David Gerrold was not invited to the premiere. Seems unhappy about it.

I've wondered if anyone took DC's temperature on this Burnham business, she as much if not more than anyone defined Spock's familial relationships
IDK - yes, TOS - "Journey To Babel" gave Spock's parents 'life' as more then just a passing mention (which happened in a few first season episodes); but Theodore Sturgeon did just as much and more with TOS - "Amok Time"
^^^

My point - yes, she wrote a pivotal Spock episode, but a number of others did so as well that also contributed a lot to the Vulcan mythos of Star Trek..

People keep talking about David Mack not being invited to the Discovery premiere, but I don't think they usually invite tie-in writers to premieres, so I'm not surprised. I understand that he worked a bit more closely with the writers than normal, but it's not like he was an actual member of the writing staff.

Sounds to me like the idea was simply to exclusively invite fans, regular and famous ones, not people who previously worked or are currently working on Star Trek.

David Gerrold should have thought about these things when he took sides against CBS in the Axanar debacle. That aside, the man sounds like a spoiled brat crybaby. There were countless people who did a lot more on the various shows and movies that likely weren't invited. His sense of entitlement is astonishing....all because he wrote one notable episode.
One notable episode is more than most people will ever achieve.

If Mack was helping them out, he should have been there. Beyer should have made noise to make it happen. Or the EP's.
Well, if it was an oversight, they should let him know they didn't mean to exclude him or something. Just as a show of good faith.

Muhuhwahwa!!

and don't forget Gerrald is still invovled in a current ongoing lawsuit involving Star Trek over a Dr. Suess/Star Trek mashup. Even beyond axanar I doubt you would invite somebody there is an active lawsuit against.

Hey, Dave. Paybacks are hell. Bite the hand that feeds you, and you might not get fed again.

Whoever was in charge of sending invitations either didn't have an all-inclusive list, or just had to pick and choose. Eventually you run out of seats, and the fire marshal has no sense of humor.

I imagine being it's one big popularity contest to get invited to something like this. Hollywood is all about popularity, who knows who, who is hot, who kissed whose ass, etc. It just means you aren't one of those people in that crowd. That's Hollywood.

Almost certainly the case. The theater's capacity is 800, and I imagine that studio VIPs and the great and the good of Hollywood whom none of us know from Adam would take up a decent chunk of it. The producers and actors from Discovery would also have taken up a chunk. After that, it's just prioritizing for publicity reasons. Casts of the prior shows get invited before writers no one would recognize, hot pop-sci personalities get invited before tie-in writers, and so on, and so forth. Invites would have less to do with what someone has done for the franchise in general or DSC in particular, and who's more likely to get a pull-quote on a website or local paper's TV section.

Shatner sounds royally lost in his quote -- you can even read what he said in Donald Trump's voice and it sounds par for the course. Does he even know it's a TV show? Sounds like he thinks it's a movie.

Not really. Shatner relates to everything in terms of show business and his work. His experience the other evening was simply of being at a gala opening and probably just enjoying the hell out of that. What's the show? Does it matter?

Was Wheaton not invited or did he just not want to go?

That seems like an odd decision on CBS's part. For starters, the guy has a recurring and popular role on the network's most popular series. Plus his opinion carries a lot of weight in the fandom. Seems like the kind of person they'd want going to bat for them.

I don't think they were looking to stack the audience with former Trek stars. Rather, those who were present were there for a reason:

Shatner: 'nuff said.

Nichols: pioneering African American actor from TOS, passing baton to new African American actor in Trek.

Frakes: he's directing Discovery.

Who else was there from earlier series?

Several of the cast from ENT, Roxann Dawson from VOY, and a couple of writers.
