Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

From what I hear, Discovery is going to top that; they are actually traveling to the Star Trek universe to film the episodes.

I really really hope that this doesn't turn into some sort of DS9/B5 rivalry. I'd like both shows to have very long, very good runs. And they seem very different in style and story. Let there be room for both. (Also I strongly suspect that Trek fans would come out on the losing side of any of these arguments.)

AMAZING. Simply amazing the attention to detail involved!

Hmmm....That's a cause for concern.

Anything the film crew does in the 10-years-before-Kirk's-TOS universe can cause ripple effects that could change not just the TOS universe, but TNG, DS9, VOY, and all of the non-Abrams films.

I just hope a dolly grip doesn't step on a butterfly or something :sigh:

It has already begun(palpatine voice)

I was watching the Trekyards Orville video a few weeks ago, and accidently tripped and slid down into the comments section.

Oh my goodness...

I'm one of those people that thought that The Orville trailer looked better than the STD one. The main reason is lighting and mood, the former looks optimistic/bright/futuristic while the latter is gloomy, depressing, dystopian. I feel like the last 15-20 years have been gloomy in the Sci Fi arena and I'm really sick of it.

Neither is shaping up to be the Star Trek I want, which would be driven by Science Fiction ideas, extrapolations of the cutting edge thought about our future. But fun/comedy/action is definitely better than interpersonal dramatic conflicts that span entire seasons. Everyone seems to agree that STD is going to be a long novel driven by interpersonal conflicts with some war stuff as a backdrop. None of this interests me at all. I'm looking forward to be proven wrong with STD, but with The Orville I know what I'm getting and I'm okay with it.

I wouldn't say it's better, it's just different. But I can see why some are tired of it. I can see the appeal of a fun swashbuckling adventure or an exciting exploration with some comedy and nice crew interaction. Instead of the season-long arc of personal angst and epic drama.
I just hope they'll do the latter well and give us glimpses of the former.

I think Star Trek Beyond did a great job there, capturing the Star Trek mood. Humour, adventure, drama.

I think most people enjoy dramatic cliffhangers "WILL HE BETRAY HER?!" and sometimes I do too, but I don't want to see any of it in Star Trek. There's so much room for this type of story telling in literally every other show out there, I just want some Sci Fi in Star Trek, but if I'm not getting it, and it looks like I'm not, then light comedy can be fun entertainment as well.

It's going to be OK. Just sit for a minute, breathe, and try to relax. Can someone get a cold compress?

I'm wondering where the "dystopian" part comes from since absolutely nothing implies as such.

It's like people saying the trailer showed a "temporal displacement" when nobody can actually show where that was.

The dark gloomy mood seems dystopian, like The Expanse and every other dark/gloomy show out there.

If I turn the light off in my office, it's not dystopian. Also, you might want to check the lighting differences in TNG of the shows vs. the movies.

In real life it isn't, but in entertainment dark lighting is often used a psychological device to convey a gloomy atmosphere.

What is it exactly that you're arguing, that I'm getting a dystopian feeling from the trailers?

Yeah, both trailers appear to preview a show that takes itself really serious.

It's not the greatest sign, but it could just be the trailer.

I just want some Sci Fi in Star Trek
Can I ask what doesn't appear to be sciene fiction with DSC? I get the lighting issue and the more dystopian look, though I supect it will be a little different with the main ship, but that remains to be seen.

I think that trailers are poor representations of what the final product will be, and I doubt that "dystopian" will be a descriptor that the production team are going for.

Even though I think The Orville looks pretty good and I suppose it will be quite funny, I have very little interest in it... and I think it really comes in at a bad time..! Afraid that it might steal some of DSC's thunder... and the DSC-haters will probably keep bringing in The Orville as 'the real ST show, the show DSC should have been', etc etc.... so all in all, I'm not happy with the timing of it....
