What have you always wanted to see in a space battle?

I am a CG artist and I am considering doing a small starship battle animation. I was curious what you've guys always wanted in a space battle. Something maybe that's never been shown before.

One cool idea I had was a severely damaged ship making a desperate last effort and engaging a collusion course at warp speed to inflict damage on an almost unbeatable enemey, say a Borg Cube or something.

What do you guys think?

Ships oriented on different planes instead of having the main ships on the same 2D plane and other ships swooping "up" or "down" on attack.

I like this. No sense of 'up' or 'down'. That could be watched from any angle and still be right.

Yes, 3D, like empire strikes back, but also have ships engaging at much greater distances. They're always shown right on top of each other.

Honestly, an attack from above or below -- not just slightly, either, but from a distance. Think frigates firing broadsides, but from the skies or the depths..

I think people have tried to do it before and due to how our brains work, it is difficult to keep a space battle to be completely chaotically 3D. Our plane bases brains want a horizon of some kind to keep thinks making sense.

I agree. Take the Mutara battle. The whole Khan doesn't know about 3D space thing has always bugged me. But I get why they kept it they way they did and used it as a dramatic beat instead. Had Meyer really tried to do some up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right shenanigans with the camera, it would have just killed the tension.

Some kind of cosmic ticking clock like a supernova or something that adds extra dimension to the terrors of space. Bonus points if it has a sciencey edge to it.

An actual torpedo spread against a wall of ships. The Galaxy class can fire 10 torpedoes per volley if needed, and we've seen that on screen. Whereas in the fleet battles of DS9, the first allied ships to engage tended to have a torpedo fire rate of like 1 per 3 seconds.

Might be worth considering how real naval battles work (ala Lucas with areal dogfights for Star Wars). Just because a ship can do something doesn't mean that's what is tactically feasible.

How are they supposed to have space battles when there is no military to fight it. That's what keeps getting the Federation its ass handed to it until they can get the Romulans or Klingons to pick up the slack for them.

I'm trying to not go there any more. Quit sucking me back into that argument! :guffaw:
