No Man's Sky

I'm really of a mixed bag about this whole thing. On the one hand, I'm mad I spent 60 dollars on this game, on the other, I've only myself to blame for not waiting. But you would never see me leaving death threats or wishing death on anyone who worked on the game. Just based on YouTube Vids and some of the things I've seen on Twitter, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the team at Hello Games are legitimately afraid of being killed. Most of the time, people have short attention spans when it comes to bad games. But this was SO BAD, I can't help but wonder if people will still be talking about this 30 years from now. Will we be digging up unsold copies of No Mans Sky in a landfill in 2040? who knows....

Yeah, the way some people are acting is just beyond the pale. Like this is the first time a game was overhyped prior to release?

It's especially bizarre because Hello Games is a tiny studio, not some AAA powerhouse. How often do employees of the latter get death threats because they released a bad game?

As you said, people who bought the game at release have only themselves to blame. This is why I didn't drop $60 on it and still haven't bought it. By the time it's cheap enough for me to want to buy it, somebody else may well have executed this concept better.

I hope the developers learned some lessons from all this, but realistically this may be the death of Hello Games. I can't imagine people will be terribly kind to them if they announce a new game in the future. Too much ill will at this point.

No the landfill thing will be an easter egg in Just Cause 29 sometime in 2035

Apparently there's been even more drama about this, with Sean Murray having tweeted "No Man's Sky was a mistake."

No, it wasn't a mistake. Maybe hyping it up to be the "end all, be all" was. As a 20.00 indie game, it's fine. As a 60.00 game, no. I enjoy it for what it is, but looking back, I wish I had waited instead of paying full price on first day. Ironically, this was the first time I've purchased a game on first day since the 90's. Typically I wait for reviews and the price to come down, but I had a gift card and said "what the heck, game looks cool".

Yeah, that's probably the main issue, really.

It's an indie game built on a pretty modest budget, but it was marketed and sold as a AAA-game.

People have different expectations for those.

I have been burned in the past by overhyped games that didn't turn out to be all that, Destiny being the most well known example.

I'm not buying first day anymore usually with very few exceptions, the upcoming Mass Effect being one of them. It's bet to even wait a week and see what the players say because i also don't trust review sites anymore.

Having a problem finding a fighter or explorer with enough slots. I moved to a new system. Gave up and got a fighter vaguely looking SWish. With a lot of funds accumulation I might end with a 44 dlot behemoth trader. Cannot find an explorer with large number of slots.
