USA distribution -CBS All Access discussion

Now that they have expanded to 15 episodes, it's even cheaper:

Even better, since Netflix had foot the bill for a big part of this production, it would be nice to see it there, a service that most people have already, like what others will be seeing in other countries besides the US and Canada.

^ But if you get the episodes from iTunes, which we all know will happen (sooner or later), you can keep them forever without having to pay any additional subscription fees. Just get a Season Pass and you're done. Permanently. A one-time charge.

And it's not guaranteed that CBS-AA will always make the episodes available, is it? They know as well as anyone that fans will want to subscribe, then binge-watch all the episodes, then unsubscribe again. So CBS is not going to have the eps available any longer than they have to.

This is the worst case scenario that is theorized by people here and in other places but that is not how CBSAA has treated their other (and right now only) CBSAA exclusive show, The Good Fight. All the episodes are available to anyone. You could sign up for the week-long free trial, watch the entire 10 episode series in a few days, and cancel before CBSAA got any money out of you. I find it hard to believe they would change their business model just for DSC.

I'm sure that whatever kind of show The Good Fight is, its fans are different from Trek fans, and will probably be treated differently by CBS-AA. Because while fans of the other show might not subscribe just to binge-watch and then cancel again, DSC fans definitely will if able.

In my observations, its less a fandom thing, and more of a cultural shift. Binge watching through episodes is far more common, including on Netflix series, than even with DVDs.

I wouldn't lose sleep over the possibility of CBSAA making it hard for people to give them money until I have an actual reason to. For now, I think based off how they treat another show under the same model is pretty reliable info.

If I subscribe to a service like this, I expect their full content available to me at all times. I pay through Amazon Prime for HBO and Showtime and I have full access to all their content (not anything live though) as long as my subscription is paid. I expect nothing less from CBS, and if I get less, then I most certainly will be one of those who subscribe just long enough to see their fucking show and drop them like a rock. That is, if I want their show that bad, which I suspect I will with DSC.

Yeah why would CBSAA single themselves out as they only streaming service that punishes people for subscribing at X date rather than Y date? No one else does this. I think this whole theory about locking out late adopters is based on nothing except cynicism about the model in general.

I can assure you I still don't like the idea of a monthly payment for one TV show. If CBS had other stuff I was interested in, this wouldn't be an issue for me. I subscribed to HBO mainly for Game of Thrones, but HBO has lots of other stuff that's interesting to me. Showtime the same way, I got it for Homeland but they had many other shows I like.

If anyone is curious, it's not hard to cancel CBSAA, contrary to a lot of the hysterical theories about how CBSAA would make it a pain to cancel or you'd have to call numbers and be put on hold etc etc.

All I did was go to my account, click Cancel Subscription. They offer a month of CBSAA for free if you threaten to cancel, which I declined. Then you confirm cancellation and it's over and done with. Not a pain, no phone calls, no waiting period to confirm cancellation. Quite simple. The only reason I cancelled is because I'm not using it that much right now, but I'm going to get back on it once DSC comes out.

Dsc was planned as a 13-episode 1st season. If the premiere is 90 minutes i'm guessing that is 2 episodes officially so it would be a 3 month subscription of CBSAA for 12 weeks. Sure the premiere would be available on CBS network free but you would have still needed to subscribe when episode 3 started for 3 months. By changing the number of episodes to 15 it requires a 4-month subscription unless you wait a couple of weeks to start watching the series and be able to watch a couple episodes in a week to catch up. CBS knows this.
A good analogy is Disney World's parking lot. If they charge $12. To park say 10,000 cars every day by raising that price overnight to $14. They just made another $20,000./day.
Instead of 3 months of subscribing to CBSAA you now need 4 months. For example say 3 million CBSAA subscribers that's another $17.9 million and no churn for another month and also in a different business quarter.
Look at Netflix's "Stranger Things" in 2016. It was officially renewed internally for season 2 before season 1 even premiered so the writers could work on season 2 but it was kept secret and not publicly disclosed until maybe halfway through season 1.
I would also guess CBS is not going to have a long period of time internally (CBSi& Netflix) kept under wraps renews DSC is renewed for season 2 and writing continues and they have a short hiatus in production and also season 2 premieres in say June 2018 which would require a minimum or not 8 months of no subscription for trek-only fans subscribing to CBSAA but more like 6 months. While a DSC season is not 24 or 26 episodes CBS is probably going to be front-loading season 1&2 to get back on a release cycle during a certain quarter of the year as well as get as many subscribers for a 12-month period with minimum churn (subscribers cancelling). I'm guessing CBSi wants a late Spring-window 2018 so as not to compete with the CBS network's shows during the main season.
Look at the home video release cycle for the Blu-ray release and how CBSi (CBSAA) can capitalize on it for season 2 start.

Although I have seen every version of Star Trek on television, I'm not sure that I'm willing to pay for a subscription service to watch ST: Discovery. Since CBS appears to be requiring a subscription to their access service, I will probably wait to see if it comes to DVD or will go without. I like Star Trek, but like many other things in life, it isn't a necessity.

With it announced that DSC will have new episodes every Sunday starting Sept.24 look at CBS network's actual schedule. It shows Star Trek is not a threat since CBS's NCIS Named Most-Watched Drama Series in the World [ NCIS has now won the award three out of the last four years.]
SUNDAY
7-8 PM — 60 Minutes
8-9 PM — WISDOM OF THE CROWD
9-10 PM — NCIS: Los Angeles
10-11 PM — Madam Secretary
So CBS putting the premiere on the night of football and 60 Minutes doesn't matter to the ratings of regular shows. It is the following week where any competition from CBSAA would happen.
Since Trek fans are paying for a subscription to CBSAA the hit to any Nielsen ratings probably isn't anything since fans of NCIS: Los Angeles would just DVR that series and watch it within 3-7 days. Or they could see it on CBSAA.

I guess we should wonder if after the break in January 2018 if CBSAA would make new episodes available on Sunday evenings or another night?

Actually not true on good fight being their only exclusive show. They also did a season of big brother called over the top that was only on all-access as a way to get people who subscribed for the main big brother live feeds to keep subscribing for a few more months by having a whole different season of BB on all-access.

And in the case of Big Brother, they still have all the episodes back to season 1 up and available on all-access.

The only time I have seen all access not have full runs of shows up is where they already had distriuton deals with another service (Big Bang Theory being one that comes to mind). They havent had a habit of removing shows from the service. Netflix is actually a lot worse about that.

The sunday night schedule is largely meaningless because if they do it like good fight the show will be available early in the morning on sunday so even if you wanted to watch NCIS at 9 you would still have all day you could watch Star Trek before then. The only exception to the sunday morning release will be the second episode will be launch on CBSAA after episode 1 airs on CBS. After that expect them in the mornings to show up.

It sounds like you already are a subscriber to CBSAA. Can you tell us what time zone you are in and what time "The Good Fight" was made available each week?

I'm in Central, and it was sometime around midnight. I couldn't tell you exactly when as I was asleep, but I know I woke up at 2:30am once and it was there.
