Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

...Since it seems that, other than a few references to events and earlier characters and settings and the generic ship designs, DSC is going to bear little resemblance to "ST ten years before Kirk" so why use the ST name at all. Except for marketing and an cynical attempt to sell into an existing fanbase.....
I think that will depend on the overall story they tell. If the political and social backdrop of the Federation in the overall story they tell is a backdrop that is akin to "ten years before Kirk's TOS", then it belongs ten years before Kirk's TOS.

Why not have courage in your product and go the whole hog, and design and produce something totally new in a new setting ??
Because the product being sold is Star Trek. Discovery isn't a new idea it is a Star Trek idea.

Maybe for season 2, They'll change the title to just "Discovery."

"...It's been a looong time..

Vger23 to English free translation:

But the [Discovery] uniforms and the ships don't look like [they belong in] Pike's era.

Hey, what do you know? When translated it is completely logical!

Since only a percentage of the hardcore fans care whether or not the ships and uniforms look like they come from a certain era, your translation may be logical, but the expectation is not.

;)

Don't you mean TEH SHIPZ AND THE YOUNIFORMS? How will the hardcore FANZZ (that you tried to mock) understand you now?

I've been on Star Trek forums since they were a thing. This is the most rationale and civilized forum, by far, I have ever encountered.
Yes, even the official Star Trek boards, when those were still around, were far inflammatory and frequently very negative.

Though, the best one, by far, was the poster discussing how crucifixion was never a real thing. That was amusing.

I'm super impressed that the USS Orville bridge has a wraparound LCD screen for a bridge window. That must look amazing in action, and super-cool for the actors to react to stuff they actually see.

I wonder if Discovery will do similar, or if their crew will be gazing at a big greenscreen?
