Part of me is hoping for something like Diamond Select (although I had bad luck getting a working TOS Communicator), but another part of me just wants cool things like this in a Toys R Us so everyone can see how flippin cool Star Trek gear is!

The Twitter post says phaser, and the actors so far have been saying that as well. Beyond that, "phaser" is now indelible with Star Trek, so I'm pretty sure they'll be called phasers.

My headcanon generally has the crew from "The Cage" *actually* saying "phasers" instead of lasers.

As to the awesome new prop, I wonder if you switch the function by twisting the emitter like the Cage weapons? There's obviously a Type-1 to pop off the top too...

I first thought that, but there looked to be a control of some kind on the back, like TOS Phaser IIs. My thinking is that you turn that control and the emitter then moves, eliminating the need to move it by hand (which always seemed unsafe to me).

So far the phaser and communicator are the only things that look even remotely like TOS. And ironically, they look less advanced than the communicators and phase pistols used in ENT 100 years before DSC.
