Actually, it was something like this - the Federation and the Klingons had last spoken to each other about 100 years prior, like in negotiations. However, over that century, there had been terror raids and the battle at Donatu V.

I had a thought when I learned that Sarek had left something of himself, a part of his katra in Burnham. When a Vulcan mind melded with another life form, was it an always thing or a sometimes it happens thing if he or she left some part of their katra in the minds of those who they melded with?

And, I learned from an interview, that the third episode can be seen as a second pilot for the series, with us being introduced to the Discovery. Couldn't we have started with this episode, with us getting a summary of what transpired in the first two episodes?

Heavens, this would have given me a lot less faith in the show. This is the flashpoint, the trigger to the bullet we ride for the rest of this season's story. It's the mandatory prologue. It's too vital to the plot, too vital to the central protagonist, to be given the ol' "let's just reference that event in passing" ringer.

PICARD: "Numbah One, as I recall, we were investigating an ancient Klingon vessel-"
RIKER: "Here we go!"
RIKER chuckles.
PICARD: "-and you had the brillllliant idea to call their bluff!"
RIKER: "I was acting in the best interests of the Federation!"
Deanna smirks; Geordi shakes his head and whistles.
SCENE TRANSITION.

We can't do that here.

- I agree that the 'starting a war' charge was BS
BUT
- In addition to assaulting the Captain - she was also clearly going against the Captain's clearly stated order that she would not fire first. Had Burnham been more successful with her attempt at a neck pinch and had the crew successfully carry out Burnham's order to fire - EVEN IF that 'defused' the situation and no one on the Fed side dies; Burnham would still have been rightfully charged and convicted of Mutiny.
She'd be charged with dereliction of duty, disobeying a direct order from a flag officer, and assaulting a senior officer. She'd be court martialed for sure, kicked out of the service, and probably have to do time. But mutiny is a pretty hard charge to make stick, especially in an isolated incident of an individual acting alone without greater malice.

I think inf anything the testimony of Lt. Saru (who was pretty much the only bridge officer questioning her about if she was really following the orders/wishes of the Captain) would have been enough to make a mutiny charge stick. She didn't just disobey and order, she first assaulted her Captain directly with the intent of firing on a Klingon vessel <--- which was expressly against the orders of the Captain.

Well definitely better than the first part. Most of it held my interest although the court martial at the end was a bit of a letdown and not really something that would make someone come next week.

Bummed about Georgiou although not surprised. Indifferent about T'Kuvma; the Klingons aren't doing it for me.

I still like Burnham but her judgment was meh.

The "leaving part of my katra" bullshit? No. Not accepting that.

Liked it better than the first ep. More action this go-around. This needed to be on the free CBS to hook non-Trek fans. Too much time wasted in part one on dull Klingon stuff and non-action.

Yeah. I'm going to watch again to decide, but it's looking more and more to me like TVH should have been condensed down to a first act.

So how unhappy do you think Netflix is that they are getting 36 minute episodes for what was supposed to be a 50-60 minute show?

From the episode, she was charged with dereliction of duty, assaulting a fellow officer, and mutiny. For pleading guilty, she was stripped of rank and sentenced to life imprisonment. (Have the writers forgotten that in Star Trek's universe that criminals are rehabilitated?)

I am thankful I went with the no commercial plan - commercials disrupt the flow of an episode. Having to endure 23 minutes of commercials would detract from any enjoyment I could derive from the episode. (I watch Orville on YouTube for the same reason - I want to experience the episode, not get bogged down in commercials.)

I'm going on the assumption there's foul play afoot and the ending was just too haphazardly thrown together.

Episode 1 runs 42 minutes 30 seconds for me and Episode 2 just a smidge over 40 minutes.

Go watch TOS - "The Menagerie" and see what the Federation Penalty is for visiting TALOS IV (The events of "The Cage" is just two years past)...I'll wait...;)

Enterprise's first season ran 44.5 minutes per episode. Starting in Season 2 they were cut down to almost exactly 43 minutes each including the opening titles and end credits. 2002 was the last time the average uncut Star Trek episode had a running time of around 45 minutes.
