Star Trek's Impact On Your Life

It's directly as a result of Star Trek that I've embraced a more compassionate, open minded perspective than everyone else in my family. I appreciate diversity thanks to Star Trek, and the willingness to see others' perspectives. Star Trek also helped me understand about prejudice, and how that can be overcome.

Star Trek gave me a better perspective on my lifes aims, a better relationship with my father and a better relationship with my wife. It's also given me opportunities, both personal and professional and allowed me to meet some absolutely wonderful people and do absolutely wonderful things.

I'd hate to think what I'd become born ten years later with Breaking Bad as inspiration :p

One thing that sets Trek apart from much of our entertainment is its positive view on the future of humanity, even if it's called naive by many people (myself included in my darker moments).
Regarding the rest of your post, I personally do accept that religion has had a positive impact on many people's lives. I'm just constiutionally unable to let go and have faith, nor do I see the need for that.

I have always gravitated towards the philosophy of improving yourself. I definitely picked that up from Star Trek. With every experience I at least try to gain something important from it. Of course, treating others its respect and respecting (though not necessarily agreeing with their view).

Yes, I agree that in some ways we are getting better, but DS9 shook that up with more, in my opinion, reality. Yes, we are less bigoted and discriminatory than before any Star Trek show came on, but if you're paying attention to what's happening right now, things have gotten REMARKABLY worse.

Personally, I think a lot of my work ethic & professionalism have come from being influenced by Star Trek & Starfleet specifically, & it's something I've reflected on often. It's no small thing that they can depict teams of people overcoming obstacles, adhering to command structures, trying to excel in their roles, & improve their workplace & performance, and generally benefiting from the skills & talents of their peers.

When they talk about Star Trek being an utopia, (which I don't think it is) I certainly don't think of their teamwork & camaraderie as a reflection of that. We can all be that way in our world, whenever we choose. Whenever I see a coworker who is apathetic, lazy, unmotivated, or generally has a bad attitude, the default thought in the back of my head has always been "This person needed more Star Trek in their life"

Thank you for your sincere post.

I would say when I was younger I was more "conservative". Though I was probably leaning towards middle of the road. I would credit ST with making me think about that position a lot more.

I disagree with your view on religion, TOS and STNG are steadfastly humanist and so was Gene Roddenberry. I'm not going to try and change your opinion but I hope you change your mind about becoming an Evangelical anything.

RAMA

How has the Star Trek universe impacted your life? It seems, even above most or all other Sci-Fi, Star Trek impacts people's lives in a positive manner that is more than entertainment. For example, there are inventors, space explorers, and other things that have impacted people's direction, if not career in life.

For me, I started watching Star Trek during the changing times of the late 2000's. The economy was bad, our politicians were bad, and the religious (that includes people who don't believe in the supernatural, because it is a belief about metaphysics) landscape was changing. Star Trek made me stop and think about it's impact on my life, rather than just taking it without thinking. I also realized that we should tolerate people who don't believe in what we believe in, and not interfere with other cultures that are not our own. I became an unofficial philosopher (though I have taken Philosophy of Religion and Philosophy 101) with the help of Star Trek. I was a growing and developing boy in middle school that had Trek sort of the things out.

If you don't mind me saying, and I am not intentionally starting a flame war, realized that we needed to change the direction of our country politically and religiously in part do to Trek . I don't agree with the Secular Humanism/Progressive/Socialist vision of (some) of Star Trek. I plan on being a Evangelical Pastor and maybe a politician someday. Hopefully you guys don't mind this last paragraph.

Star trek has given me a new perspective on life. A hope that things will get better, that some day it will be the end of scarcity and pauperism, not to mention war.

I think you might have this guy mistaken for somebody else...like locutus101...or triskelion16...or Worf359...or maybe Needful....
@1001001 said that you have tools to determine this. Why don't the two of you use these tools, instead of harrassing me for no reason?

I know I am innocent.

I got interested in Star Trek and a really difficult point in my life. It gave me hope that the hardships I was dealing with wouldn't last forever because Humans will one day grow to the point where that type of behavior is strange and out of place rather than ordinary. For example; there are lots of episodes about corrupt Starfleet officials; but all of them get exposed and the situation corrected, unlike real life where everyone might know an official is corrupt but no one can do anything about it.

And I found the concepts of exploration and IDIC compelling. It's a challenge to tolerate ways that are different from what one is used to, even if they're obviously "wrong." I learned patience and the notion that I, at 14 years old, didn't know everything in the Universe. I learned that no matter how smart someone is there's always room to grow. And of course I came away with a love for science and anything related to space and astronomy; how could I not, when reading articles about NASA projects is probably the closest I'll ever come to exploring strange new worlds.

Apparently, you're not old enough to be acquainted with the notion of rhetorical questions.
I'm going to let that go because you're "new here" (picture me making great, bug air quotes)...and I'm awaiting other plot developments. I'd strongly suggest not taking things further, though.
