Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

You are not. But I don't know any other good way to initialize her name.

How hard is it to say the word Sonequa-Martin Green?:vulcan:

Honestly, people are looking for any fault with this show, simply because the crew and showrunners set it in the past but have made it look contemporary compared to the original, and because they've decided to truly tackle current issues rather than just obfuscate them in metaphor like on past shows. Most of these so-called 'fans' should stick to Star Trek Continues (for how long it lasts) and The Orville, leaving the rest of us alone to watch and like Discovery.

You understand that if those fans do that you will only be getting a single season of the show right?

Those fans with their boo-boo bitching aren't the totality of people getting CBSAA or Netflix to see the show, but middle-aged Gen-X'ers pissed off that their precious 24th century won't be continued, and that the ship design, costumes and sets will be of the same style as the Bad Robot films; said 'fans' aren't really needed.

I'm not a fan of Seth McFarlane because of his lack of tolerance for people who don't share his beliefs.

You mean, he doesn't 'tolerate' racial hatred, misogyny, homophobia and fascism from the 'majority' of Americans who voted for Trump and expect others to just stand back and take it/lay down and die.:vulcan::rolleyes:

That said, The Orville seems to feature adventure, fun, character work, and as he noted in a recent interview, actual dramatic storytelling. Those are all things I want from Star Trek in general, but see very little of in Discovery. Had Discovery TRULY drawn from TOS, there would be a mix of humor and adventure with social commentary, focus on character, and drama. No, I haven't seen an episode of the show, but the trailers have shown very dire circumstances, a very old conflict (Federation vs. Klingons) and not any fun at all. The news is depressing and "realistic" enough, so I don't need that from Trek.

As somebody else here said, the shiny happy bright Trek has been done to death-it's time for something more serious and challenging in the franchise, not just a repeat of TNG and Voyager. There's no 'dire' anything going on that didn't happen on TOS or DS9, or even on TNG or Voyager at times. And judging from the trailers may be wrong, because I don't see anything 'dark' about the show other than the lighting on both ships. Looks like people want a repeat of the low-budget 1960's but no TV show made now is ever going to do that and get a viewing audience made up of anybody else but middle-aged Gen-X Trek fans in love with TNG.

The TNG gen xers will just be replaced by the ds9 millenials. Completely anecdotal, no one in my age group (born in 90s) feels that tng even holds a candle to ds9 even though it's still good. When someone comes into a fandom so far removed from when it was actually "in the moment" they're not exposed to all the negativity and the things they "should" not like. Like when the TNG fans had to put up with "not my captain". There's going to be a whole generation of people that their star trek is going to be discovery, just like mine is ds9 and for some voyager etc. The irony is, that alot of those people who in their youth were most supportive of TNG and probably derided the old "foggy" TOS fans who just won't give TNG a chance are now doing the EXACT SAME THING.

You do realize that without a single viewer the first season has been fully paid for. This is getting funded, and at a level far higher then any other Trek, through it’s overseas Netflix deal. CBS is hoping to double its online subscriber base, but even without meeting those very modest goals the show won’t end after one season.

CBS has thrown a vast sum of money trying to make a successful 5th network, they have tried for over two decades and still lose money off of broadcast.

CBS is going to not drop this investment which is even more important in getting a foot in the subscription based market where TV distribution is heading in a big way. I think a realistic worse and that’s with the Netflix deal ending after its first year (which we don’t even know if that is possible), the show should get three years and at worse a lowered more typical budget.

Oh and since Netflix doesn’t release global numbers (well almost never) outside of us hearing that the deal is done we will have practically no way to measure the shows success where it’s most important, and that is outside of the US. Financially speaking the US is almost an after thought.
