William Shatner Apologizes For Star Trek V

Yes. Helping shape the story...that's generally known as writing. :)

Except both Bennett and Loughery were / have been always open about how drastically they changed Shatner's original story pitch. Shatner crafted broad strokes, but Loughery actually wrote it.

Wasn't it Shatner's idea to have the whole thing centered around Kirk?

IIRC, Harve Bennett also told Shatner that the search for 'God' will be futile and the audiences will be disappointed.

Which I don't nessacarily agree with. I think it would/could have worked better if Sybok wasn't looking for "God" specifically, but something conceptually similar, or they made it damn clear that Sybok was basically delusional, only at the very very end do we have a hint of "maybe he was right...?" And then you drop the other hammer really hard.

Shatner's original take was LITERALLY GOD and then it was LITERALLY THE DEVIL. Star Trek doing stuff exploring the ideas of religion makes sense. Doing a literal Judeo-Christian-God-Devil story makes no sense.

Which... WTF? No. That might work in an original Sci-Fi story, but it doesn't fit the Trek universe at all.

It might've been better, conceivably. had Sybok been adopted by Sarek, instead of his son. Sybok could now delude himself into believing himself The Son of He Who Has No Name. That's why he can heal Secret Pain, in his mind, and - more importantly - why "God" has chosen him, specifically, for a Face to Face interview. At the same time, I cannot see anyone involved in the project wanting to take it that far, due to the potential for giving offense. But, at the same time, it does make Sybok seem more nuts, by comparison, doing it the other way, doesn't it? He's nobody, in particular, except that he just-so-happens to be favoured, for no other reason than to stroke Sybok's ego.

It's never really clear what kind of belief the Vulcans have, or if they have any belief at all. For all we know they could all be agnostic, nay atheist.

I was actually fascinated by TFF. It had good scenes and average scenes. Like other fans have posted, the low/no budget unspecial effects at the end were really horrific and left a bad taste in my mouth. "God" looked more like a homeless dude than a supreme creator.

Even when The Final Frontier came out, Hollywood had been making movies for the better part of a Century, you'd think they'd have figured it out how to entertain without NEED of apologies like these from The Shat, JJ Abrams and whatever other heart-warming apologies are in the works for us STAR TREK fans. Are Trekkies the only audience that gets apologised to, in this fashion? Telling us anything, just to keep our asses in seats at theatre ...

I had no idea. And were those good apologies or Shatner style apologies?

It's basically the entire DVD commentary track.

It's also single handily the reason why I now see the whole 'apologising for a movie' thing as ridiculous. Such self flagellation and obvious surrender to nerd rage bloodlust, should be reserved for serial-killers, rapists, and serial killing rapists.

Also, maybe those people that chuck puppies and kittens into garbage bins.
