? I was watching stuff like Hill St Blues, St Elsewhere, NYPD Blues, ER and Thirtysomething in the 80s/90s. They could be pretty dark and downbeat. As were genre shows like Twin Peaks and the X-Files. That's pretty good company IMO.
