It was his idea, his pitch. Gene Roddenberry himself said "BAD IDEA BRO!"
Except both Bennett and Loughery were / have been always open about how drastically they changed Shatner's original story pitch. Shatner crafted broad strokes, but Loughery actually wrote it.
I did. I liked itOn the other hand, I may have to check out his new travel show . ...![]()
IIRC, Harve Bennett also told Shatner that the search for 'God' will be futile and the audiences will be disappointed.
Which I don't nessacarily agree with. I think it would/could have worked better if Sybok wasn't looking for "God" specifically, but something conceptually similar, or they made it damn clear that Sybok was basically delusional, only at the very very end do we have a hint of "maybe he was right...?" And then you drop the other hammer really hard.
Shatner's original take was LITERALLY GOD and then it was LITERALLY THE DEVIL. Star Trek doing stuff exploring the ideas of religion makes sense. Doing a literal Judeo-Christian-God-Devil story makes no sense.
Which... WTF? No. That might work in an original Sci-Fi story, but it doesn't fit the Trek universe at all.
I'm sorry I saw it, does that count?Has anyone ever apologized for Nemesis?
