Spoilers Star Trek: Prey Trilogy - general discussion thread

And Okrand himself apparently didn't recognize the intended etymology, because he Okrandized it as betleH in his revised Klingon Dictionary.

Definitely a possibility. However, it's worth mentioning that the pronunciation of bat'leth (ˈbætˌləθ) is so far from batlh 'etlh ('bɑt͡ɬ.ʔɛt͡ɬ) that writing it thusly would barely make sense. [My IPA transcriptions aren't necessarily perfect, but they should be close.]
However, Marc does retcon this in Klingon for the Galactic Traveler, where he states that betleH is an archaic form of batlh 'etlh (presumably dating back to the days of Kahless), but that the latter is rarely used except to explain the word's etymology. Similar to the way the word starboard should really means something like "steerside", but nobody ever says that.

Also, as people say, words like Fek'lhr can easily be explained by considering the fact that Kronos must have many languages, and that those have evolved over time. Heck, this is necessary to explain most of the Klingon dialogue in the various Star Trek series, which bear little resemblance to Okrand's tlhIngan Hol.
In romanized tlhIngan Hol, Fek'lhr's name is spelled veqlargh, and pronounced roughly as Worf pronounced it in Devil's Due. It could be that the spelling Fek'lhr makes sense when you consider the pronunciation in some other language (or an older form of the same language), just as the silent k in the English word knife makes perfect sense when you consider the word's etymology.

With Legacies getting audiobook releases, is there any word of Prey or other books getting audiobook releases?

I haven't heard anything definitive yet. I would like to see it happen, certainly -- seems like Prey would be a good candidate for it. I did just learn that there's an audiobook coming for Fractures, the Halo anthology I'm in at Simon & Schuster this fall (along with James Swallow and Christie Golden), so I'm hopeful.

We've got the cover to the last Prey book. I'm usually pretty forgiving, but this one is not very goodt IMO. The photoshopping is really rough and obvious, and the way they have the other Klingon on the cover mostly blocking Worf is a really weird choice, IMO. I think this is one of the first Trek books covers in quite a while, that I just plain don't like.

oh my god kill it with fire! please. fast..
This cover could have been pretty good if the Klingons didn't look so.. cgi

Honestly I can't believe anyone could seriously take a look at that cover and say, "Yep, that's great! Print it!"

You know, I kind of like it. Anyway, regarding the other Klingon on the cover, I noticed his ridges are similar to Worf's, Kurn's and Alexander's. Another family member from the House of Mogh? Dare I guess Mogh himself?

I know the rights issues are likely the big holdup, but I wish there had been some kind of art book for Trek book covers. Lou Feck, Boris, Chris Achilleos, Keith Birdsong, etc. all in one book? Shut up and take my money.

All well. :)

Can't wait for these books to be honest! I am though, somewhat surprised that CrossCult hasn't even announced a translation of these. But since this is "stand alone" trillogy I'll get them in English since it won't mess up my collection.

That would be awesome. There really has been some great Trek cover art over the years. I'd also throw in some of the more modern stuff from people like Cliff Nielsen, his Avatar and Destiny covers are especially great.

Weeeell let's look at how CC has published Trek novels since 2014
out of 14 Trek novels
  • 2 New Frontier novels
  • 3 Voyager novels
  • 2 The Original Series novels
  • 3 Enterprise novels
  • 4 post-Nemesis novels (3 Typhon Pact|1 Titan)
out of 16 Trek novels in 2015:
  • 1 Enterprise novel
  • 2 Voyager novels
  • 2 New Frontier
  • 1 Corps of Engineers compilation
  • 2 Eugenic Wars novels
  • 7 post-Nemesis novels (3 The Next Generation|4 The Fall)
out of 15 Trek novels in 2016:
  • 1 The Original Series novel
  • 2 New Frontier novels
  • 2 Voyager novels
  • 2 Corps of Engineers compilations
  • 2 Starfleet Academy novels
  • 6 post-Nemesis novels (1 The Fall|1 The Next Generation|3 Prometheus|1 Section 31)
out of 14 known Trek novels in 2017:
  • 1 The Original Series novel
  • 2 New Frontier novels
  • 2 Voyager novels
  • 2 Corps of Engineers compilations
  • 2 Enterprise novels
  • 2 Seekers novels (only announced for 2017, no release month yet)
  • 3 post-Nemesis novels (1 Deep Space Nine|2 The Next Generation)
the pattern:
  • 1 The Original Series novel (typically published early in the year, except in 2014 and 2015 where two TOS novels were published in 2014 (one in February, one in December) and none in 2015)
  • 2 New Frontier novels (typically published at seperate points, one very early and one very late in the year, except in 2015 where both novels were published within the first five months and 2017 where, so far only one novel was announced so far, for August)
  • 2 Voyager novels (typically published at seperate points, one very early and one very late in the year, except in 2014 where three novels were published in 2014. Two, the Spirit Walk duology within the first six months and Full Circle within the last three.)
  • 2 Corps of Engineers compilations (typically published at seperate points, one very early and one very late in the year, except in 2015 where the first was published in November)
  • 2 Enterprise novels (except in 2014 where Beneath the Raptor's Wings was published in two seperate volumes, in 2015, where only one novel was published and the series was canceled, though RotF will be published in 2017)
  • 2 "special books" (Starfleet Academy and Eugenic Wars duology) (in 2015 and 2016)
If we ignore the "special books" that means that out of about 15 novels per year nine are already set as TOS, NF, VGR, COE and ENT/RotF, which leaves space for six post-Nemesis novels per year (4 in 2017 if you factor in the Seekers novels). Sacraments of Fire, Ascendance, Sight Unseen and Force and Motion are the not yet scheduled pre-Prey novels. As three post-Nemesis novels are already scheduled that leaves place for one more, I'd presume Sight Unseen, but that's just a guess. so there's the possibility that SoF, Ascendance and Force and Motion will be published alongside the Prey trilogy in 2018, which is way far in the future to be announced just yet.

EDIT: No that I think about it as Cross Cult is catching up quite fast these days it kinda makes sense to tune down the number of post-Nemesis novels in order to always have a small bunch of them to release, instead of running out at one point and having huge gaps between two of them.
EDIT: And with "post-Nemesis" I mean only those that are currently in late 2385/early 2386.
