What would be a deal breaker for you in Discovery?

I think there is a way to update the Cage era look while holding onto a sense of the uncluttered minimalism. I shudder to say this, but that's at least what the intent of Axanar was (whether they were going to achieve it or not).

@M: I like your avatar. Is that something that you cooked up or what?
Yes! Thanks for noticing. In anticipation of Discovery in general and Michael Burnham in particular I wanted to create a possible look into the series that could at first glance come off as a screenshot of an actual episode. Of course a lot of it is pure guesswork at this point; no one really knows what the uniforms will look like, how Sonequa's hair will be made up and if that set from the trailer was actually the Discovery bridge.

Being beat over the head with SJW crap.
Not living in the USA I never quite understood how the term “social justice warrior” could become such a negative connotation. For my European ears it actually sounds like something rather good.

It is something good, but it depends on who's saying what, as with so many things. Standing up for social justice, social equality, it's a great thing. However, some people become almost militant in their speeches and actions, and give what is supposed to be something great a bad rep. If you want to reach people with a message of love and understanding between all genders and skincolors, don't broadcast that message with terms like 'f***ing nazi's' for example. If you want to reach those people, don't call them names. Don't go out during rallies and use violence. That's not how you spread love and understanding.
So yeah, it's a certain type of SJW that gave it a bad name really. In my opinion, that is. ;)

The term 'warrior' is being used to mock and ridicule, by hyperbolically comparing the SJW to a soldier, thus implying that they have delusions of grandeur.

P.S. I like the full size version of the avatar even better! The uniform looks great! :techman:

Treatment of the characters. They've gotten some great actors in the mix, but if they don't evolve and develop over time they just become stale and uninteresting.

I'm also very interested how Trek portrays its first gay character, and hoping that there is more too him other than that being a defining characteristic or turning him into some sort of stereotype.

If it is hollow and without any substance, boring witless, dreary bad drama, charm and humour is a must!
I have seen so much by now....I do not need any lame cutcorners stuff anymore!

I just hope that it will be mildly interesting... I miss space based shows!

Something is wrong if you're grounding your 16 year old for seeing sideboob and buttcrack.
Because some parents like to believe (delude themselves) their children are clones and not the product of the horizontal rumba. Consider at 16 years old you can get married, join the armed forces and legally make offspring, being grounded for seeing buttcrack is ridiculous.

If you aren't open at home, your kids will go out and learn about it elsewhere. Sometimes with lifelong damaging results.

There's something about Star Trek that advocates for a sort of, I dunno, Martin Luther King "we're all in this together" style approach. Kirk's big speeches were an appeal to do the right thing. It was about the issues, not about the individuals:

Picard took that approach and gave it a stentorian spin.

There are many (probably a big group who voted in Trump) who feel that social justice has devolved into little more than shaming and name-calling, which just furthers an us vs. them mentality.

The nasty expletive-laden way the gay sulu issue was argued online, even by the filmmakers themselves, provides a real contrast to the passionate but civil way Trek delivered ideological speeches. The idea is if you don't see things the way we do then we won't try to get through to you, we'll just spit on you and walk away. That's the kind of thing that simply accomplishes nothing in this world, or just makes things worse.

Exactly! The nations that have high teenage rates are the ones where sex education is considered taboo or not important.

Perhaps the social justice warriors with a seemingly rude facade are on the 'I'm as mad as hell and can't take it anymore' wagon. After all, being nice to fascists and racists worked for all those years right?
I can understand the attitude even if I do not practice it myself (Or I try not to)

I think it's part and parcel of the loss of civility that the internet has been doing to our brains for the last 20+ years. All you have to do is search out where there's an active flamewar going on in this very forum (which will probably include this thread as well) to see this playing out. People's interpersonal skills have eroded thanks to the perceived anonymity of the internet and we then take that out on the road in how we handle people face to face. Activism has simply become trying to out-scream and out-shout the other guy.

For me:

A total redesign of the known species - not needed whatsoever - the only reason they did it in The Motion Picture was because prosthetics got better and that was needed to make the Klingon's look more sinister.

And lastly, if it just turns into an SJW show. I'll stick with my TNG/DS9/VOY if it comes to that thank you very much!!!

That might be true but I find it a little absurd to criticize the "Social Justice Warriors" for that first and foremost. Some of them/us just have a rather harsh reaction to the insane amount of hate that conservative extremists are spewing.

Regarding Discovery, I don't see what a "SJW show" would be. I'm expecting it to be progressive because I wouldn't expect anything less from Star Trek.

^ What would you consider a SJW show? Give examples please.
I'm not whom you asked, but I'd say the Star Trek Continues episode "Lolani" would be an example of how Discovery should *not* handle a moral or ethical message - there's an extended portion of the namesake's dialog where they really should have just given her a little pulpit and let her beat people with it. ;)

Edit: And honestly, STC has been good for over-the-top moralism a few of times. Like the episode with the Tellarite sexism.
