Another piece of music I loved was the piece where they enter Yorktown, beautiful.

Though I've never been a Beastie Boys fan I love the inclusion in these movies. Nice to know something from our era survived like Riker loving jazz & this Kirk loving rock. Remembering how old Sabotage does make me shake my head to where the years have gone.

The Yorktown took my breath away. What an amazing piece of design work. I hope ST:B wins some major awards for design/sfx/and cinematography.

Just got home from a second viewing. Still an awesome movie.

Some thoughts:

What does Krall do if the Teenak had accepted the Abornath? Seems like Yorktown was some kind of command base for the Enterprise and was likely advised when Kirk was given it as a token to give to the Teenak.
Shouldn't the Enterprise have been cleared of collected artifacts to make room for when they went back out exploring?

Seems Star Trek Beyond has kept up Trek's long history of little to no security of sensitive areas.

At the end, I think I would've liked to have seen Kirk accept promotion, Spock head off to New Vulcan and the rest of the gang split up. Then have the beginning of '4' be about rounding them up.

I guess if the Tennak had accepted the piece, Krall would've known and gone after them. Then it's likely the Enterprise would've been called in to defend them from the attack. We then get a different story, or at least different incidents leading the same result: having to stop Krall from killing everyone in Yorktown. The thing is, we needed the Enterprise lured to Krall's home for the story to work as they wanted to tell it. So for the sake of the story, the Teenak turn down the gift and it goes back aboard the Enterprise, safe and sound (whoops!).

This movie will eat up a lot of time once I get it on Blu-ray. Just so much to see.

Agree with what they say pretty much from end to end. (Interestingly, I think that's the first time I've heard them speak that frankly about the prior two movies.)

That half in the bag episode is odd, because I got the impression the red letter media guy liked the first ST movie when he did a video review of it a few years ago. It also gives me this feeling of a bandwagoning phenomenon regarding Into Darkness...Beyond is getting a bandwagoning in the opposite direction that is motivated by an overstated dislike of Into Darkness. It's just an impression though.

Nitpick: I thought it was weird that Kirk was already being offered a promotion when he wasn't even finished with his five year mission, especially right after having a very rough diplomatic mission with those CGI beasts. Anyway, I dunno if I would want a "getting the band back together". My sense is that the fourth film will not only be the last with that cast but actually be about the end of Kirk's five year mission. I can imagine something like Chekov's absence will serve as a reminder for Kirk that all things end. After that, the actors are no longer in contract to return.

When the first film came out Mike regarded it as a "guilty pleasure", knowing it's not a good film but enjoying it for the schlock. They were pretty harsh on STID from the get go though, so it wasn't a bandwagon thing. I think because of STID, it probably soured Mike's feelings over the first film.

Anyway, my feelings pretty much reflect on theirs and it's not at all a bandwagon thing. BEYOND really did deliver me a good time at the movies. I never felt at all frustrated in the way I did with the first two. There's no convoluted plotting and diversions, the characters are more likable and believable, its message of unity is pretty inspiring in its simplistic way, and ultimately I came out with a smile on my face. It simply worked for me and I hope to see the next film carry that forward.

That is something that was not clear. There was talk of Krall "taking the crew", which I guess was partly to reduce the bodycount, but then you only see maybe a couple of dozen of them on the planet. And there weren't many people at Kirk's party either, but then I guess inviting the whole crew would require a much bigger venue.

It's funny. Often when we see captains in all the shows addressing the crew in person, they always seem to be confined to a group of 20 people, at least enough to afford as many extras as they can. I think the largest group we ever saw assembled was in TMP in that large rec room as everyone watched Vger on a big screen.

Maybe Kirk took the Enterprise out with minimal staff and crew (enough to maintain the ship, and mount a rescue), as they had only so recently arrived at Yorktown. I got the impression they were stopping at Yorktown for extended leave, resupplying, and some maintenance for the ship; and that they were going to stay for a couple of weeks. Then they were pressed into going back out for a quick mission, and then return to finish the routine stuff. With smaller staff and crew, they could more easily accommodate the full crew of the ship they were heading out to rescue.

I'm sure there were plenty of Enterprise crew who were killed, but I don't like to think it was a high body count. They were able to fit all the remaining Enterprise crew onto the Franklin, which is a very small ship, from what I gather (and I got they impression they were all tightly packed in there). Don't know how to read all that, so I'm going with an optimistic outlook (it is supposed to be an optimistic film, after all).

Going on the rescue mission with a skeleton staff is a possibility, but there are no positive indicators that this was the case.
Were all the rescued crew members on the Franklin when it went back to Yorktown? I think this will be a matter of contention in coming years. For me, the only indication is the random dead redshirt they find. Otherwise I'd say it makes more sense that the Enterprise crew were left on the planet.

Yes, TMP was the biggest. Nearest thing we've seen to that is the Academy scenes in the Nu fillms.

What I heard while watching the film was that it was harmeless radiation, implying that it would not cause cancer. And Uhura's a big girl, she can space-google the material make up of that trinket. It may be the case that I didn't hear correctly, alternatively it may be that a random poster on youtube didn't listen very well. What makes the most sense??

Besides, I'm not 100% sure the YouTube commenter in question has the qualifications needed to analyse the cancerous effects of fictional materials.
