Worst TNG Episode Ever?

"Imaginary Friend". I could sit through "New Ground" and "Hero Worship", but "Imaginary Friend" was one bad kid story too many in Season 5.

"The Perfect Mate." I hated every minute of that episode. I felt embarrassed for Patrick Stewart, such a legendary actor, being forced to read those lines and play those scenes. UGH. I groaned through the whole thing.

Sure, there's a racist episode ("Code of Honor") and the notorious clip show ("Shades of Grey"). But for whatever reason, Perfect Mate was the hardest hour of my TNG binge.

I felt the Picard in that episode just wasn't the same man we had come to know. I didn't like the attempts to "soften" his character.

I skip all of the episodes with Lwaxana Troi and Q. No offense to the actors, they're both great - it's just that I don't care for the episode storylines.

“The higher, the fewer..."

Not a fan of that one.

Lots of bad ones. There's a good dozen I can't even sit through, Sub Rosa, Imaginary Friend, & Menage a Troi being among them, and as bad as they might be, it is what it is. At least they were trying to do something & failed, but never has there ever been a more lackluster & worthless example of Star Trek phoning in an episode as Shades of Gray. High School kids writing their own school play could do better. To this day, I still want my hour back

The clips were great though: "Data, somethings got me...argh!!!!"

Perfect Mate was actually rather one of my favorites from the "non-action" category. Picard looks really annoyed with her advances. I thought it was a good portrait though of him being "lonely at the top". You almost got to watch the female actress in this as Lt. Dax as DS9 but apparently she turned down the offer (bad career move).

One thing that bugged me about the Perfect Mate is why did Picard choose Data to show the female alien around the ship? Why not Deanna? Or any other woman? I guess it was supposed to be for the comic relief of it all but the whole thing just didn't make sense to me.

Comic relief point I totally got. Though it would have greatly sealed up some plot holes if her intoxication effect worked for both males and females.

I believe Will M got it right. In addition, Data had the strength to fight off anyone unable to restrain their passions.

Do you mean she turned down the role because it would have been a bad career move, or that turning it down was a bad career move?

Isn't this Famke Janssen we're talking about?

Yes it is. My comment probably didn't translate well on the net, shes obviously done well in acting since then but she wanted to do movies as opposed to TV.

I was just being "snarky" about her skipping Trek , to me, if I were an actor who ever had money concerns (and the non-famous ones do ) I'd take Star Trek in a heartbeat simply because of the following the franchise has that's so absolutely addicted to it. You could do paid conventions/talks more or less for the rest of your life if your a regular. I don't think too many other series give you that chance and certainly not to the same degree. Nicole de boer who played Ezri (a whopping one season) was talking in an interview I saw where she said people still come up to her about the role all the time, she still gets lots of convention invites, lots of connections in TV from it.

The Next Phase was a terrible episode. I can usually suspend disbelief when there's some slightly dodgy science in TNG, but I cannot sit through this one without screaming HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO BREATHE at the screen... ahem.

Also Cost of Living. Plot is basically: annoying old woman spends time with small boy in a mud bath against his sole parent's wishes. WTF?

Are you saying the air molecules would be inaccessible? The Romulan guy seems to have died. This is my favorite "Ro" episode.

Exactly. Aside from the question about why they didn't fall through the floor, why didn't they (a) suffocate, because surely the oxygen molecules would pass right through their lungs, and (b) freeze to death, because photons pass through them too, if they can't be seen - so also presumably would infrared heat photons, the ship would be able to detect them if infrared interacted with them.

It is a good Ro character episode in some ways actually, I agree. I just can't stop my science brain screaming all the way through the episode.

I know why they didn't fall through the floor. Perhaps air/heat/light exist in whatever phase/dimension dimension they were in. They were basically cloaked right?

We should probably take further discussion of The Next Phase's science to Trek Tech... suffice to say I'm not satisfied with any of the handwaving explanations I've heard :brickwall:

Yeah that episode is fun but irritating, Ro was one of my favourite characters in the latter part of TNG.

Wasn't that the one with the woman stuck in the floor and the bottom half of her well I guess was buried in the floor depending on how think the space between decks is.

"Shades of Grey" from Season 2.

There are other bad episodes, some essentially unwatchable to me (I'm looking at you, "The Last Outpost"), but the above takes the cake. I simply can't stand clip-shows. If you're not going to make a proper episode, then don't bother making one at all.
